all the memes about Tumblr banning every word ever are funny as fuck but at the same time as I'm having a sensible chuckle I'm also slowly breaking out in hives over the fact that this is soon going to be the norm for the internet. within the next decade probably every fun thing about it is going to be choked by advertisers demanding family friendly spaces to hurl a billion adverts at us per page, and everything is going to be a money making venture first and foremost. it's going to be like wandering around a super sanitised shopping mall.

I don't know, maybe it's hitting me harder because I still remember when the internet was the wild fucking west, but seeing this space become just another playground for corporations to make another quick buck is fucking depressing.

I foresee an ongoing wave of fun-free-adult-authentic space creators, programmers and users alike, creating and populating sites that people flock to because there's a strong demand for places that let you be your free and authentic self and interact with other interesting free and authentic people, relentlessly pursued by investment engines that want to capitalize on that very popularity and will destroy the very things that make it popular and successful because of the value they can suck up while it's still warm.

It's been done. Myspace to Livejournal to Tumblr, we've been through this already. Now Tumblr's under attack and Reddit has an IPO waiting in the wings and we'll have to see what we can make of some new environment after.
