Nintendo Dream #6 RtDL DX Interview Part 2

Here’s the translation-summary for the second half of the RtDL DX interview with Kumazaki and the team, continuing from last month!

...Sadly, it doesn’t come close to answering all our questions. (The True Arena remains a mystery... :sob:) And I get the feeling Kumazaki’s going to continue to be very staunch on not giving away any hot lore deets/timeline information. Ever. But I like that he continues to encourage speculation!

Anyway, read below for the whole thing!

So with the revelation that Magolor isn't an Ancient, there are two equally funny interpretations of how he (probably) chose his name

Either he was so incompetent in his cultural appropriation that he pulled a “14-year-old anime fan on Twitter” and smashed two cool-sounding words together to make a name and didn't think of the meaning and connotations

Or

He knew what his name meant but picked it anyways cause it would be a funny inside joke that nobody would know to translate

Cause like, admittedly cool name aside, who names himself False Paradise?

I'll be honest. I don't want to talk about "Cultural Appropriation Magolor" because arguing against it is going to sound like (to massively paraphrase DuskTarot elsewhere talking about the same idea) "I might forgive world domination but I draw the line at cultural appropriation!" That or wearing blinders for your bias.

...Nor do I want to play into it (haha, bad kitty does crimes!) because that's just giving ammo to people who don't like Magolor or just want to enrage Mago-stans for luls and dilutes the fact that we got some amazing character development out of him this game.

What do you think about the Master Crown having a mind of its own?

This is an incredibly well-timed ask, Anon, because I have just seen this fairly convincing theory bandied about on twitter...

...You know Magolor's crying during the True Arena? (Yes. Dess is back to talking about the True Arena. It never stopped messing with me, btw. Especially when stuff like this comes out.) So, anyway...

Since a number of people have been hearing "help..." "...no..." and "...stop..." someone posed the question: Doesn't Magolor tell you in the pause description that he WANTS to end this? He also sounds resolved and even has room to be a little sassy toward the end.

Isn't it weird he should say one thing (bravely/confidently, even if it's a false confidence) in the pause screen while crying pitifully for mercy in the battle itself?

...And then came the horrible theory...

Avatar

I haven't had the chance to do it yet, but do you know if the Japanese pause screens or text in RTTDDX contain any lore that, by chance, didn't appear in the english translations? I ask because I just remembered when Star Allies did the same thing with Void Termina's jp pause screen. (I wish I could relive that day, lol)

I'm sorry, Inifinite! I actually had this post ready to go a while ago but Tumblr kept borking on me and I eventually shelved it because I was so annoyed by it crashing mid-edit! Finally came back to it because this is a very good question!

-

So, I only looked at the ones I had screenshots of, but I want to start out by saying the Pause Screen translation here is without question more accurate than previous games. This is FL levels of accuracy - the only differences being very minor word choices. As such, I've gone ahead and stuck with the EN descriptions here and "added back" (via parenthesis) anything that could be said to have been "left out" from the Japanese!

Random, cause I've thinking about this off and on...

...could the Void/Nil-esque object in the background of the True Arena fight (I’d get a screencap but I’m having a lazy day...) be one of the many countless Voids said to exist? Is it in the process of being formed by this battle?

[Screenshot shamelessly grabbed from aWiibo on Youtube]

Can the crown itself not give birth to new Dark Matter (Magolor’s body being only a shell, even as “he” is locked away inside it) but the negative energy being formed from this fight (...Magolor’s weeping is a good sign this fight is producing a LOT of negative energy) enough to, well, give birth to one? Maybe Magolor could be transformed into a servant Dark Matter, like Blade, and what is going on in the background is the creation of a new “Zero?”

We see the sphere go from just an amorphous black void to gaining the Nil-esque stripes after you reach (read: divert to) the phase of the battle where everything has reached the speculated "bad end." (And remember how Dark Matter/Zero’s arrival was always the last thing to happen in the “bad ends” of the Dark Matter trilogy?) There's also the fact that it's dark blue, looking more like, say, Gooey’s colors than Void Termina's white/pink colors. (Colors associated with Kirby. Also note that Void Termina was able to be reborn/reformed) I wonder if that’s the case...

I’ve been thinking, since a lot of fans have said “what’s the point of having the last thing you unlock in the game be a “bad ending”? Isn’t that just cruel? But I’ve been thinking lately, what if it’s not solely a bad ending to make Kirby feel sad and torment Magolor, but a new ending to forge the way forward into a new arc? A sliiiight pivot away from the Ancients and the preparation for a real deep dive into the story of Dark Matter, Zero, and Void?

Avatar

Potentially dumb question for ya, if you don't mind, Dess. I can't remember which post it was but I saw you say that, in the crowned Mags fight, Kirby was aiming at the crown with the ultra sword, not Mags himself. Is that like... a headcanon or is that actually how it is? From my perspective it looked like Kirby was hitting Magolor pretty indiscriminately. Would be neat if that's just a detail I missed, gives Kirb more depth than people give him credit for if he understands the *crown* is the main issue.

Avatar

No, no, no! Not a dumb question at all! I think that might've been in one of my posts on the novel translation blog? Maybe?

To clarify (or maybe I was just so enthusiastic about it that I totally misrepresented the fight, in which case, I'm sorry) I mostly refer to the very last ultra cinematic strike of the Ultra Sword. The BIG ONE.

(Yeah, you're right that Kirby totally beats the stuffing out of him up till that point. No holds barred.)

But that one at least you can definitely see that the sword stops at the crown, and the crown is where the "hit" animation plays...

Hello Dess! Sorry to add more to your inbox, hehe.

There is a line that has always been my favorite in the original localization. From the 120 spheres dialogue in normal mode, Magolor says:

In fact, [the Lor Starcutter] can do almost anything, if the heart of its pilot is true.

In DX, it's slightly changed:

In fact, [the Lor Starcutter] can do almost anything, depending on the will of its pilot.

I think for the most part, they mean the same thing, but it's different enough to me though I can't really explain what xD Do you know if the wording is slightly different between OG and DX for the JP versions?

(I think a lot about the relationship between Magolor and the Lor Starcutter, so it's been one of my favorite lines. The change stuck out at me instantly xD)

Avatar

Not at all! I'm happy to help answer a question of yours! That said...

This line's in a bit of an awkward place, as you can only get it before completing Nutty Noon. I'll try to take note of it on my next run through the game, but for now, I can do some speculating...

Return to Dream Land DX Interview w/ the Staff

[Note: This was 8 pages long. I bought it the moment I could and wrote down/quickly summarized everything I could find that was of interest while reading through it. I didn’t even edit it or spellcheck it ^^ It’s not a full translation, there could be some bits I misinterpreted, and there’s some technical stuff about the development and staff that I left untouched, but this should be all the good stuff!]

Anonymous asked:

what do you think of magolor soul’s true arena desc? makes me think he isn’t truly sorry.

I wanted to save this ask to write something MUCH more comprehensive about this but, um, serious RL stuff (it's positive stuff, no worries. I'm just kinda anxious about it...) popped up during my break so since I'm going to need to duck away for a few days to cool down (and because I'm currently super mega obsessed with True Arena Magolor) I decided to hit this one quickly.

So, in brief, this game has an excellent translation. Forgotten Land quality. I'd say even a little bit above that, since Magolor's writing in the epilogue is so good. (Biased?)

But there is a slight shift of TONE in Magolor Soul's True Arena description, the 2nd phase, where he talks directly to Kirby. (Honestly, this is probably just an issue of spacing. Magolor talks a LOT and you can see this screen is packed with text. Amusingly, spacing was my guess for the loss of a few details from Magolor Soul's pause screen in the original game.)

(Photo nicked from willidleaway)

Here is a quick "alternate" translation from me:

"Kirby, frankly, I found you a pain to deal with. And the way you looked at me with that blank stare even after I betrayed you? It irks me that I keep having to rely on you but... I've had enough. Kirby of the Stars, hurry up and destroy this thing on my head. When you do, I'll come back and... heheheh...I'll tease you plenty!"
Avatar

I was lore surfing RTTDDX and found an interesting subject. Magolor's EX screen says he learned about the Master Crown in a "dusty tome" and thought it was a fairy tale. Now it makes me wonder of the subgame Tome tracker. What if those books in that subgame are his personal library (lore collection)? What if those tomes were written by the Ancients themselves?

Avatar

So, I've been thinking about this idea ever since I learned Magolor wasn't really Halcandran and it freed me to truly think of him as more of an "Interdimensional Traveler" ... and I think I have finally come around to my most current headcanon on this subject!

It involves the Spiders. That's right. This all goes back to "the portrait" in TDX!!

Magolor has a dream, right? A quiet, silly dream to build an amusement park that the entire universe could enjoy! But...well, he's also just a wee~ bit of a megalomaniacal egg, and even though he's WILLING to work toward his dream from the ground up, starting with a small, privately owned shop, we know that by the time of RtDL, he's definitely not against fantasizing about about things like cheating the system and becoming all powerful!

So, there's the our main character of this tale.

And what's the best and quickest way for an ambitious egg to get a big enterprise going? (Especially if he'd already tried things the hard way and failed?) Having FUNDING. So, Magolor reaches out to Queen Sectonia's empire, y'know, since the queen and her court magician can literally MAKE gigantic precious gems out of magic.

The Pause Screen lore of the Sphere Doomers EX really surprised me. If I understood it correctly, they're connected to Fecto Elfilis!? They look nothing alike!

What's your take?

Avatar

Got two different asks about this, so it's time to tackle the question of just what the Sphere Doomers are! (Hint: I have no answers, only curious speculation! But I think both of you are on the right track! ... If there IS a right track! This game sure shook up a lot of previously held Kirby fanon, huh?)

So, let's look at both versions of their, shall we say, "most interesting" Pause Screen Lore!

What’s the implication of the Marx soul mask does that mean. Marx soul canonically existed?? Did magolor meet marx soul??????? I’m going insane (this is like the fourth thing rtdl dx made canon what the hell)

So, when I first booted up RtDL DX and got the "Merry Magoland" intro, I remember being a little confused.

Another place? Another time?

I started a new game in Japanese and while the text is BASICALLY the same (no mistranslations or anything) the implication here was much more like "at some point in the future Magolor built a theme park for his friends."

Which basically sets Merry Magoland as post-Star Allies/post-Forgotten Land. I mean, we'll need to wait for the inevitable Nintendo Dream interview to see if I'm right, but...

When I first joined the fandom, I didn't realize this was as hot a take as it turns out to be but, <HOT TAKE WARNING> I've never subscribed to the "all post-game modes aren't canon" thing. I play along with it because a lot of the fandom does, and "maybe Galactca Knight will finally be canon" is a funny joke, but I think people have taken the commentary from Planet Robobot too far, using as evidence that nothing post game is "canon." I don't buy it. I think you're just hurting your own Kirby experience by taking that too seriously. Maybe it doesn't happen in a linear fashion, maybe it's an AU or an alternate story, but are these games showing us things that happened, in one form or another? Yes, I say! (And I'll have more to say about that when I talk about...other things...)

(Merry Magoland mask spoilers below. Nothing but vague spoilers regarding the game itself. ....I think...)

I was scrolling through your tumblr and you mentioned that there's subtle hints that Nightmare was responsible for the fall of Halcandra? I've never heard of that before, could you elaborate please?

Avatar

Huh. I thought more people would have been talking about that...!

We don't know if he's responsible responsible, but he definitely seems to be involved, and there's two main pieces of evidence that back it up.

One comes from Hyness's speech in Star Allies, where he mentions "...a nightmare of a galactic crisis..." his people were involved in. The word choice here is identical in Japanese, 悪夢(Nightmare) and 銀河(Galaxy/Galactic) and though Galacta and Nightmare are typically written in katakana (ナイトメアand ギャラクティクナイト) they have each been referred to by their associated kanji before. Most recently for Nightmare in one of the challenges of Merry Magoland.

...Of course, this is all contingent upon whether Hyness was even talking about the fall of Halcandra in that event! Stuff from the remake makes me wonder if it wasn't something different altogether. But now that Magolor is confirmed to be a COSPLAYER(1) I think we can say that Hyness probably IS legitimately from Halcandra.

Anyway, the other evidence comes Super Kirby Clash. While it takes place in an alternate dimension, it very much seems to "roleplaying" a fantasy JRPG version of Kirby pre-history. We've got the four legendary heroes, heart spears, Galacta when he was still considered a hero and not a destroyer, as well as, uh....

...Have you seen the STUFF from the Magolor Epilogue yet?

Do you think that the world where the tech ancients went is the real world?

Wait, real world as in... the world outside of video games? And...that's why we can watch livestreamed concerts with Neichel on Youtube?!

I never considered that. How utterly fascinating! Getting warm feels of the ending to <NON-KIRBY GAME; NAME REDACTED BECAUSE END GAME SPOILERS> thinking about that though.

Anonymous asked:

what did you think about the epilogue final boss?

Quiz time! (Honest answers only!)

Who had "make Dark Nebula/Dark Zero relevant again" on their remake bingo card?!

I find it hilarious that Squeak Squad gets derided as being the Kirby game with the weakest/worst story, or the least representative game of the Kirby franchise, and then out of nowhere, Forgotten Land is like "Oh yeah, Squeak Squad predicted non-Popstarian Earth-based animal aliens who can only speak in squeaks/meows" and now RtDL DX tells us that YES the tree-themed artifact that grants you limitless power and the water-themed last boss sealed away in a treasurechest that grants you ultimate power are at the very least related to each other.

...For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about...

It is THE SAME EYE. Yes, all dark-matter aligned creatures have a singular eye, but they're not all the same type of eye. These two in particular have identical eyes.

And of course, if you go back and look at Dark Nebula's sealed form, the gold is remarkably similar to the Tree Crown's gold filigree. Suddenly, there's a lot more sense behind King Dedede having a sealed "Master Crown" in a treasurechest in his castle!

I may have more thoughts on this later, but I pretty much just wanted to brag that Squeak Squad got more relevance!

Dess the prophet holy moly

Fr got hit with the Apollo prophecy dodgeball

Wait AM I a prophet...???

Dodgeball is when you try NOT to get hit, right? Because I think that's what happened here! XD

I threw a lot of wild mass guesses out there, but I can't remember if I actually got anything right. I got the last boss crazy wrong! But I'm not even disappointed?! (The remake is so good omg!)

Anyway, there'll be some asks going up today and tomorrow (both for the game and a few unrelated - but still kind of related - ones)

Note that I have AVOIDED reading anyone else's discussions about the game to keep my thoughts on this experience as much my own as possible. So if some of the stuff you see is stuff people have already figured out/jossed/etc, or I ignore something that everyone else is going crazy over (probably because I totally missed seeing it (1) in which case, poke me and I'll check it out) that's why!

[Continued Spoiler Talk + MariPav Spoilers]

I’m going so WILD because in my notes for my ongoing, totally non-canon fan comic, which I wrote a year and a half ago, I noted this very thing in regards to the Master Crown?? That it is a parasite and that it causes its wielder pain on purpose to unleash as much of the wearer’s magic as possible...
