Avatar AU/fic prompt where Ozai words his request to crown to Sozin a bit differently and Sozin instead says not to kill your son but kill your heirs.

Azula and Zuko both hear this and instead of Azula being happy she is terrified because she knows how much Ozai wants the crown and is having mini breakdown because her worth always been in how Ozai treated her as a prodigy and his favorite but she knows he’ll discard her and cue world few shattering slightly, Zuko meanwhile is panicking and seeing Azula panic and hey that’s not happened before oh no ok *big brother instincts activate* and is just ‘let’s run he can’t kill us if we’re not here’

Which leads Azula and Zuko to stowaway on a fire nation ship their not paying attention to where it’s going or what it’s doing just that it’s not here.

So when Hakoda finds 2 kids on a fire nation ship they manage to get the best of both with very obvious trauma is just like ‘…yeah nope’

Just Azula and Zuko being raised in the water tribe.

Sokka and Zuko are the best of friends, Sokka says girls can’t be warriors once and then has half his hair burned off by Azula (he amends that very quickly) Katara also thinks it’s hilarious. Katara and Azula are polar opposites but still friends (Katara is 98% of her impulse control)

Just Hakoda and Kanna being super positive and loving and caring influences in their lives and helping these 2 actually grow up happily as siblings.

(Also they don’t actually realize their members of the royal family for a long time and when they do are just like…yeah fire lord definitely needs to die like so much)

The group still find Aang of course and decide to travel with him.

Zhao is the main one chasing them to capture both Aang and Azula (because Ozai doesn’t really care about an heir but Azula was a prodigy and is useful)

Zuko and Sokka are a pinning mess, the 2 of them having hopeless crushes on each other (Katara and Azula having been calling each other sister and Katara has the wedding already planned if one of them would just SAY SOMETHING already!)

In the Northern water tribe it’s not Sokka who gets a crush it’s Azula who for once in her life becomes a fumbling mess and is just heart eyes (when she’s not trying to murder Pakku with Katara she doesn’t like him even after he agrees to teach Katara just sits there watching the lesson staring at him with evil eye Pakku is slightly afraid for his life) Zhao never gets to kill the moon spirit (the group have 2 very pissed fire benders and no one kidnapped Aang)

Azula:Yes murder

Aang:No murder

Azula:Ok but counterpoint  …Yes murder

Zhao is the one stuck chasing them through book 2 because he’s not dead only none of them take him seriously and he’s just so done with all of this ‘should be the moon slayer but no i’m stuck chasing a gaggle of teenagers across the earth nation’

Iroh’s still there he didn’t really have a reason to stick around the capital so instead is just full time chilling as a white lotus trying to take down his brother.

Hmm, this all seems pretty great I just see one detail that I feel shouldn’t be overlooked for this AU. What’s Ursa up to in all this?

I mean since Zuko and Azula bail early on, she doesn’t really have a reason to help Ozai assassinate Azulon/gain the throne, so she wouldn’t be banished for treason. At the same time with her kids gone she’s got no reason to stick around the fire nation.

I feel she should have a more proactive role in this story than she does in canon.

YES! 100%

In this AU i thought that maybe no one finds out that Azula and Zuko had run away until after the assassination (I just imagine that after it’s done her going to see Zuko only he’s gone…and just the realization it was for nothing she may not even know if Ozai has killed him or not as she’s just banished)

,Or alternatively if they found out before it may make Azulon think that Ozai sent the kids away and caused an agni Kai which Ozai managed to win (most likely through cheating) making him fire lord in which cause not banished but  yeah I 100% agree I can’t see Ursa sticking around and would definitely be in the ‘let’s kill Ozai club’. It would be awesome if she somehow got involved with the White Lotus.

Things I’d want if they were going to make a season 4 of avatar:

  • Zuko making actual friends within his staff and ambassadors from other countries, where people are always on high guard when they first meet him until they have a conversation with him and then they’re almost always super relieved that this is the firelord
  • Azula getting the chance to come to terms with how traumatized she actually is and slowly learning to love herself and others
  • The warriors of Kyoshi
  • Katara just going “hey I’m one of Zuko’s advisors now” and turning anyone who tells her she can’t do that into ice blocks, and then working with Zuko to fix the damage that the fire nation caused and help the nations heal, while also fighting anyone who questions Zuko’s authority before he gets a chance to fight them himself; and no one can tell her to stop because the alternative is letting Zuko get into fistfights with random nobles and that’s not good for publicity
  • Toph and Aang being bffs outside of war-related missions and just joking and going on vacation or something because they’re babies and they deserve a break
  • Mai getting some actual creative outlets now that she has friends who she can trust to not backstab her, and slowly turning from “the world sucks and I just want to be distracted from it” to some kind of artist or writer who’s still emo but also choosing to see some of the good things in the world
  • Toph just referring to Zuko as her brother and Iroh as her uncle without any explanation, and everyone else just going with it. At some point they’re all talking about Azula and Toph’s like “I know she’s evil but she’s also my sister so...” and literally no one corrects her, including Azula
  • Momo taking turns between being Katara’s therapy animal and Zuko’s therapy animal
  • Azula escaping prison halfway through her redemption arc and attacking the Gaang and being like “i could kill you all if i wanted, except Toph, obviously, because she’s my sister” and Zuko being like “but I’m your brother?” And both Toph and Azula being like “yeah? What about it?”
  • Talk about how they’re going to rebuild the air nomad kingdom and protect their culture; also talk about rebuilding the southern water tribe in which Katara is able to actually get all of her intense emotions off of her chest and talk about how sad she is that the southern water tribe has been weakened
  • Appa also getting a break and probably going on vacation with Aang, too
  • Toph not even needing to pull the “I’m a Beifong” card anymore because “I’m the princess of the fire nation” is an even better card to pull and no one in the palace is going to argue with her because Azula and Zuko will both swear on their life that Toph is their actual little sister and she was just hiding this entire time
  • Ty Lee and Zuko being friends; in a very chaotic friendship where Ty Lee is like “screw your firelord duties we’re going to go have a competition where we see how long we can stay standing on our hands at the back of the theater while we watch this play before a security guard tells us to stop”
  • Aang coming back from his vacation and instantly bonding with Ty Lee and upping the chaos even further
  • You know what also I want Ty Lee and Aang to go penguin sledding together, it’s what they deserve
  • I’m stopping for now but my brain is still coming up with more things I want constantly
Toph: hey so, obviously I want to you stay healthy and whatever, but like, theoretically
Zuko: what?
Toph: if I was to become firelord
Zuko: yeah?
Toph: would it be legal to change the title to melon lord?
Azula: yes, absolutely

Ty lee uses her chi blocking on Zuko in the competition so he Can’t cheat with firebending, also because she gets to practice surprise attacks.

I want to see Loserlord *zai react to Toph-

Do Mai and Suki get along I need to know for s ci e n ce

Mai and Aang frendship: he's good at cheering peope up and could definitely listen and wait for her to open up and she seems like the kind of person who would be very interested in hearing about the airbender culture, they could have some really interesting convorsations and I feel she could be the person to start writing (fiction) books about the war that aren't propaganda or start whatever the inworld version of a angry emo band with very political messages is

And of course Toph and Zuko get their lifechanging fieldtrip

Listen. Zuko toph and azula get fire sibs life changing field trip.

There is a lot of breaking into, actual breaking, explosions and chaos that comes with the fire princess that conquered ba sing se with no deaths and bloodless, the blind bandit -avatar earthbender- creator of metalbending (also melon lord), and fire lord -blue spirit- avatar firebender, and just themselves.

dumb atla fanfic idea: ozai is thrown back in time—to the time when firelord azulon still sat on the throne. when ursa had not disappeared into the arms of her lover, ikem. when he still had his bending. when the avatar had not reappeared.

when all was right with the world.

ozai’s ready to conquer the world—nine years earlier than planned, nine years before sozin’s comet was set to arrive.

what he did not expect was that the one thing standing in his way of success was his eldest son—in the body of a five-year old.

((where ozai and zuko travel back in time and try to thwart each other in every way possible while everyone’s confused by second prince ozai’s great amount of disdain for his only son and said son’s pettiness towards his father))

*in the middle of a war meeting*

Ozai: I suggest we send Prince Zuko with the 37th battalion to fight against the Earth rebels.

War General, very concerned: Prince Zuko is a five-year old.

Ozai, staring at him straight in the eye: I am aware.

Zuko: Listen

Zuko: I have no idea who posted those wanted posters of my father

Zuko: Nor do I have any idea who keeps harassing him with rotten food

Zuko: And who chooped off his goatee

Zuko, making eye-contact with Ozai: It must’ve been the Blue Spirit.

*in the middle of another war meeting which Zuko managed to squeeze himself into*

Zuko, after an hour of low-key arguing with Ozai: I apologize for cutting you off, Father.

Zuko: But can you speak louder?

Zuko: Your ego is deafening.

@aboutiroh this is a beautiful addition. I present this:

Hakoda wasn’t sure what he expected when another Fire Nation ship came into view just seconds after the soldiers stormed down the first one.
“Shit,” he hears Bato mutter behind him.
Hakoda echoed the sentiment albeit silently. Their chances were looking way too grim. He grips his spear tighter. He could only hope Kya, their children, and the rest of tribe could escape safely and make it out alive.
Just as he was about to signal his men to charge, a white flag from the second ship was raised into the air, almost frantically.
Was this the Fire Nation’s new tactic? Hakoda wondered. Lulling their enemies into a false sense of security before ambushing them with greater numbers. He wasn’t going to fall for that. It doesn’t diminish their greater numbers though. The Fire Nation soldiers, loathe he is to admit it, could overpower them at this very moment already, except—
A visible tide of confusion rippled through the first wave of Fire Nation soldiers. They fall back. But not before Hakoda catches whiff of the words, “Dragon of the West”.
Ice washes over Hakoda. It was worse than he thought. He can already see his men hesistating, the younger ones shaking, in his peripheral.
He signals them to wait. Rushing would do them no good. He needed to see the number of men on board before changing strategies.
The hunk of metal docked, creaking grimly before the ramp lowered and hit the ice with a loud thud.
Hakoda blinked.
What came out was a child—likely around Sokka’s age—waving a white flag obviously too big for his body to carry.
The child, seeing that everyone was too stunned to react and attack, gave them a practiced, dimplomatic smile.
“Chief Hakoda,” he greets. “May I steal your children?”

This is the best AU because

- The Gaang is all 10 years younger, except Aang who is still 12.

- Zuko shows up at the SWT and goes “Chief Hakoda I know this sounds confusing but I need your children to stop my douchebag father and end this war”

- He finds Aang in that iceberg to prove his point “See, I even got the Avatar for you, now can I pleeeaaaase go travel the world with Sokka and Katara”

- Aang is very confused too but he just rolls with it

- Azula contemplates whether she should continue to try and impress her dad or go with Zuko. She goes with Zuko.

- Iroh hasn’t started his Siege of Ba Sing Se yet. He’s not post-redemption Iroh, but he’s got it in him somewhere and tiny Zuko awakens it.

- While they’re traveling on Appa, Zuko sees Toph and goes “WAIT we have to abduct that blind baby playing with the badgermoles”

- at this point nobody questions him anymore and they get baby Toph on board. She’s two and somehow still the most badass among all of them.

- Ozai is defeated by a bunch of toddlers and children and is now even more pathetic.

Additionally,

- Rumors of children being randomly abducted spread like wildfire.

- More so after a child from Kiyoshi Island, despite being neutral to the war, was stolen.

- With the knowledge that the Avatar has, in fact, reappeared, people conclude that the Avatar is a kidnapper.

- After kidnapping Toph, Zuko presents her to Aang saying, “This is you earthbending master.”

- Aang is hesistant. But then he sees baby Toph bend metal (“Uh, Zuko, I don’t think you should buy metal baby toys” “Trust me, Aang. I know what I’m doing”<<He does this because adult!Toph once said that plastic and wooden baby toys were for the weak) and he’s immediately sold.

- Nobody outside the gaang is sure whether or not Aang’s serious about calling a two-year old sifu. Said two year old cackles everytime she’s addressed that way.

- Sokka develops a childhood crush on Suki and bullies her in response. He stops when Suki beats his ass and gives him a stern talk.

- Sokka begins following Suki like a lost puppy.

- Katara first learns waterbending from the swampbenders when Zuko took them on a detour.

- Zuko sends Azula and Ursa letters every now and then, updating them about important stuff. (Dear mother, I am now travelling with a two-year old. Best wishes, Zuko)

- Ursa travels away from the Fire Nation in search of Zuko after Azula ran over to her and began bawling about Zuzu replacing her as his sister.

- Cue mother-daughter bonding as they travel around the Earth Kingdom in disguises in search of Zuko and his gaggle of toddlers. (Azula basks in the attention from her mother that she’s always yearned for.)

- Ursa bumps into Kya and Hakoda and team up. They exchange stories and they all agree that there needs to be a change in Firelord.

- Kya gives Azula candy, Hakoda teaches Azula how to defend herself with a knife, Ursa guides her through firebending katas. Needless to say, Azula is showered in actual love and is happy.

- Team Actually-Trying-To-Be-Good-Parents reunites with the gaang and after a bit of scolding and a fair share of fretting have dinner like one big family.

- To Sokka’s horror, Azula gets along very well with Momo. Azula also proceeds to teach Katara how to fight with a knife.

- Meanwhile, Iroh is travelling the world with Lu Ten after Ozai’s obvious assasination of the late Firelord Azulon. Together, they go through multiple spiritual hijinks, uncover lost civilizations, find themselves embroiled in conspiracies about cabbages, and discover the order of the white lotus.

- Zuko and Iroh’s letter exchanges are wild.

- Ozai ascends to the throne with an empty palace, heirs somewhere around the world, a half-cut goatee (courtesy of the Blue Spirit), and an avatar under the guidance of his son, gearing to end his reign once more. He briefly wonders if he should’ve chased after his son instead of assasinating his father.

Every single time. This post, I swear. It keeps getting better.

Okay but does Lu Ten end up as Firelord or do they just plop literal gremlin child Zuko on the throne and give him baby Firelord robes

Because, if it’s the latter, that’s adorable but hoo boy the royal tailors are going to hate puberty.

*after defeating Ozai*

Zuko, a 7-year old: I will ascend the throne.

Everyone: CHILD NO.

Zuko: I will ascend.

The Ozai loyalists at court are prepared for the greatest shitshow on earth once a literal 7-year old becomes Firelord and gleefully bid their time until his undoubtedly imminent failure, but the little demon is actually doing… well?

The tiny monster’s feet aren’t even touching the ground from where he sits on the throne, but he is nonetheless happily debunking the merits of class-specific household registration and demanding cuts be made to the military budget and when did he even learn those words?!

Lu Ten, of course, is delighted to be his little cousin’s advisor, because from up here he gets to see all the fantastic faces that the royal councillors make when their tiny Firelord talks about things like “our public schooling system is frankly atrocious, Minister Seng, and I will no longer stand idly by while our youth is fed propaganda; here, I’ve put together an overview of the new curriculum, you and the Cabinet of Education are to refine and implement this, effective immediately.”

Things get even better when, not 5 minutes later, the little Firelord proceeds to call the Minister of Education a “big dumdum”.

I left my bullshit for a minute so i could make something wholesome

he baby i love him

Help this is too hilarious

Sokka: ...what?

Zuko: the scar on my eye? did I never tell you guys my father did that?

Aang: *Pulls out gun and cocks it* Alright lets fucking do this.

the raw power of imagining Aang holding a gun is too much for me the boy knows he can outdo a gun in power but he’s so mad that he makes the statement with the weapon that killed world leaders

I love how all of the Fire nation would just casually reveal more and more awful things that they thought were normal.

Sokka’s like “OMG, Katara was an annoying kid, she kept trying to catch fish with her water bending and got me all wet.”

Katara’s like “That was your fault Sokka.”

Like Zuko’s, trying to fit in, is like “Azula as a kid started throwing rocks at baby lionturtles.”

Everyone else: ...

Zuko: did...did nobody else’s siblings do that?

Everyone else: *shakes their heads*

Zuko: ...you know, that explains a lot.

Later, when Zuko tries to get Mei to bond with the gang, and it turns out she’s as bad as him at these things.

Mei: ...

Everyone else: ...

Zuko: ...

Katara: So...when did you fall in love with Zuko?

Zuko: Wait, Mei, don’t-

Mei: I was a friend of Azula’s, and Zuko happened to be around a lot. And was very...attractive.

Sokka: Awww, that’s so sweet.

Zuko: Really? I thought you liked me after that?

Mei: Yeah, it started early.

Mei: And when Zuko Firebent an apple off of my head, I was terrified but from then on, I trusted my life to him.

Everyone else: ...

Mei: Azula was a lot of things, but she knew trust building exercises.

Aang: ...sorry, how old were you guys when this happened?

Zuko: Eight.

Sokka: So Azula convinced an Eight year old to firebend another eight year old, almost in the face.

Zuko: Yeah...I know.

Mei: What?

Zuko: Babe, Azula was expecting me to miss.

Mei: But then you would’ve fire...bent...me...in the...face...oh god-

Zuko: Yeah.

Mei: Oh.

Zuko: yeah.

Mei: She actually tried to kill me?!?!??

Zuko: Sorry.

Mei: When we were eight?!?!?

Zuko: I find that almost any memory of Azula turns out to be fairly traumatic.

Everyone else: *nods sympathetically*

Mei: What the hell...

Also if you think about it (warning for angst)

Zuko has trauma from all of fire nation royal family.

Firstly, his grandfather. Azulon. Ordered ozai to learn the pain of losing his firstborn son. (Either telling him to kill zuko or was thinking of giving zuko to iroh. We will never know)

Second. His mother left an emotional scar on his heart and emotions because she left. And may have killed the fire lord. But she left him with azula and ozai who are not good for him.

Third. Ozai most likely physically and emotionally abused zuko (lucky to be born ect.) But we cant show that on a children's show, so we can just show this father burning his son's face off for speaking out of turn to protect fire nation soldiers.

Fourth. Azula, she was his sister but was twisted to ozai's side. She also most likely physically and emotionally abused him, trying to imitate and receive approval from ozai. She did try killing him many times. She left a final would of a lightning scar.

Lu ten. Broke zuko's heart as his cousin didnt return and now the crown prince position is his after everything.

Iroh. Probably healed his heart after getting the uphill battle that is to trust that uncle isnt trying to get zuko as a replacement for lu ten.

Avatar

Fire nation telling the world that they love zuko.

Because this kid is not homicidal.

Now, you might be thinking "what about his mother?" Listen. Most scandalous thing.

Sozin started everything by killing air nomads and dragons.

Azulon continued with water tribe and earth kingdom.

Ozai just furthered killing everyone.

We have been at war for 100 years.

Iroh just left and abandoned everyone after losing lu ten.

Ursa most likely killed azulon.

Azula is azula.

We finally have a royal that did not want more war, cares about the world and fire nation, and is not likely to kill someone for a minor offence.

Clearly he is the best royal in our time.

I’m trying to picture what Chaos Avatar Zuko would look like from an outsider perspective before anyone figures out exactly what that is and my mind just keeps jumping to like Poltergeist or Paranormal Activity. Like the Fire Sages attempting an exorcism at some point because obviously this is the world of a mega spirit curse and an ancient spirit who promises destruction is not an acceptable imaginary friend.

There are two starting points I'm deciding from for this story: pre-banishment or post. Currently leaning towards pre-banishment because they are legit going to think he's straight up possessed by the worst evil spirit on record and they won't be wrong.

Uncle, having tea party with his nephew and only paying half-attention because he's still on Grief Mode: Ah, and what is your imaginary friend's name?

bb!Zuko: HE'S NOT IMAGINARY! His name is Vaatu and he says we'll be great together and that he'll never leave me, and he's always there even in the middle of the night when I--he just. He's always there. He's my best friend and he's real.

Uncle: Mmmhmm, mmmhmm, mmm--*chokes on tea as his brain catches up to "Vaatu"* I... see. Does your friend tell you to do things, sometimes?

bb!Zuko, so excited that Uncle believes him because only Azula ever has and she pretends not to: All the time! He has really good advice, like how to make my fire bigger and how to make Captain Zhao stay away from me, you should have seen his face--

And so begins Uncle's frantic research and attempts to exorcise his nephew.

Ozai is more than happy to listen to his brother's solemn counsel that something with Zuko is not right. He has a much more direct way of solving the problem, however.

All he does, he does for the Fire Nation. You understand, right son? Kneel right here and Father will help you--

Avatar

(Vaatu is not letting some prissy dude with a stupid smirk burn HIS new Fire Son, no sir.)

(Also he grabs the girl on his way out. She's fun and great at causing some quality chaos, and he's sure they can train the weird anger and defensive sadism into something productive!! She's so cute!!)

During the northern water tribe arc, imagine if none of the gaang try to take zuko with them who is a fire bender unconscious in the snow during a blizzard?

So most things go as normal but iroh and fire nation learns that the avatar and his companions left and most likely left the prince (sure he is a banished and exiled prince, but still a prince) and after aang lets the ocean spirit kill the entire fleet that they cant defend themselves against? They would be angry if they were defeated by humans but a spirit? That is plain cheating. And shows that the avatar and spirits are being used against the fire nation and the others are glad.

(Spoilers but zuko did live and manage to live incognito or traveling in the earth kingdom under an alias... He is tired and didn't have enough time to tell uncle or anyone else given the posters)

So after everything the gaang and the world think they killed the fire nation prince. And set the ocean spirit on the fire nation navy.

Iroh also thinks that. He lasts long enough to get to earth kingdom but now 'lost' the last thing, his second son. And he did so to the water tribe and the avatar with his companions. The avatar is the bridge but he also bridged and set the ocean spirit on the fire nation.

So the fire lord is happy (inside) that his son can be used for propaganda. His son was so close to getting rid of the threat the avatar represents and he was to bring alive to him. However, the avatar killed the crown prince and next in line as well as setting loose the spirits against the fire nation, which is what the fire lords and zuko died trying to prevent.

Azula is now given all the resources needed to capture or KILL avatar and friends before they bring the evil to the capital.

All of fire nation will hear of what they did and now will be on a war path. You thought before was a war path? Haven't seen a real one. Their prince is dead, killed trying to prevent what happened. The avatar, bridge between spirits and humans set a spirit, the very ocean itself, and destroyed and killed a large navy. They see the princess as the next ruler in line and going to stop the avatar.

Also the water tribes. Hakoda and the southern water tribe men are fighting but they prob weren't a high priority. Now they are. And guess who is just women and children in their home? Now they have hostages. While the northern water tribe will try to go and help, they have to go near fire nation ocean territory. And given what just happened, they are going to be pissed. The avatar is gone to earth kingdom... Fight the northern water tribe on the new moon while he is gone.

Then they can focus on earth kingdom. Well, azula is with her resources that arent fighting and destroying water tribe.

She meets the avatar and group and starts the fight by talking about zuko. Her older brother, crown prince who couldn't go home unless he captured and presented the avatar to their father. But the avatar killed him. While pretending (and getting unnecessary feels that almost make it true) to care, she suddenly stops and thanks them. She pronounces that since zuko isnt alive or unbanished, she is now crown princess and next in line for the throne. She wishes she was there while zuko breathed his last and also sad that she or father couldnt be the ones to kill him.

Also maybe iroh is with them, giving information. He would have liked to help the avatar but that was before they killed his nephew. His second son. Also the dragon of the west came out of retirement to burn down ba sing se.

Stuff happens but the water tribes and earth kingdom get to know how it feels when the fire nation is literally breathing down your throat and trying to conquer. Fire nation was doing so without interference of spirits or avatar but then water tribe called the avatar and ocean spirit to do their work for them because they would have lost and the fire nation cant fight fairly against that. Well now they dont have to fight or win fair because if the others do that, then so can the fire nation.

Stuff happens but then zuko happens. Look, he has been hiding and resting from the world and didnt know he was dead. So he goes to fire nation and hey, prince made it! He survived the avatar and his companions killing him! Along with the cold as well as the ocean spirit.

Don't know where this is going but its a 'consequences if zuko "died", but not really' and also because I dont want him actually dead and he has survived worse.

WHO TOLD YOU THAT THIS WAS OKAY

Isn’t this rather out of character?

Avatar

No. No it’s not. Because of this:

Do you see that?^

Because the rivalry wasn’t always there.

Because she was little once.

Because there was a time when she wasn’t a strategic genius and a firebending prodigy.

Because he didn’t always have to live under her shadow just ‘cause their scumbag of a father said so.

Because once they were just kids.

So no, dear, it’s not out of character. Not at all.

This is why I always, always appreciate how their final agni kai was framed. It wasn’t a big hero moment for Zuko, it wasn’t an action spectacular. It was a tragedy. The sins of the parents–and Ursa is not blameless in this–played out in their children. So much damage done. In another time, with a different upbringing, they could’ve been like Sokka and Katara. Instead? Instead…

THESE KIDS

Avatar

The next time there’s a discussion about how overly dramatic and emo Zuko is can we please remember that:

1. His mother was an actor.

2. This was his father.

Honestly the poor boy didn’t stand a chance

The whole family are drama llamas! Dramatic, ottp, fools, All of them.

I’d actually say Ozai was the most dramatic. He can out drama both his kids. Look at the costumes and staging of his whole phoenix king schtick. Look at how he over-reacts to pretty much everything.

I agree that Ozai is the most dramatic the man is absolutely ridiculous, but Iroh is a close second.

A whole family of drama llamas indeed!

Ohmigod, how could I forget Iroh’s many notable performances)!

Fire nation royalty is just that dramatic. Imagine all the theatre and plays they sponsored and watched to add drama.

This is why zuko is upset with iroh all the time. He acts like an old man. Meanwhile zuko knows he can be the dragon of the west if he actually wanted to. He just doesnt.

A Kidnapping

An AU where Lu Ten didn’t die at the Wall in Ba Sing Se and returned home with his father after secretly taking the city. Everyone thinks they’ve lost, when Iroh is controlling every aspect of the Dai Li.

At home, Fire Lord Azulon is still alive and kicking and Ursa is still home and Azula’s a little brat and Zuko is just… trying to keep it together.

Life goes on as normal, Iroh as the Crown Prince that never hits rock bottom, never travels to the spirit world to find enlightenment, and remains the same warmongering heir that he’s always been, setting the example for his son to follow in his footsteps.

At thirteen, Zuko begs to enter the war meeting. It goes very similarly in canon. Except since it’s Azulon’s meeting, he is the one disrespected.

He orders Ozai to face his son.

When Zuko is burned and sick with fever, Ursa begs Iroh to change his father’s mind about the banishment. Iroh uses his favor to ensure that his young nephew is allowed to stay at home, he is a child, he’s learned his lesson, he’s loyal to our nation he was only confused as to how best to keep Her good and strong.

Zuko goes quiet. Eventually it’s been years since anyone has heard his voice.

When there is news that the Avatar is alive, Azulon sends Zhao to capture him. Zhao takes Zuko’s place here since Zuko is in disgrace at home.

When Zhao dies in the North Pole, it’s Lu Ten and Azula who are sent to capture the Avatar. It becomes a competition between them. A future Fire Lord versus the second born of the second born, destined for mediocrity.

The thing is, we all know that our darling princess will never settle for anything but the best.

So now life is harder than ever for the gaang, running from two Fire Nation Royals, benders more powerful than any they have ever encountered (sans Toph, because come on). Azula is insane, her little girl group incomprehensibly terrifying. Lu Ten is calm, cool, charming and is actually really nice (a lot like Iroh was in the series, except more murder-y). He takes his father’s place in the scene where he talks with Toph, not knowing she was with the Avatar because she’s such a new addition to the group. He still talks about little cousin Zu Zu, about how sweet and kind-hearted he is and how he can be stubborn as a cat-mule when he wanted to be. How he feels guilty about not being able to save him from his family’s harsh ways and would sometimes dream about taking his Zu Zu - and his cousin Zula, even if she was so incredibly frustrating and cruel to everyone she interacts with - and just disappearing. How he loves his father, but after the things he’s seen in war… he wasn’t sure if he could agree with him anymore.

Azula fires at Sokka instead of Iroh.

Lu Ten disappears with her.

They move forward, Lu Ten and Azula have teamed up again at the outer wall. They fail, but not before that hilarious slipping scene when Aang gets smacked between Azula and the wall and Azula gets smushed between Aang and Lu Ten.

It’s a mess, honestly.

So now, it’s after Ba Sing Se and the gaang convenes at the Western Air Temple. It’s a few days in, they have people coming in and out going over plans for the Invasion, and they go exploring in the woods across the chasm.

There’s swooshing and crackling and everyone present has the sound of firebending carved into their brains in a way they’ll never forget. Everyone ducks and peers through the foliage.

There’s a boy who couldn’t be much older than Sokka all alone, practicing firebending. His hair is dark and shaggy and his skin is pale and his red Fire Nation garb matches the brutal scar encapsulating a good third of his face and drawing one eye into a permanent glare.

“How did he find us?” Sokka whispers.

(Spoiler: the boy hears him)

The firebender whips around defensively and the youngest of the Avatar’s group steps forward boldly. “Who are y-”

He lashes out.

Toph is yelling on the ground, clutching her feet, and Katara is already fighting, Sokka takes the little earthbender and runs, and Aang is trying to calm everyone down.

The boy doesn’t move like the firebenders they’ve faced before. He’s fluid, extending his fire like it were a part of him, almost dancing.

Aang is awed.

Katara is furious.

Eventually the boy wins and leaves the two of them puffing on the ground, unable to rise and fight.

He halts his final blow, staring.

The Avatar stares back.

It’s a strange connection that Aang can’t even begin to describe. Like he’s a total stranger and yet has known him for a thousand years. Familiar in a way he couldn’t place. Kindred spirits.

The boy disappears.

Back at camp, Aang thinks back to something Jeong Jeong told him.

“I cannot teach you the practice of fire. To me, it is a curse. A curse that only death can free me of. You, young Avatar, need a master who has seen the extent of fire’s evils. Who has personally suffered these hurts and injustices, yet breathes in the embers and roars his flames bright enough to encircle the earth a million and one times.”

They talk about the firebender that night.

“I’m telling you, it was an accident,” Toph groaned out for what felt like the hundredth time. “He was surprised. I got too close and I got burned. Literally.”

Aang snorted into his bowl.

Katara shot him a sharp look and shook her head in disgust. “He’s a firebender. They’re all the same. He probably wanted to try and scare us or something.”

Kill us,” Sokka snapped. “I don’t think it’s safe here. We need to move out before he comes back or sends reinforcements.”

“Aang?” Toph asked. “You haven’t said anything.”

All eyes turned to Aang. He looked up, only the sigh and set down his half finished food.

“I think that guy’s supposed to be my firebending teacher.”

That morning, Sparky Sparky Boom Man appears.

The boy saves them.

Before he can disappear again, Aang flies up to the cliff and follows him. When he finally catches up, the boy turned to him, angry and scowling worse than his burned eyes. “What?”

“Thank you,” Aang blurted. “For… you know, saving us.”

The boy grunted. “Sure. Whatever. Don’t follow me.”

Aang gaped at his back before running up and planting himself in front of the firebender. “No, wait! Please, just come meet my friends! I’m sure they want to thank you too!”

The boy stared at Aang blankly before picking him up under the arms and placing him down next to him. He continuing stomping walking away.

Aang groaned and ran back up to grab his arm. “PleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaassseeeeeEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!”

The boy gaped as Aang failed miserably to back the boy budge, pulling and pushing his chest and even jumping on his back at one point trying to fall backwards.

“What are- no don’t- what- stop!”

Aang jumped down and stared up pleadingly.

Please come have breakfast with us.”

The boy clenched his jaw glaring at the small boy before he let out a long suffering sigh, looking heavenward. “If I do this, will you leave me alone?”

Aang nodded vigorously, even if he did feel a little guilty since he knew that he would bother this guy nonstop until he agreed to teach him firebending.

Fine.”

Aang cheered, grabbing the boy’s arm and dragging him back to camp much too enthusiastically, laughing and blabbing and in general because

he just kidnapped his new firebending teacher.

How Zuko faked his death and managed to get everyone sad.

Okay so we know that the fire lord won't cry or have any emotions besides disappointment at zuko whether he lives or dies... Nor does anyone not fire nation or anyone that hasn't known him as enemy.

One idea is after northern water tribe arc. Zuko is 'dead' blame is obviously put on water tribe along with the avatar. Propaganda takes hold and that the prince was viciously murdered and other racist remarks about water tribe but also puts more emphasis on how the avatar truly is an enemy of the fire nation.

Then azula shows up and zuko manages to stay hidden. No one really knows he is alive. So azula manages to capture water tribe, ba sing Dr, gaang. And decides to parade them in front of the ba sing se's throne.

Hakoda, water tribe, earth rebels and gaang are there. She then says she is the younger sister to zuko. She acts sad and mocks about honor and stuff but then just starts laughing. Explains that the water tribe and gaang did better than she and her father expected. How zuko was too soft for fire nation and that he was banished, never to return home unless the impossible task of the avatar brought to fire nation in chains when he hasnt been seen in 100 yrs. But then the impossible became possible. But thanks to the efforts of fire nation enemies, he is dead. She is kind of sad she didnt do it herself. But now there is no question that she will be fire lord after ozai. Along with giving more propaganda to fire nation about how there is proof that everyone is out to kill fire nation - with the support of the avatar - as not only did they kill the fire nation prince doing his duty, but an entire navy fleet. Even those that wanted to rebel is scared more than the threat of earthbenders taking their memories or ruining their hands and feet for no bending - nor the water tribe drowning or freezing to death.

----

Or after eclipse the fire lord proclaims it that the rebels invasion killed the prince. Then he brings in leaders of that along with gaang with azula next to him and thanks them for getting rid of the disappointment that thought he could come home. And other things about glad zuko is gone sad they didnt do it... But now azula is the only heir left. And other things about zuko being weak and wanting to rebel against fire nation but this showed that the non fire nation citizens dont care about those that to help them. And thanks for fueling the rumors of what happens to those that rebel and get into earth kingdom or water tribe hands. It stops traitors effectively.

-----

Basically I want people to realize how much better than the rest of fire nation royals zuko is, especially given what could have happened if zuko died - while zuko still lives but no one knows. Basically consequences.

Because lu ten, iroh's son death caused change in royal family with more hatred and fear of earth kingdom due to them killing possible ruler. Then had the current ruler killed, lady ursa to vanish and ozai fire lord.

Also zuko could died a number of places. But he didnt and won't. But if some people thought he did....

Of course, zuko does pop up like surprise! Ninja.

Role swap au where Zuko was the Avatar who got frozen for a hundred years, so when he’s rescued from the ice instead of a goofy twelve year old Katara catches this mysterious teenager with long hair and a cool scar and a fucking DRAGON

Katara: BOY???? HOT BOY?????? HOT TEENAGE BOY?????????

Zuko: *speaks*

Katara: nevermind I hate him

How does Aang factor into this? I ask because the more I think about it the more I want him to somehow be trying to capture the Avatar.

Aang is 112 years old, decided he was going to be Zuko’s airbending teacher, and refuses to take no for an answer

Aang: Aw, the new Avatar doesn’t want me. Aang: *gets out a weighted net* Time for Plan B then.

JDJSHJABDBFJSH

Look, you know how you keep a net from falling on you? YOU AIRBEND IT, SUCKA. Air comes right after fire in the cycle so it’s not like the guy has any other options. Do you want a flaming net falling on you? No? Then learn to airbend. Or this tiny old man will cart you away like a trussed turkey and lecture you about the power of laughter, going with the flow, opening your chakras, and other hippie shit.

Sokka, slouching against a fence, not moving: Oh nooooooo, that creepy old man stole the Avataaaaaaaaaar. Sokka, sitting down on the ground: We should dooooo something. Sokka, pulling out his lunch: Otherwise he might actually learn something. That would be teeeerrible. Katara, indignant rage coursing through her body: Sokka!!!!!!!! We have to go look for him!!!! Sokka: Might! Actually! Learn! Something! Katara! Katara: *wavers* Katara, also sitting down: We have to go look for him…. *gets out her own sandwich* But, maybe after lunch.

I love that this transforms Aang’s role in the full Team Avatar familial situation from the baby of the family to the Grandpa with weird hobbies

My brain, immediately after the “Aang won’t take no for an answer” post:

Aang: I’m gonna ride him! *jumps on Zuko’s shoulders*

Actually, I thought a bit more about this: If Aang is “grandpa figure who won’t fucking stop teaching Zuko to be a better and more spiritually fulfilled person,” then what is Iroh doing?

And then it hit me.

Iroh: *sitting in a teahouse at a paisho table* Iroh, deadpan: I must capture the last airbender.  Iroh: It is the only way to make sure the powe rof the Avatar won’t be turned on the Fire Nation. Iroh: Only then will I be redeemed in the eyes of the Fire Lord for my failure at Ba Sing Se. Iroh: … Iroh: Anyway, it’s your turn.

About half of the B plots are just Iroh finding new ways to feign incompetence and bad luck so that his political watchdog can’t prove that he’s letting Aang - and by extension Zuko - get away.

Sometimes Iroh plays paisho with Aang, whose entire disguise during these games consists of a painfully fake mustache.

AANG WAS THE OTHER PLAYER IN THAT SCENE OF COURSE IT’S PERFECT (the moustache is just a bit of Appa’s fur tied in a string)

You want drawings, I deliver:

‘The prince in the iceberg’

‘Avatar Zuko’

‘The Old Master’

‘Imprisoned’

‘Zuko’s Master’

‘The Tale of Iroh’

“Iroh, why are you playing Pai Sho with the last airbender?!”

“What are you talking about? This is my good friend Bonzu Pipinpadaloxicopolis.”

*Aang raises three fingers* “The third!”

Okay but in this Au Iroh is Zuko’s nephew, not his uncle.

This is common knowledge. First thing Iroh said to Zuko: ‘Are you my uncle? Mother believed you dead!”

And Zuko is like ‘oh shit’ ‘oh fuck no’ ‘Azula actually reproduced’ ‘She has spawn now’ ‘HOW’’WHO WAS BRAVE ENOUGH TO-AAARGHHHHH’ ‘NOTTHINKINGABOUTITNOTTHINKINGABOUTIT” and then he has a nervous breakdown.

Meanwhile Katara is like ‘yOuR siStER WaS FireLord Azula???’ and Sokka is foaming at the mouth bc FIRELORD AZULA WAS TERRIFYING OKAY SHE CONQUERED BA SING SE IN A DAY AND THEN SHE GAVE IT BACK BC ‘IT WAS TOO DIRTY’ SHE BATHES IN THE TEARS OF NEWBORN CHILDREN AND WEEPING MOTHERS NOT EVEN KOH WOULD DARE TO CROSS FIRELORD AZULA

And Zuko comes back to ‘Well, Lala was always a bit unhinged but go off I guess”

(Sokka is not strong enough to deal with such a terrifying FireLord having a cute nickname like Lala)

And Iroh all casual “She’s retired now. She plays Thunder Pai Sho. It’s like normal Pai Sho but if you make a move she considers too stupid, she shots lighting at you”

Aang, cheerfully “I tried to make a Flower Lotus once and I almost died”

Zuko, deadpan “A pity”

A brilliant addition.

How does azula react to zuko coming back? Calling him zuzu and dum dum while shooting lightning at him as well as other attempts.

Maybe even references to her trying to get him out of the way of succession.

Avatar

Zuko trying to be unbanished bc his sister azula is next in line.

You know she doesnt suffer fools and sets things on fire.

He does not want everything to go wrong and not for his fire nation to be set on fire.

Everything is flammable to azula. Do not test the flammability of fire nation when it is not fire proof.

And then here the avatar and others wont come with him.
