Genuine question as to why you feel so passionate about being pro-jedi? I definitely wouldn't say I'm anti-jedi, but I think there are some decent criticisms that can be made about them. But overall I'm just interested to understand the dedication to being pro-jedi, cause it is a fictional organisation at the end of the day. Isn't it more fulfilling to look at them from different perspectives so we can get the most out of the story as possible?

Avatar

Before I answer, I'm going to ask you a question in turn, would you ever ask this question to someone who was anti-Jedi? Would you ever imply that they need to change their view on the Jedi because they're "not getting the most out of the story?"

Now, I'm going to preface this answer by saying that I'm not angry with you, I'm just very passionate about this topic---so don't take any of this personally. You seem like you're genuinely asking, and I appreciate that.

----------

Personally, for me, there aren't really any criticisms that can be made about the Jedi- (keep in mind, I primarily adhere to Lucas Canon, everything else is just an add on depending whether I like it or not). Everything that people criticize the Jedi for or accuse them of falls into one of three categories:

  1. Not true- (the Jedi are a cult, the Jedi repress their emotions, the Jedi were mean to Anakin, etc.)
  2. Done for a reason because the other option would be worse/it was their only real option in a bad situation- (the Jedi shouldn't have fought in the war, the Jedi should've defended Ahsoka, the Jedi are slavers because of the clones, etc.)
  3. Or it's something that's an Eastern concept/practice but people refuse to look at it as such and instead project their Western viewpoint/religious trauma onto them- (literally the entire thing about attachment)

I've never seen any criticism of the Jedi that doesn't fall into one of these categories, so why should I be inclined to "hear people out" or "look at the Jedi from other perspectives" when there's...really nothing else to look at?

----------

Another thing to consider is that, while the Jedi are fictional characters, George Lucas based them heavily on very real religions and groups---particularly Jews and Buddhists.

So when people say things like- "the Jedi weren't allowed to care/love/have emotions because of Attachment™️" -they're spreading harmful misinformation and basically saying that Buddhists can't love/care/have emotions because of their rule against attachment, since the philosophy of non-attachment is literally taken verbatim from Buddhism.

And when people usually pair the above rhetoric with- "-and that's why the Jedi deserved what they got/caused their own downfall" -it's...a very concerning mindset for people to perpetuate---especially when George Lucas based the genocide of the Jedi and the rise of the Empire off of the Holocaust and Nazi Germany.

When you strip away the fictional aspects of it, a lot of what people say about the Jedi is literally Nazi/antisemitic/Holocaust denial rhetoric. To take an example of something that has actually been said on one of my posts:

"The destruction of the Jedi Order was less a genocide and more of a religious conflict that the Jedi lost. The Jedi Order is a sect of the collective religious culture of 'Force Users,' and their destruction cannot really be considered genocide as the cultural group of 'Force Users' still exists albeit heavily restricted and controlled by the Sith during the Empire Era." - @/ironwoodarl01

And, as @zarohk pointed out:

It’s depressing how so many “Jedi critical” talking points are pretty much antisemitism and Holocaust denial/justification: The destruction of the Jedi Order was less a genocide and more of a religious conflict that the Jedi lost. "The Jedi Order religion of Judaism is a sect of the collective religious culture of 'Force Users Abrahamic faiths, and their destruction cannot really be considered genocide as the cultural group of Force Users Abrahamic faiths still exists…" Similar thinly-veiled antisemitism in the Star Wars fandom also frequently includes supersessionism, the Christian idea that during the (Roman) Republic era, the Jedi Jews had become corrupt and lost their way, and and so finally a divinely created person was sent to show them new path. This is why attempts to read Star Wars where Anakin is a Christ figure or correct where the Jedi have failed (ignoring the fact that he wrecked the lives of most people he was involved with, including himself, and the Darth Vader was never happy) are not just incorrect, but generally have a thick underlayer of antisemitism.

So, while Star Wars is fictional, it's important for people to analyze why they feel the way they do about the Jedi and be critical of the ways in which they talk about/criticize the Jedi---because, like it or not, the Jedi and their genocide are based on real people/things and so your reaction to them/what happened to them can be very telling.

----------

Finally, being critical of the good guys or trying to view everything through a morally grey lens doesn't make the story inherently more interesting, nor does it inherently add anything to the story---so I'm not "missing" anything.

If believing that no one can actually just be good, and everyone has to have some agenda, and "the good guys were the REAL bad guys all along" adds something to Star Wars for you...by all means, go ahead and believe what you want.

But my view of Star Wars isn't "lesser" or "missing something" just because I don't share that view and actually like the good guys and believe in what they taught/did.

----------

I'm passionate about being pro-Jedi because of everything I outlined above and because they were truly good people who tried their best to help the galaxy---they were brought down, not because of anything they did, but because of one man's selfish stupid actions.

There might've been a time when I was willing to hear people out when they criticized the Jedi---because hey! maybe I was wrong---but that time has long passed because nothing anyone has ever criticized the Jedi for has held up to scrutiny, and anti-Jedi people won't just keep the fuck off my page and leave me alone.

So, frankly, this is my blog and I'm allowed to be as passionate as I want to be---and I'm not gonna stop, or start viewing the Jedi as "wrong" or "bad" or whatever, just because you- (and other people, I'm sure) -think I'm missing something by being strictly pro-Jedi

Now, imagine this. Imagine Leia, right, just, like, vibing at Alderaan, and some sw fan citizen comes up to her, and asks her this: "Don't you miss your family?"

And when Leia responds that she's been raised by Bail, she's been raised by Breha, and that they're her family-

"But what about your real family?"

And they continue to hound her about it, ask her if she resents Bail and Breha for "taking" her away.

Then they ask her how she feels, having been "indoctrinated" into the rebellion.

And when Leia is confused, the citizen responds, "well, they raised you to be like this, didn't they? A rebel? Don't you resent them?"

Not pretty? Not a pretty picture? You think Leia would agree? How she'd feel? Probably pretty crappy, and upset.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's how any Jedi would feel if you tried to invalidate their family in front of them. If you told them it would be better if they were raised by their "real families." Because they were raised by them. The Jedi.

Biological ties are not what make a family. Nuclear families are not the only type of family. Adoption is not "taking the child away from their real parents."

Especially when the vast majority of the Jedi we have seen do view the Order as their family. You see it in their actions, their words. And they actually say it. Multiple times.

And then you accuse them of being indoctrinated, simply for believing and adhering to the traditions they've been raised by. They're "indoctrinated" because they've been raised with values they believe in, values that help them deal with the universe around them, traditions that teach them how to be kind, how to value all life. How to connect with the energy that connects all living things in a healthy way. How to care for one another. How to cherish someone without trying so desperately to hold on that they end up hurting them-and everyone around them. The freedom to choose what they want to do in life.

That isn't indoctrination.

This is indoctrination:

teach (a person or group) to accept a set of beliefs uncritically.

We've seen time and time again that Jedi are allowed to question things, they're not forced to accept one way of living or point of view. The Council itself questions the Order, their beliefs, their purpose in the galaxy, and the Force itself all the time.

We see their individuality, their different ways of doing things, their different personalities, how their birth cultures influence their fashion or, to some degree, the way they act-and it's not treated as a bad thing. They actually embrace it. Why do you think the Jedi are so diverse?

The Jedi weren't being "taken away." They were not "indoctrinating children" because they raised them in a rich, healthy culture. And it's frankly disgusting, intolerant, (and racist) that you invalidate any type of family that doesn't conform to your idea of what a family should be.

For jam: Jedi council shenanigans- cos sometimes Yoda has to get up to mischief

Things Yoda has done to Lighten Shit Up:

  • - Glitched Ki-Adi Mundi’s comm holo to occasionally say swears
  • - Taken all of Kit Fisto’s abandoned robes and hidden them
  • - Taken all of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s abandoned cloaks and bleached them
  • - (with Plo) Switched all of Mace’s decaf with regular (they were both immediately very sorry)
  • - Gave all visiting younglings candy
  • - Changed all the lights in the chamber to red
  • - Stole Anakin’s hair gel right before a meeting
  • - Put salt on all the meeting snacks
  • - Hid floaters in all the chairs

Ok now I’m curious. What happened with Mace?

Okay so like, canonly Mace is a very good stage actor. Which means he knows how to project his voice. Which he’s too chill to do normally, even when he’s mad, buuut it turns out that when he’s wired you can hear him all the way from the council chamber to the library, *especially* when he’s mad.

PFFF That would’ve been terrifying to experience. Now I’m just imagining the Council purposely giving Mace proper caff and letting him go full ham on the Senate. Now THATS something I’d pay to see

Things That Canon Has Not Told Me Is Not True So It’s My Canon Now

  • the first way younglings learn how to communicate is through the Force. not everybody comes to the Temple able to speak in a common language with others, and the Force is instinctive for most of them already.
  • the Jedi have their own marriage vows. the vows pledge the spouses to each other and to the Force, and to their duty. (it is modelled partly after the Sikh marriage ceremony which has the spouses vowing to each other and to God.)
  • the reason most Jedi do not get married outside of the Order is because most vows place the spouse as the most important person in one’s life (which is valid!) but it directly contradicts a Jedi Knight’s vow, which is to serve the Force and the betterment of the galaxy, Anakin.
  • Jedi who want to marry outside the Order usually have long conversations with their spouse, their Master and the Council to work out the best way to frame their marriage vows so that they do not contradict their Knight’s vows and also respect all cultures and traditions involved.
  • there are classes to learn about Jedi culture, refreshers over the years because one’s point of view as a child could change over the years and you could reinterpret something you took for granted as a kid.
  • these classes are also open to the general public, but not many people know this fact.
  • information on the Jedi’s outreach programs and the Corps are readily available but the general public do not really care about the space wizards beyond what they can do for them personally.
  • Mace Windu and Plo Koon are married. no, you can’t tell me i’m wrong.
  • there is a bet on how long they have been married within the younger generations (their Padawans and so on) but the only consensus they can agree on is that it has been more than 20 years.
  • creche and Initiate clans are usually very tight knit and keep those bonds throughout life.
  • after the Knighting ceremony is a private ceremony between Master and Padawan where they meditate together and the Padawan gifts the Master with their braid. they are usually very much communing with the Force during this happening, and it is sometimes referred to as Force-blessed.
  • gifting the braid outside of one’s lineage is seen as a rejection of one’s Master, unless meditated on and discussed beforehand.
  • gifting the braid outside the Order is generally unheard of and is taken as a rejection of the Jedi as a whole, and usually results in the Force reacting negatively in some way.
  • there is a holocron that keeps track of all lineages that updates itself with the Force. so the braid gifting is kept tracked of and updates accordingly. (this is totally how the Force works, canon has not told me otherwise.)
  • most Jedi avoid the medbay because of psychic imprints left behind, of pain and hurts etc. the Healers understand this, and so they generally meditate and project feelings of calm but it never fully dissipates.
  • the more sensitive Jedi choose to ask to be treated in their own quarters surrounded by the imprint of themselves and their lineages and friends. it is calming for them, and makes it easier on the Healers to treat them too.
  • the Jedi are so used to it being general knowledge amongst their own that they forget their troopers do not know, and so come across as just stubborn and bad patients to the clone medics.

War & the Jedi

This will be a long meta rant, FYI.

The Jedi Order, specifically the Prequel era Jedi Order, gets a lot of hate these days particularly regarding their involvement in the Clone Wars. Accusations are tossed at their feet constantly ranging from corruption all the way up to warmongering

Let’s first look at the Oxford English Dictionary definition of these two accusations, shall we?

Corruption - having or showing a willingness to act dishonestly in return for money or personal gain.

Warmonger - a person who encourages or advocates aggression towards other countries or groups.

The definitions of these two words are so very misunderstood when it comes to relation to the Jedi. If the Jedi are truly “corrupt” then where are the examples of their dishonesty for wealth or personal gain? In fact, I’d argue that canon (and Legends) makes a point to show us that it is the Sith who are in it for personal gain, not the Jedi. The Jedi have absolutely NOTHING to gain from this war on a personal level, in fact they are losing members in terrifying numbers.

The Jedi are also not advocating aggression towards the Separatists, in fact what we see instead is the Jedi DEFENDING against the Separatists. I have yet to see in either canon or legends an instance where the Republic forces invade a Separatist planet who doesn’t have an army or some military involvement (i.e. weapon factories). However, time after time we see the Separatists forcing peaceful planets who want nothing to do with them to either bow to their cause or die (i.e. Ryloth, Lurmen planet, Kiros, Mandalore) the Jedi and Republic Troops will then follow the Separatists to these planets, but they try to do what they can to liberate the planet from the Separaist invasion and then they give the planet the OPTION to join the Republic for safety and economic reasons, but they never force them, as is super evident with Mandalore.

Yet people don’t seem to see this and continue to drag the Jedi through the mud.

List of Jedi that are Perfect

So listen, I know Obi-Wan has a lot of fans who will endlessly talk about how perfect he is and that he invented perfection. However, I would like to put forward that the Jedi in general some other Jedi also are perfect and invented perfection. Here is a very small number of them.

Luminara Unduli

She makes sure she’s prepared, loves her padawan, and is very good at staying focused. She also is good at accepting reality and growing as a person. Have I mentioned that she’s also just really nice? Plus, she pulls off black better than any Sith.

Kit Fisto

He’s cheerful, loves his former Padawan, and is very good at puzzles. He is also good at accepting reality. Did I mention that he’s also very kind? Plus, you can’t deny he has a good smile.

Mace Windu

He is dutiful, focused, and patient. He is also cool and composed. Did I mention that he’s also super nice and kind as well? And you can’t deny the coolness that is purple lightsaber.

Yoda

Possibly the most perfect of all. He is wise, humorous, and kind. He also loves teaching, his grandpadawans, and teaching his grandpadawans. Did I mention that he loves all the Jedi and loves teaching them? And there is no denying he is a great frog grandpa.

(If anyone else wants to add on to this with a Jedi you think is perfect, or talk more about the ones I already listed, feel free. The only rule I’m laying down is no Obi-Wan, because there is more then enough on the internet about how Obi-Wan is perfect.)

Ao3 had put “#Jedi Culture Respected” as synonymous to “#Jedi Culture and Traditions” (which was not the same thing), and now they’ve changed it again and we finally have an actual “#Jedi Appreciation” tag.

*cue happy noises*

By the way, there’s also a Mace Windu Fandom Safe Space that’s been around for years on Ao3 but isn’t too well known. Definitely encourage you to check it out and use it!

I kinda always have this thing in the back of my head where this temple is ready to share force sensitive abilities to non force sensitives.

It happened when the sith empire was still a thing. Jedi and force sensitives understood the pain the universe was in with the sith just adding to it and yet no one really seemed to care or like jedi for following the force, for feeling the deaths and hatred and just general force things.

I have this random jedi that was not well liked by their parents and people around them bc they did not understand what the force felt like to them. However they used their ability to do not so legal or good things before the jedi came and got them out of their custody. So they barely escaped becoming a dark sider or sith and got their trust broken by non force sensitives and an example of the jedi 'stealing children'.

Thankfully liked being a jedi more than sith bc they felt it. They felt it everytime they did awful things to people but just wanted to be accepted by family and friends that they had to endure it. Being a jedi allowed them to feel peace, acceptance, understanding and let them heal the universe instead of furthering fear and hatred.

The thing was... They never really trusted those that could not feel the force. Because while jedi do not tell ppl how to live their lives they can feel the effects. They could not understand, all they heard was mystic mumble jumbo unless the effects were powerful enough to let non force sensitives feel it.

So they had this project: make a thing to let non force sensitives feel the force. Not make them able to manipulate it, no that was beyond their reach. Just make everyone feel the force - the empathy of good, bad ect. The bare minimum. Just feel the state of the galaxy and not become full jedi or sith - or non group force sensitives. It would basically make everyone empath.

However, it was not really something a lot of ppl liked bc they didnt have the ability so why bother, too costly and worry about the misuse ect

This jedi gathered the others they had found, those that were not accepted by their family bc of them being force sensitive. If others could just feel what was happening then maybe this would not happen again.

So they made a temple and the force flowed through them for their success. But it was not able to be completed/turn on until the clone wars - why? Bc reasons.

So anyway turn to the clone wars. Jedi are tired. There is all this death, pain and misery everywhere they go but they are generals for the republic. They deal but non jedi do not understand. Until they come across this old jedi temple and activate it.

It pulses out the things to make everyone non force sensitive empathetic to everything in the galaxy at once. Feeling what the jedi feel. Not able to manipulate the force but they feel the darkness, the pain and suffering and death all at once. Thankfully no one dies and there were no fights happening.

A message also come sup on the holonet everywhere with the jedi who made this happen explain that they are tired of the sith worsening the galaxy. That the jedi are powerless to stop it but feel everything yet the ones who do not feel anything worsen everything ect.

Therefore the jedi says, they decided that if the jedi could not convince anyone then they have to feel everything that is happening. They have to feel the suffering of their citizens and neighbors. They have to feel the death and destruction and feel it when they are doing so. Feel the intense agony from centuries past that still give pain to those that feel it. They have to feel everything.

But it isnt just negative. Feel the positives as well. Feel the love, devotion and care people feel for you. Feel the good things.

While this project started bc of all the negatives, feel the positives. Feel the force and know the love.

Basically jedi are sending care and love to their clone troopers while this is happening and their worry.

Jedi have been described as emotionless but when ppl can feel the force it isnt so.

Also headcanon that jedi communication tends to also be through the force and emotions.

Yeah... The galaxy feels everything but can not do anything with it except with how they go about their daily lives.
