I hope there will be a fic that in s3 the gaang tells their side of what happened to zuko (hakoda also wants to know wtf his children got up to)

Then zuko's side. The search of the avatar for 3 yrs. And everything during the hunt.

Like zuko will be mad bc he thought s1 the bison was doing evasive action.

Imagine the s3 crew learning of Zhao being rude. And creepy.

Just-everything.

Avatar

I really want someone to write a fanfic where after hakoda is with the gaang during s3 zuko starts talking about what he dealt with at the palace.

His father talking about how he almost killed him when he was born bc he didnt have fire bender eyes

How he was lucky to be born while azula was born lucky

Ozai always complimenting azula - naming her after grandfather

Not really having friends

Known to the court that azula was in his favor

Azula lying as well as almost harming her friends as well as scaring him

Ozai just wanting the excuse to get rid of him

Grandfather telling ozai to get rid of him and azula telling zuko that he was going to do it

Mother left and in the morning it turned out grandfather was also dead - she said she was protecting him.

Never matching to azula

Agni Kai- everything. Burning his child who surrendered and disobeyed the order to fight

Being banished at 12/13 to not come back unless he had the avatar - who hadnt been seen in 100 yrs

How when he found aang Zhao was given priority and skipped ranks to chase him while all zuko had was a boat with 'bad' soldiers

How Zhao took his men and blew up his ship to go to the northern water tribe

Azula was to bring him back a traitor before the banishment was removed after water tribe

Everything.

Just. Gaang realizing what happened and what the firelord is like and also to give zuko a better family.

Can we consider how many people Toph caused internal bleeding and broken bones?

oh honey they are fully dead

No but Toph was a professional earthbending wrestler with the power to feel the whole human body at once through vibrations with enough accuracy to tell lies. She knows exactly how much pressure the human body can take before important things start breaking or I’ll go buy a hat for the sole purpose of eating it.

oh, sure. she doesn't care though. she's 12 and she's thriving and she loves to murder

We forgetting about that time Katara cut through an air balloon, and sent a bunch of dudes plummeting to their deaths?

She almost cut Azula's face in half too

Casual reminder that this show was absolutely brutal.

Read The Rise of Kyoshi book to have graphic descriptions of people being impaled, burned, crushed, buried, sliced and so on.

Remember that time when Sokka blew up a side of a mountain which was swarming with Fire Nation troops? Or when Aang sank the invasion fleet at the Northern Water Tribe? Or Sokka/Toph/Suki’s “airship slice?” Yeah, the Gaang definitely took lives

And then Aang goes: “Oh I’m a pacifistic I can’t kill Ozai! It goes against everything I stand for.”

I’ve always wanted Zuko just to be like: “But all of you have killed literal tens of thousands of my countrymen and women. Why does my father, the one who burned my face and is going to obliterate another people get to live?”

And fun fact. Zuko, despite all the negative things everyone says he did. Never actually took lives nor did all that pillaging. Any damage that happened was because people instigated fights with him. He always took extra care to disarm and disable when everyone else in the show just straight up tried to murder him any chance they had.

During the northern water tribe arc, imagine if none of the gaang try to take zuko with them who is a fire bender unconscious in the snow during a blizzard?

So most things go as normal but iroh and fire nation learns that the avatar and his companions left and most likely left the prince (sure he is a banished and exiled prince, but still a prince) and after aang lets the ocean spirit kill the entire fleet that they cant defend themselves against? They would be angry if they were defeated by humans but a spirit? That is plain cheating. And shows that the avatar and spirits are being used against the fire nation and the others are glad.

(Spoilers but zuko did live and manage to live incognito or traveling in the earth kingdom under an alias... He is tired and didn't have enough time to tell uncle or anyone else given the posters)

So after everything the gaang and the world think they killed the fire nation prince. And set the ocean spirit on the fire nation navy.

Iroh also thinks that. He lasts long enough to get to earth kingdom but now 'lost' the last thing, his second son. And he did so to the water tribe and the avatar with his companions. The avatar is the bridge but he also bridged and set the ocean spirit on the fire nation.

So the fire lord is happy (inside) that his son can be used for propaganda. His son was so close to getting rid of the threat the avatar represents and he was to bring alive to him. However, the avatar killed the crown prince and next in line as well as setting loose the spirits against the fire nation, which is what the fire lords and zuko died trying to prevent.

Azula is now given all the resources needed to capture or KILL avatar and friends before they bring the evil to the capital.

All of fire nation will hear of what they did and now will be on a war path. You thought before was a war path? Haven't seen a real one. Their prince is dead, killed trying to prevent what happened. The avatar, bridge between spirits and humans set a spirit, the very ocean itself, and destroyed and killed a large navy. They see the princess as the next ruler in line and going to stop the avatar.

Also the water tribes. Hakoda and the southern water tribe men are fighting but they prob weren't a high priority. Now they are. And guess who is just women and children in their home? Now they have hostages. While the northern water tribe will try to go and help, they have to go near fire nation ocean territory. And given what just happened, they are going to be pissed. The avatar is gone to earth kingdom... Fight the northern water tribe on the new moon while he is gone.

Then they can focus on earth kingdom. Well, azula is with her resources that arent fighting and destroying water tribe.

She meets the avatar and group and starts the fight by talking about zuko. Her older brother, crown prince who couldn't go home unless he captured and presented the avatar to their father. But the avatar killed him. While pretending (and getting unnecessary feels that almost make it true) to care, she suddenly stops and thanks them. She pronounces that since zuko isnt alive or unbanished, she is now crown princess and next in line for the throne. She wishes she was there while zuko breathed his last and also sad that she or father couldnt be the ones to kill him.

Also maybe iroh is with them, giving information. He would have liked to help the avatar but that was before they killed his nephew. His second son. Also the dragon of the west came out of retirement to burn down ba sing se.

Stuff happens but the water tribes and earth kingdom get to know how it feels when the fire nation is literally breathing down your throat and trying to conquer. Fire nation was doing so without interference of spirits or avatar but then water tribe called the avatar and ocean spirit to do their work for them because they would have lost and the fire nation cant fight fairly against that. Well now they dont have to fight or win fair because if the others do that, then so can the fire nation.

Stuff happens but then zuko happens. Look, he has been hiding and resting from the world and didnt know he was dead. So he goes to fire nation and hey, prince made it! He survived the avatar and his companions killing him! Along with the cold as well as the ocean spirit.

Don't know where this is going but its a 'consequences if zuko "died", but not really' and also because I dont want him actually dead and he has survived worse.

Zuko when he first gets banished: Posh upper-class royal fire nation accent, very formal speaking manner, no slang allowed. Zuko when he gets crowned firelord: what the hell is he even saying, mix of Royal Fire with Fire Navy and Earth Kingdom Refugee with hints of Southern Water Tribe, slang taken from all parts of the globe (+ some extinct and outdated airbender and fire nation slang) and mixed into something that Should Not Exist In One Person.

Now this is what I’m talking about!

You can still tell he’s royal, since nothing can erase his royal upbringing (and I imagine Ozai was very strict on Zuko’s speech when he was younger, especially since he had a lisp that Ozai “rectified”), but now there’s a mismatch of slang from all over the globe in his vocabulary, from lower-class sailors to the Water Tribe to Ba Sing Se to the outdated Air Nomads. His accent is kind of all over the place, and he knows more curses than any royal rightfully should.

Surprisingly, it actually really helps him with diplomacy. He’s not a people person, but he’s honest and he can understand people, no matter where they come from. Fire Nation sailors? Earth Kingdom nobles? Water Tribe delegates? Zuko can talk to them all easily and use local slang that quickly wins him over. The nations might have been largely isolated for the past century, but Zuko hasn’t been.

have we had zuko adopted by the yu yan archers yet?

The kid is scruffy and underfed, needs a change for those bandages on his face and probably a doctor for whatever’s oozing underneath, and he almost managed to steal their dry rations. Not all of them, or even as much as a fever-weakened thirteen year old child carry. Just enough for a meal or two. How much do kids that age eat? Probably it should be more than that.

We are not keeping him, their squad commander signs. Or feeding every half-blooded war refugee we see. Take the food and kick him out. How did he get this close?

Didn’t hear him, someone signs.

Or see him, another adds.

There is a silence uninterrupted by hand-signaling, but very interrupted by the growling child still trying to work the arrows out of his sleeve so he can not be pinned to a tree. He could just rip the fabric and go. The shirt certainly looks like it’s seen worse. That might be the point, though: he probably doesn’t have another.

Just one meal? one of them wheedles. We could call it an interrogation.

No, the squad commander says, via pinching the bridge of her nose to ward off a headache. It’s not an official sign, but this does not stop it from being perfectly understandable.

“I can see you talking about me!” the kid growls. And hunches his shoulders when they turn to stare. He stops only when his shirt sleeve makes an ominous ripping noise. “I know you’re Yuyan and you have awesome secret hand signs and you’re the best archers there are and you’re talking about me. Are you going to shoot me or let me go?”

This is a baffling mix of very angry compliments that does not improve when he scowls and adds: “If you let me go I’m taking the food,” like that’s a choice he gets to make.

One meal, the squad commander conveys, with another elegant headache-pinch.

Two weeks later Usagi Squad returns to Pohuai Stronghold.

One week after that Commander Shinu performs a surprise barracks inspection. He’s expecting to find a lizard-dog puppy or whatever other pet the troops have snuck in this time and have been stealing extra rations for.

…A lizard-dog puppy would have at least been half-tamed. And would possibly snarl at him less.

He closes his eyes, because he doesn’t need to see their excuses. “He leaves in the morning.”

They do indeed put the child outside the gates in the morning.

He finds his way back inside in time for dinner.

As Prince Zuko had been declared deceased nearly year ago, Pohuai’s newest, smallest security consultant was never in any way linked to him.

Until the Avatar showed up, but that’s another story.

Fire nation has a nice policy on deserters or traitors. They announce it before the main land, soldiers and the colonies.

They do not have to anything to them because when these deserters or traitors go to water tribe or earth kingdom - they will kill or torture them.

Water tribe is obviously the cannibals along with freezing them or letting them drown.

Earth kingdom crushes hands and feet of firebender not even mentioning the regular crushing. (Dai li in ba sing se brainwash and control citizens)

Like some are false but then there comes in the real news of what they did. So the reason why there arent many fire nation traitors or deserters and if they even live long enough.

Imagine how water and earth feel that there are deserters and traitors of the fire nation that would most likely help but the rumors and what they actually did stop that.

Zuko not knowing the gaang's names, I raise you that he knows but is trying to detach himself from caring about them.

Know people's names and you get attached, you know them. So he does know them but he tried to shy away and just keep them at minimal contact.

Toph calls people nicknames based on them.

What if zuko who while traveling got to know his prey more (of course he doesnt know their names uncle, they are avatar, waterbender and water tribe) but he does call them things that he noticed based on their actions.

A Kidnapping

An AU where Lu Ten didn’t die at the Wall in Ba Sing Se and returned home with his father after secretly taking the city. Everyone thinks they’ve lost, when Iroh is controlling every aspect of the Dai Li.

At home, Fire Lord Azulon is still alive and kicking and Ursa is still home and Azula’s a little brat and Zuko is just… trying to keep it together.

Life goes on as normal, Iroh as the Crown Prince that never hits rock bottom, never travels to the spirit world to find enlightenment, and remains the same warmongering heir that he’s always been, setting the example for his son to follow in his footsteps.

At thirteen, Zuko begs to enter the war meeting. It goes very similarly in canon. Except since it’s Azulon’s meeting, he is the one disrespected.

He orders Ozai to face his son.

When Zuko is burned and sick with fever, Ursa begs Iroh to change his father’s mind about the banishment. Iroh uses his favor to ensure that his young nephew is allowed to stay at home, he is a child, he’s learned his lesson, he’s loyal to our nation he was only confused as to how best to keep Her good and strong.

Zuko goes quiet. Eventually it’s been years since anyone has heard his voice.

When there is news that the Avatar is alive, Azulon sends Zhao to capture him. Zhao takes Zuko’s place here since Zuko is in disgrace at home.

When Zhao dies in the North Pole, it’s Lu Ten and Azula who are sent to capture the Avatar. It becomes a competition between them. A future Fire Lord versus the second born of the second born, destined for mediocrity.

The thing is, we all know that our darling princess will never settle for anything but the best.

So now life is harder than ever for the gaang, running from two Fire Nation Royals, benders more powerful than any they have ever encountered (sans Toph, because come on). Azula is insane, her little girl group incomprehensibly terrifying. Lu Ten is calm, cool, charming and is actually really nice (a lot like Iroh was in the series, except more murder-y). He takes his father’s place in the scene where he talks with Toph, not knowing she was with the Avatar because she’s such a new addition to the group. He still talks about little cousin Zu Zu, about how sweet and kind-hearted he is and how he can be stubborn as a cat-mule when he wanted to be. How he feels guilty about not being able to save him from his family’s harsh ways and would sometimes dream about taking his Zu Zu - and his cousin Zula, even if she was so incredibly frustrating and cruel to everyone she interacts with - and just disappearing. How he loves his father, but after the things he’s seen in war… he wasn’t sure if he could agree with him anymore.

Azula fires at Sokka instead of Iroh.

Lu Ten disappears with her.

They move forward, Lu Ten and Azula have teamed up again at the outer wall. They fail, but not before that hilarious slipping scene when Aang gets smacked between Azula and the wall and Azula gets smushed between Aang and Lu Ten.

It’s a mess, honestly.

So now, it’s after Ba Sing Se and the gaang convenes at the Western Air Temple. It’s a few days in, they have people coming in and out going over plans for the Invasion, and they go exploring in the woods across the chasm.

There’s swooshing and crackling and everyone present has the sound of firebending carved into their brains in a way they’ll never forget. Everyone ducks and peers through the foliage.

There’s a boy who couldn’t be much older than Sokka all alone, practicing firebending. His hair is dark and shaggy and his skin is pale and his red Fire Nation garb matches the brutal scar encapsulating a good third of his face and drawing one eye into a permanent glare.

“How did he find us?” Sokka whispers.

(Spoiler: the boy hears him)

The firebender whips around defensively and the youngest of the Avatar’s group steps forward boldly. “Who are y-”

He lashes out.

Toph is yelling on the ground, clutching her feet, and Katara is already fighting, Sokka takes the little earthbender and runs, and Aang is trying to calm everyone down.

The boy doesn’t move like the firebenders they’ve faced before. He’s fluid, extending his fire like it were a part of him, almost dancing.

Aang is awed.

Katara is furious.

Eventually the boy wins and leaves the two of them puffing on the ground, unable to rise and fight.

He halts his final blow, staring.

The Avatar stares back.

It’s a strange connection that Aang can’t even begin to describe. Like he’s a total stranger and yet has known him for a thousand years. Familiar in a way he couldn’t place. Kindred spirits.

The boy disappears.

Back at camp, Aang thinks back to something Jeong Jeong told him.

“I cannot teach you the practice of fire. To me, it is a curse. A curse that only death can free me of. You, young Avatar, need a master who has seen the extent of fire’s evils. Who has personally suffered these hurts and injustices, yet breathes in the embers and roars his flames bright enough to encircle the earth a million and one times.”

They talk about the firebender that night.

“I’m telling you, it was an accident,” Toph groaned out for what felt like the hundredth time. “He was surprised. I got too close and I got burned. Literally.”

Aang snorted into his bowl.

Katara shot him a sharp look and shook her head in disgust. “He’s a firebender. They’re all the same. He probably wanted to try and scare us or something.”

Kill us,” Sokka snapped. “I don’t think it’s safe here. We need to move out before he comes back or sends reinforcements.”

“Aang?” Toph asked. “You haven’t said anything.”

All eyes turned to Aang. He looked up, only the sigh and set down his half finished food.

“I think that guy’s supposed to be my firebending teacher.”

That morning, Sparky Sparky Boom Man appears.

The boy saves them.

Before he can disappear again, Aang flies up to the cliff and follows him. When he finally catches up, the boy turned to him, angry and scowling worse than his burned eyes. “What?”

“Thank you,” Aang blurted. “For… you know, saving us.”

The boy grunted. “Sure. Whatever. Don’t follow me.”

Aang gaped at his back before running up and planting himself in front of the firebender. “No, wait! Please, just come meet my friends! I’m sure they want to thank you too!”

The boy stared at Aang blankly before picking him up under the arms and placing him down next to him. He continuing stomping walking away.

Aang groaned and ran back up to grab his arm. “PleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaassseeeeeEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!”

The boy gaped as Aang failed miserably to back the boy budge, pulling and pushing his chest and even jumping on his back at one point trying to fall backwards.

“What are- no don’t- what- stop!”

Aang jumped down and stared up pleadingly.

Please come have breakfast with us.”

The boy clenched his jaw glaring at the small boy before he let out a long suffering sigh, looking heavenward. “If I do this, will you leave me alone?”

Aang nodded vigorously, even if he did feel a little guilty since he knew that he would bother this guy nonstop until he agreed to teach him firebending.

Fine.”

Aang cheered, grabbing the boy’s arm and dragging him back to camp much too enthusiastically, laughing and blabbing and in general because

he just kidnapped his new firebending teacher.
