Audio Commentary, The Nigerian Job.

‘Now, one of my favorite acting stories…  where we shot Gina’s side first. And Gina’s line is “I always knew you had it in you” when he says that he’s working on the other side of the law now. But when I was working with Gina, I said to her the subtext of that line is “I always knew that you were in love with me.” So I said “This is the subtext.” And then we did the scene, and she really nailed the performance. When we turned around on Tim, his first take was good, but it wasn’t great. So I whispered into Gina’s ear, “Don’t say the line; say the subtext.” So off-camera she said “I always knew you were in love with me.”  There’s his reaction. And it’s so honest.”’

#literally one of my favorite moments in their entire relationship#he is so bashful and he looks at her so adoringly#he came and found her! he chose her!#the other three were picked for him–they were fate and chance but she was his choice she was the one he came and got#and he meets her in this alley and it’s such a role reversal such a new and tentative thing#he likes her SO MUCH he’s enthralled by her flair he’s enamored by everything she chooses to be–this femme fatale in the flesh but#so much better because she’s human and playful and motherly and nagging and–#sometimes I wonder how close he ever got#if–one of those late nights that sterling fell asleep at his desk–nate stared up at the sprawling corkboard of sophie’s criminal daring#and felt something like kinship#(did sophie leave little signs; little clues#knowing that only that one insurance cop with the tired eyes and the clever brain would pick up on them?#I bet she did)#and now he’s playing her side and he comes to her finds her and he’s so bashful and proud and this is something new#this is something good#she can feel it#he’s a little terrible but so is she#she smiles that crooked smile and she’s going to steal him she’s going to con him for herself#and he ducks his head like the Jesuit he used to be but also#he’s going to steal her back a little#honest in the crookedest way#(this is the only femme fatale/hardbitten detective dynamic I have time for sorry) (via notbecauseofvictories)
