Uh... I have been curious about this, but uh... Not sure if is appropriate to ask...? Eh...

Uhm... What inspire u... Or motivated u to create the lil guy that's doomed by the narrative?? I'm genuinely curious to know (・ัω・ั)

That's not a problem at all! ^w^

So, I got the initial concept for Noir because I was doing a lot of thinking about Magolor and the various Ancient Artifacts in Kirby and how they corrupt characters. (I still think about that alot...!)

Some people noted it looked a little like the Master Crown was trying to turn Magolor into Dark Matter, what with making him more round than his normal egg shape, and darker, and his mouth opening up into a Dark Matter-looking eye! So then I thought, what if the Dark Matter members we already know of (like Dark Matter Swordsman) weren't born as little one-eyed Dark Matter babies but were themselves regular people who got corrupted and had just been that way long enough to lose most traces of their original form! - Visually, Noir was inspired by a piece of unused art from DL2 that shows what a human version of DMS -might- have looked like. For me, that determined his species and overall look: human, with spiky hair, thick eyebrows, and a perpetual frown / troubled look.

Hey I sent an ask right when you announced that you were ending APOLOGIES early and it has a link to a thing that I thought would fit Noir perfectly

The ask in question has the phrase "I think you might wanna see this, chief" if that helps you find it

OMG...

Anon, I don't know what to say... ; _ ;

I DID see it and I DO remember it, but since I had no idea what it was for outside of an unmarked youtube link, I worried it might've been spam or a troll or even a masked virus link, so I deleted the ask...!

I didn't realize it was something related you sent...!

Would you happen to know any good kirby discord servers? I really want to meet other kirby fans but sadly when I tried joining one server it was pretty inactive.

Oh, Anon! I wish!

I was a member of (@)deafeninggardenerpanda's server for a little which was a nice place, though it's been a while since I was there and I don't know if it's still active since Panda seems to be somewhat on hiatus? (I remember feeling it was very MetaDede leaning too, fwiw.)

I can't say I've had a whole lot of fun at the r/Kirby discord as there's no safe place to talk about HC or fan theories there (or shipping...) and most every time I've tried to put an idea forward, it got argued down or mocked. (An experience I've heard is common... -_-)

I'm a member of the Kirby OC Tournament Discord currently, which is quite friendly but there's only one channel for Kirby canon talk and even then, it's mostly used in an AU capacity. If you're in love with Kirby OCs though (yours or others) it's a nice place! (Though I think co-host (@)moonverc3x has another server for Kirby OCs that is probably an even better place for that?)

Those are the only community focused ones I've tried.

...I've toyed with the idea of starting one myself that is keyed specifically to my tastes (canon character and games-heavy + with a focus on discussion, creative output, and support) but I'm afraid I just don't have the spoons to run one.

Heck, I'm still trying to get myself healthy and settled enough to officially open up that Kirby Tumblr-Community I made last month! (Who remembers that those things still exist? ^^;)

If you ever do find a good Discord, lemme know too! ^_-

Dess, you can’t just infect me with the urge to draw something for your latest Marxlor prompt, I’ve got so many assignments and other art ideas I need/want to finish D: (/lh)

Avatar

No, please! Join the Marxolor zombie horde...!! We have eggplant pasta and cat clocks! Also highly ego-centric theme parks and silly masks! And cheese cake blocks and exploding cupcakes and...!!

It IS a little bit like an infection though! I admit the Marxolor virus was laying dormant in me for a time but I love them too much for it to ever die! I want to write mahomaru (come to think of it, how many times HAVE I written Magolor as the "together one"(*) of the pairing?! It's usually Marx having to pull the hyper-obsessed and bad at self-care Magolor back from the edge...) and marumaho too!

(*) I say this knowing that I've got a short yandere piece in the works that would qualify as Magolor > Marx but Magolor is *definitely* not "together" in that one. (Neither is Marx tee hee... >w> )

Anyway, Dess is happy to produce more Marxolor but if my Marxolor inspires additional Marxlor then that in turn makes me happy!

-

Speaking of my Marxolor ficlet, you know what is awful?/pos

...I just realized it could be read as the prequel to THIS.

(Because this Marx would do anything to save his Mags from getting taken over further by the crown but the crown has already won that battle, at this point it's just an agonizingly slow crawl toward the end where nothing remains of Magolor but a body he refuses to release and a howling voice mourning the loss of his beloved ..)

I kinda wanna make a Kirby fangame solely so I can use my concept I had for a final Boss in a Kirby Game. The final boss is a Naked Singularity. I'm not sure how that would work yet, I just feel like a Naked Singularity would absolutely be something that would fit as a Kirby endboss.

Avatar

I'm not very science-inclined, so I had to look up what a Naked Singularity was but after watching a (not so) quick Youtube video, I totally agree with you that the concept of getting to/exposing the naked singularity of a black hole would be an amazing end-game concept totally in line with our recent Kirby last bosses!

All this talk makes me want to do more work on my own fan-game. Unfortunately, I'm about as programming-minded as I am science-inclined. Maybe if I put together a large enough chunk of a script + art resources/make a little showcase of what I'm going for, I can recruit some assistance?

Either way, best of luck with yours, Winter!

Avatar

So, have you heard the latest Juno Songs yet? It's... refulgent (I learned a new word, yay me!)!

Avatar

I had to watch the Full Package because I wasn't up to date on the Forgotten Land songs and it was worth it! Juno's skill just continues to increase! I thought they were great!

(Well, I ~appreciated~ Forgo's song, especially with the animal screams mixed in but it wasn't "easy listening.")

I also surprisingly enjoyed how Juno made use of the anime Dedede voice here, as well as showcasing differences in Dedede's mindset between the two forms/stages. And as a Leongar fan (and beast pack fan in general) I really appreciated him getting a good song too! Lastly, Steel was really good as Elfilis! Very haunting voice!

And you're right about new words! Juno really struck high on the fog index for this one! (As a lover of complex words myself, I enjoyed it!)

Avatar

I just realized Kirby Right Back At Ya's acronym (KRBAY) can be pronounced "Kirby". What the fuck. Is that why they named it that?

Avatar

Winter, there you are! (Sorry if I've let any communications go unanswered! Same goes for everyone else, btw!)

But yeah, that was something I first started to wonder when I joined Tumblr and saw it around. (It never struck me before - probably because I never looked too~ closely at the acronym.)

It makes sense because it's unlikely it would have come out that way as a coincidence BOY is it a stretch on their part to try something like that! Give a show a long, unwieldy title that barely makes sense in the context of the show (like, I guess his inhale abilities send stuff "right back at ya" but more in the games than anime) all so you could shorten it into an acronym that kinda sorta sounds like the show's original name?(1)

But... I guess that's 4kids for you! (Of course, I'm a former Yugioh fan so I'm used to their silliness.)

(1) My most gracious interpretation is that maybe there was a rights issue with just calling it "Kirby" because that conflicted with the games and so they HAD to give it a subtitle so someone on staff suggested a name that spelled out "Kirby" so it would be "Kirby Krbay" like... Mario Mario. I think I would have preferred something plain like "Kirby the Animated Series" myself! ^^;

Btw, if anyone more knowledgeable wants to chip in about this or 4kids stated reasons why, that would be welcome/appreciated!

The note Daroach leaves is pretty funny, considering Kirby canonically can't read! XD

All that truly matters to Daroach is that Kirby keep Marx's hat away from him for long enough to ruin the jester's day. And in that way, mission success!

Avatar

Meta Knight would be a hard knocks mentor, wouldn't he? Especially when Noir is someone a lot more sharp and aware than Kirby, who he already trains by sending waves of hostile knights at betweenchonor duels. He also has that darkness and pain in him that I sense Meta Knight knows all too well. Well enough that he sure doesn't get the (relative) kid gloves Kirby gets.

Avatar

Oh god, yes! If that's how Meta Knight trains Kirby - and this is mostly to keep Kirby ready in case of disaster and prepare them for their destiny (we assume...?) - then training Noir, an angst-ridden, self-destructive teen who is about five seconds from throwing himself off the nearest bridge on a good day, is definitely going to have Meta Knight use the "break you down and rebuild you from scratch" style of teaching. Which, frankly, Noir could probably use.

Noir in Pop Star almost gives me Christopher Robin energy, tbh. Him being so tall makes the setting feel even more like living toys.

Avatar

This made me boot up Star Allies for a quick height comparison of all the characters just to check (which I probably should have done long before now, so thank you for the push) (1) and...

...Yeah, the height difference is pretty crucial XD

Given his size in Swordsman-form, that probably makes Noir the only last boss (2) in the Kirby series to LOSE mass when you fight him XD

Well, clearly the paintbrush didn't curse Adeleine (Yet). But that monologue about Fecto Forgo and how all the artifacts are cursed, was it coming from the scientist or Noir?

The Fecto Forgo "we're all doomed, poisoned by the bitter yield of our hubris yadda yadda" monologue came from the scientist, yes! Though you could argue Fecty themself was conveying a chunk of that message. (At least that last bit written in FL-ese.)

Those four pages were pretty much all him doing the talking! (Albeit, it was happening over Noir's flashback, so I see the confusion.)

.

...This isn't negative talk on my part, but this does remind me that I have been doing my best to study how comics/manga do their thing for over a year and I'm still impressed by how even non-pros and doujinshi artists make their work so...so readable!

I feel like I'm always floundering, throwing spaghetti at the wall and praying things work out! "Should the text go here? Or there?" "What's a good panel layout?" "How do I convey this emotion using screen tone?" "Does this look like a sigh??" "Where do I put the speed lines?!" "Does this action need SFX attached to it?" "Is this expression creepy or sad?" "Did I break the 180 rule just now?!" "Is the BG in perspective? Oh god, it's definitely not!" And so on...

Which is a long way of saying "Thanks!" to everyone who has been enjoying reading my novice comics while I mess around trying to figure out how the medium even works! The positive response to today's post really invigorated me carry through with Apologies AU!

Avatar

Does Adeleine's paint brush have any side effect? Does it feed on desire too? Maybe it doesn't hurt her because her desires are not harmful ones?

Avatar

Fufu... Fufufu...

I WONDERED if anyone was going to ask that very pertinent question! Unfortunately, I can't say anything yet, as that is, in fact, exactly what Noir is on his way to find out...

It's interesting that you raise the concept of harmful desires in light of whether or not her artifact "hurts" her. This little factoid has not come up in the story yet but...

...Noir has killed before. Accidental and not accidental.

He gets violently ill each time it's happened. Noir acts like a junkyard dog, barking and snarling at anyone who comes near, but inside, he's an idealist and a dreamer. He'd rather be watching the stars than watching his back but...what can you do...?

And no, Adeleine has no idea. She thinks he has food allergies they haven't pinned down yet. ^^ The better someone is at protecting you, the harder it is to know the lengths they've gone to.

As much as I love redeemed friend Magolor, seeing him in a villain role is a devilish delight! Something about his calm yet confident demeanor really makes him intimidating!

Same, anon. Same.

I remember saying something like "…I miss all the sad art of Magolor that came out before 20th Anniversary Collection told us 'He lives!!' when everyone just felt sorry for the friendless wizard and his awful fate" and DX gave us a return to that with True Arena Magolor, and I was happy that I could cry and feel sorry for him again...

But now that it's much more obvious Magolor was wholly a victim of the Master Crown (maybe for longer than any of us realized) and that his dream was not galactic conquest born out of bitter desire to seek vengeance for his life but to start up a small business and work his way into building the galaxy's best theme park there's been a dirth of cackling evil villain Magolor and now I miss that! /lh

So funny story. I totally forgot that there was a samurai Kirby novel. So i dug for the plot and was fairly entertained. But then it hit me. With Samurai Kirby returning in rttdlx, and going back to the Clash games. What if there a "Samurai Kirby Clash" games where you apprehend criminals and vanquish demons and spirits (Oni, lol) and maybe a foreign alien from a parallel universe. And don't forget Shogun Magalor

Avatar

I would LOVE to see a little one-button action game "Clash" style expansion on this, like how Drum Dash and Blowout Blast got expanded into their own individual (mini) games!

We have no idea how long it will be until the next Kirby game, and I don't want HAL to rush their team! I want the next mainline title to be purposeful and full of care! Made because they want to and are ready! ...So some more eshop style mini-games like this would be a delightful way to pass the time between main games as well as keep the team in practice. Although that just reminds me of poor Vanpool's disbanding and us not knowing how that's going to affect Kirby development going forward...

...Err, anyway! Back to positives! Samurai Kirby would be a fun one to expand upon because in a dedicated game, you could go all in visually! Remember the cards in Card Swipe? They had a similar aesthetic to Samurai Kirby! And you could get to see even more characters and locales re-imagined as if from an old samurai movie/yokai legends!

There's probably lots of ways you can expand on the quick-draw mechanic to keep it simple yet fun on a gameplay front. Imagine if the dueling had a slight rhythm element to it, that way speed and reaction time was still important but it was less of a guessing game?

Avatar

To be fair, Magolor's riffed on his own world conquering too, and later makes masks of his Traitor form (but not his Soul one, interesting~) And they *do* both sail, one in the skies and one in the seas. I wonder if they've encountered each other before and bonded over their experiences. (Also, feel free to imagine Crowned Daroach and Dark Nebula Magolor, for if their respective heists reversed).

Avatar

Man, I have like, three different starters for scripts dealing with Magolor making masks for everyone EXCEPT Magolor Soul. In fact, here's a scrap of one! (W/ Meta Knight)

...Nothing's truly clicked as "the one" though. I do have another starter, this time using Apologies AU as a base that I may try to work with since there's a small hole in that story that needs patching.

Anyway, yes. Daroach + Magolor feel very underutilized as a duo. One thief, two thief. Red thief, blue thief and all that. (Comparison wise, I'm not normally one for visualizing Magolor as a cat or cat-like creature - despite HAL saying "ears" - but if you're into that, there's the "cat and mouse" thing too!)

Either way, I'd love to see (read: write) a fun (?) conversation between the two of them about their heists. The fact that I spent several hours conceptualizing a version of "Confrontation" from Jekyll and Hyde featuring Daroach and Dark Daroach means I clearly think the master thief wasn't unaffected by his experiences! (At least not when it's convenient to me. Fufufu...)

Unfortunately, my writer's brain is on mental hiatus atm so it might be a while before I get something going on there though.

Heellooo. Seeing "old" things I remembered THAT marxolor art based “ zombie by Deco*27 ” so uhhm. Do you plan to do a mini comic or an au in the future with that theme? I would really be interested in seeing it teehee 🤭

To be honest... I don't have any plans. ^^ It'd feel just a little weird expanding on lore for what boils down to an original song w/ no ties to Kirby (the "zombie virus is triggered by unrequited love" bit I added in later already made me feel self-conscious) but mainly, I don't know where I'd take it now that they're both zombies.

I guess there's "everyone else gets infected" but I dunno, I'm kinda tired of zombie apocalypse stories?? Feels like the "spark of hope"/survival in those is all a big tease because attrition is ALWAYS inevitable. (That and "humans are the real monsters" etc etc...)

But...if Marx and Magolor's infection did lead to an outbreak among the cast occurring, Taranza is 100% going to be the next to go.

(And then they become an idol group/j)
