Inspired by twitter user @/wangxian_trash ( @syntheticpoetry on here, I believe), who headcanoned that LWJ still talks to his mother. Tells her about his day, thoughts, struggles. Tells him about Wei Wuxian. Talks to her for comfort - or just to cry - during the sixteen years he’s alone. Tells her about Sizhui.
I also think that he’d start out his conversations addressing her with “A-Niang” but then would slip into the more informal and intimate “Mama” down the line.

Never thought I’d draw anything related to this fandom, but I’m once again proved wrong by myself.

A-Yuan and the illustrious Hanguang-Jun I realized as i was uploading this that in my 2 am brain I used the wrong ‘where’. It seems like a lot of work to fix and then reupload so, this is what we get

About a month ago, @fleetofshippyships approached me with the idea for a cover for a series Tears of Pearl (aka the Merman Lan Wangji series), and we came up with a concept.
I slapped her with a sketch yesterday, and suddenly we thought “…but wait. What if we used different backgrounds and settings to refer to different moments in the story?”
…there are six different versions of the above drawing, Six fully coloured and shaded versions, including this one. I cannot wait to show you all of them, oh my God - I may reveal them one by one as the story progresses, depending on what Zoe says, since some of them are spoilery. Her main cover looks different than mine, and she’s going to use different versions for different teasers.
Aaaah, this was super fun!!!
When Wei Ying’s arm slumped down again, Lan Wangji untied the waistband of his robe, setting it beside the ribbons and headpiece Wei Ying had removed from his hair. His gaze lingered over them for several moments.
The time from Wei Ying finding him until he fell asleep was distorted by ripples in his mind. Had he not been so exhausted, so in pain, would he have allowed Wei Ying to take such liberties? The forehead ribbon especially, now that he knew the significance of it after so many years of ignorance?
He closed his eyes in a grimace. Yes. He would have allowed it. In fact, he ached to experience it again. He had dreamt of seeing Wei Ying again countless times over the months he was in Gusu, but he had not imagined such a simple gesture from him, had not considered the great comfort and intimacy it could bring, or just how desperately he craved such a thing.
But rather than linger on thoughts of Wei Ying’s fingers in his hair, or the fact Wei Ying had touched his forehead ribbon, he opened his robe and moved closer to Wei Ying. With great care not to jostle him, he lay down on his side next to him, flush against his body. He laid one open half of his robe over Wei Ying’s body to give him what warmth he could and then, with some hesitation, lay his upper body partially over Wei Ying’s side.
In his sleep, Wei Ying made another soft sound, shifted a little, but did not wake from the sudden weight on him.
Lan Wangji could barely breathe to be so close to him, to the warmth radiating from his core. Wei Ying’s body was a hot line against his own, and he pressed closer to it to bask in his warmth.
With such liberties already taken, it was easy to rest his head on Wei Ying’s chest. He held his breath as he closed his eyes and listened. The steady beating of Wei Ying’s heart made his own flutter and quicken. He had never been so close to another. Not since he was a child in his mother’s embrace.
“Forgive me,” he whispered, before exhaling and slowly relaxing against Wei Ying.
…do I need to explain myself at this point? @fleetofshippyships whips out a new chapter of Tears of Pearl, her Merman Lan Wangji AU that now has a fancy title, and as the feels hit me I can’t do much else but sit down and draw.
Look at them, Lan Wangji being all cuddly while in pain, and Wei Wuxian, sleeping right through it, like the absolute dormouse that he is. He’s gonna be so pissed should he ever find out.
Chapter 4 is already up, so I’m behind for once, lol. If you’re into merfolk, this is the fic for you. Go and read it!

A sleepy Wei Ying for you to enjoy. ♥
Part of a much larger piece; I just couldn’t resist showing off his cute sleepy face.

Sleepy kisses under the full moon are the best kind of kisses. 🐇 ❤️🌙
I just want them to be happy together, and to be finally able to rest. is that too much to ask for?

Happy birthday to the prettiest jiaoren around Lotus Pier!
Since it’s officially Mermay, and since it’s Jiang Yanli’s birthday on May 2nd, I decided to combine the two and give Shijie the Mermaid Treatment.
Her outfit was based on one of her donghua outfits; I thought it’d go nicely with the tail.

“It was too late, the surface was too far away, his lungs too empty. The urge to breathe in was too strong. The hands on his ankles let go, but he couldn’t find the strength to kick his legs to try and reach the surface. Instead there was only the rushing in his head and the burning feeling in his chest that crept up his throat until he finally opened his mouth.
But something covered it. Air, warm but unmistakable, was pushed in, and he instinctively clutched at what was in front of him, sucking the air in until his lungs filled. He didn’t register anything but the sensation of air rushing into him, until it was gone and a hand covered his mouth and nose.
At some point he had closed his eyes, but he opened them and would have breathed in water if not for the hand covering his mouth.
All around him floated pale blue cloth, and in the centre of it, Lan Zhan, his hair twisting around his face like a dark cloud. For a moment, Wei Wuxian could only stare at him, dumbfounded and struggling to think.
Lan Zhan pressed something into his hand. It was Suibian and its sheathe. Wei Wuxian’s fingers curled around them instinctively, but he never looked away from Lan Zhan’s face, nor did Lan Zhan waver from his focus on Wei Wuxian’s.
The ribbon around Lan Zhan’s forehead was crooked, and his robe and hair was in disarray around them, but somehow it was the most beautiful sight Wei Wuxian had ever seen. For a moment, he wondered if he had died and had been gifted with seeing Lan Zhan’s beauty after death.”
…will I ever stop drawing art for @fleetofshippyships ‘s Merman Lan Wangji AU? Probably not; this story just provides me with so much joy.
And I, like, really wanted to try my hand at this particular scene, in which Lan Wangji is sharing air with Wei Wuxian to stop him from drowning - you can clearly see that kissing (-like) poses don’t seem to be my forte, so they look as if they are enjoying themselves way too much here, lol.
Again, Zoe, I did this entirely behing your back and didn’t double-check with you for accuracy; I hope you still like it. ♥
Come, let me love you Let me give my life to you Let me drown in your laughter Let me die in your arms Let me lay down beside you Let me always be with you Come, let me love you Come, love me again
The only excuse I have for this is that I wanted to draw something with an unhealthy amount of details.
Also the pattern on Lan Wanji’s lace robe is as innacurate as it can get…I just couldn’t replicate it.

Thought it would be fun to show them like this for a change, as a kind of masterpost/collection post, of sorts.
I say “so far”, because there are at least two more - one that’s completely finished but unpublished yet because the piece of the story it goes with has yet to be published…and one that exists as a coloured sketch only at this point in time.
( @fleetofshippyships knows about and has seen both - so no surprises this time. We’ll see how long I can keep that up. 😂 )
I tried adding captions to each picture, so please click on them to fullview and get a bit more info about what’s happening on them.
Merman Lan Wangji Au and its wonderful content have of course been written by the equally wonderful @fleetofshippyships ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
