You think Magolor and Susie would hire Adeleine for marketing and graphic design for their products?

I could see them both trying!

Adeleine, sweetie that she is, would probably be really shy about the offer at first, not sure she should accept, but also secretly SUPER EXCITED on the inside because, "Da-...ERR, King Dedede! Listen! I got my first 'professional' commission!"

Would it last past that? I dunno, lol...

I think both entrepreneurs would be incredibly happy with her demo piece for them! ...And then Susie, being Susie, would proceed to order a follow-up of 2,500 hand-drawn, personalized copies ("...Does two weeks sound like enough time? I'm on a schedule here. Oh, and if you can sign this ti~ny little non-compete clause!")

While Magolor would bug her for endless variations and changes until it's an entirely different piece of art; ad infinitum. ("Now, this is all still one commission, so I don't owe you anything extra, right?" "A-Actually..." "Wonderful! Pleasure doing business with you!"

(Note that despite writing them as commissioner horror stories here, I don't see either of them as awful people. They're just quirky, as all our beloved cast members are. And, in this specific instance, a little short-sighted. ^^ )

Cue a burnt-out Adeleine sitting in the grass with a thousand yard stare. That is until Kirby, Ribbon, and Gooey come by to play and help remind her that her art is best when it's both personal and fun!

Haha… Is it clear yet how desperately I would want to be on the writing staff of a Kirby ensemble cast animated series? XD (Comic works too!)

Addendum for the Wave 2 Fans:

Daroach and Dark Meta Knight (respectively) are the ones who show up to “correct” Susie and Magolor about their misuse of Adeleine’s good will.

Daroach gives Susie an eloquent and stirring speech (simultaneously a distraction so The Squeaks can make off with some hot tech in the background) while DMK just haunts Magolor like Poe’s The Raven (or, lol, Brandon Lee’s The Crow) until Magolor tearfully confesses his misdeeds and that he knew he was wrong…! He’ll do better! He promises!!

Anyway, they say having confidence in yourself is a good way to make friends, so unlike his main-verse counterpart, Mirror Noir gets along great with the other mirror residents! </biased perspective>

I'll draw him with Shadow Dedede later. Mirror Noir also LO~VES penguins!

I'm a subscriber to "the funniest reply gets to be canon" so...

Might as well tag @kirbyoctournament since this may be all (?) the propaganda I have for the boy this week. (Poor Noir, having to be represented by his obsessive and un-hinged alter-ego.)

hello! out of curiosity, do you have any headcanons/theories/etc. concerning how moonlight mansion’s secret laboratory area factors into the dmk connection? if you don’t mind my asking, i’d love to hear your thoughts if you have any :>

Avatar

Not...yet. Not a full one, anyway. I will say that the secret lab was in the back of my mind as I was writing my initial post.

Was tempted to say it belongs to someone else. King Dedede is always portrayed to be a secret gear-head but the tubes...

(Photos for those unaware of Moonlight Mansion's secret underground lab)

If... If Dark Meta Knight never had his own "Dark Halberd" and Moonlight Mansion was only his home base... Well, the Halberd is run on Wheelie technology (like the lab has Sparkies) and has similar trap/breakaway passages on it like the basement does...

Although if DMK didn't have his own Revenge of Meta Knight-style coup on Dream Land in the wings... what the HECK was he planning on doing with THIS stuff??! (All of a sudden, the idea of Susie and DMK bonding doesn't seem that strange after all...)

I've also thought a lot about DMK choosing Radish Ruins for the site of his second ambush. If it's a sign that he's got a barely concealed interest in ancient technology and old cultures as MK does...

(I was also thinking about how Moonlight Mansion is a hub to just two realms: Onion Ocean and Candy Constellation. Onion Ocean could relate to the sunken Halberd but I don't have anything relevant for Candy Constellation. It is one of the more tech-y of the realms so that could be where he got the equipment at least...)

If the Mirror enhances the negative, perhaps... MK's interest in the past was taken a bit too far in DMK? Perhaps he wasn't just content to observe it, he wanted to try and reproduce some of it?

...Then again, we're also talking about the guy who, when given a crayon and told he could draw whatever he wanted chose SWORD.

(I tease. Though him drawing a sword badly is still the funniest thing ever)

And, you know, perhaps he just needs a lab to keep the Halberd up and running? This baby is not gonna maintain itself!

Although, hot damn, that test tube is full of GREEN liquid isn't it...?

:Dess begins shaking violently:

EDIT: Last minute thoughts!! If he's got portraits of the realm bosses up, maybe he was...running experiments to try and connect the realms?? Or power the cellphone batteries...??!?

(Who DOES make those batteries? Maybe it IS DMK?!)

Silliness aside, while i was gathering images from Moonlight Mansion for that last post, I uh... realized something kinda BIG...

That towering manor, with the big "M" doorway? A symbol like that kinda reminds you of a certain airship.... ...But no! Surely that decorated "M" stands for "Moonlight!"

Oh, wait.... Oh no...

On the gate...is that......? IT IS!

IT'S DARK META KNIGHT! And all the BAT imagery everywhere too...! Ahhh! I can't believe I'm just now seeing this!?!

:cue "Damn, bitch, you live like this?":

But I will be taking those stained glass windows of the Guardians of the Mirror World as more evidence for my "Dark Meta Knight was a mole who truly cared about the Mirror World" theory though!

(And maybe the grave stone is for the Mirror Meta Knights, like when I theorized they'd all died and that's why DMK's such a loner...)

I feel a fanfic coming on...

Man, I want so much fanfic about Dark Meta Knight and his dilapidated gothic mansion in the woods, you have no idea! This discovery has all my wild DMK headcanons spinning so fast the rotisserie is starting to smoke and make frightening noises.

PS: I wonder if Meta Knight has his own slightly (but only slightly) less gothic mansion tucked away in the forests of Dream Land?

WHAT DO YOU MEAN DMK'S A MUTE MEATSUIT WHAT IN THE AMAZING MIRROR HAPPENED (In all seriousness the moment I read that it was like I got jumpscared but it's so cool at the same time)

Avatar

Oops. I think I wrote that wrong. I was trying so hard to trim all my summaries down I think I lost the vital part of that one.

It's SHADOW DEDEDE that is a meat suit.

DMK is mute, though, yes.

To explain (...in my weird little HCs obviously...) Dark Meta Knight and Shadow Dedede were actually lovers/in a relationship in the past. DMK was a bit bloodthirsty and fighty, but Shadow Dedede got a kick out of that wild side of him. However, because DMK was out doing the da~rk version of Meta Knight things (and because my Mirror Dream Land is like regular Dream Land but...uh, darker XD) Shadow Dedede was not saved from Dark Matter like regular Dedede was. Nor was he saved from any of his possessions...not in time.

Dark Meta Knight FAILED HIM. Irrevocably. Indelibly.

He had something good but his vices costed him. Shadow Dedede is now a puppet being piloted by a melange of dark forces. Most potently? Dark Mind in the form of the (non-parallel) King D-Mind.

In the pre-story to KatAM, Dark Meta Knight came back to challenge this invader for the body of his liege, but Dark Mind used their relationship against him and callously slit Dark Meta Knight's throat (and ground the resulting mirror shard into dust, ensuring he could not get his voice back) to shut up the ignoble knight up for good.

THAT is why all of DMK's acts in KatAM are circumspect. He cannot warn Shadow Kirby. He cannot train him now. He cannot ask his non-mirror counterpart for help. So he lures him and HIS disciple on a chase that ensures they will run headfirst into Dark Mind. (If he dies as collateral? Well, what more is there to lose...?)

...

And so yeah, that's my DMK backstory. He's a mess. ^^ And he's still a fight-y little bugger! Though now that the Dark Mind stuff is over, he's been forced to open up a little bit and make..... friends. Like that tall handsome rat fellow and that little artist girl who lets him use all her red crayons and doesn't judge.

The reason he attacked Dedede at the end of TDX? ...Jealousy, mostly. (And a warning to Meta Knight.)

Avatar

Springing off of @icedragonlizard 's post about there not being a Dark Meta Knight plushie yet and why he deserves one...

...Crazy conspiracy theory here, but sometimes I feel like HAL put Dark Meta Knight in Star Allies without really thinking about the massive effect that the inclusion of the cameo Dream Friends would have on the fandom and the perception of the cast as a whole!

Like, people have already commented on how certain profiles make it sound like certain friends would be more likely to side with the Jamba Cult or just want the Jamba Heart for themselves!

But the Kirby series being the Kirby series, this suggestion of questioning loyalty faded slowly as the fandom came to warmly greet all of the friends... :cough: Susie :cough: WARMLY GREET ALL OF THE FRIENDS as Kirby's tried and true companions!

This came full circle in Merry Magoland where the park's golden statues really imply that, from the point of view of Magolor (himself implied to have seen multiple different timelines) these people are all HEROES who helped Kirby and saved the day with him!

...But then, HAL and even the fandom seemingly couldn't figure out a way to explain Dark Meta Knight's change. Even Daroach, who is almost explicitly in Star Allies to steal the Jamba Heart, was a steadfast ally in Mass Attack. It's easy enough to spin him becoming a friend. But DMK never had that moment of ally-ship. (Neither did Marx, but his heavily implied friendship with bad-guy-turned-good-guy Magolor indicates that he can at least behave.)

A few people, myself included, have worked hard to try and discover and share about DMK's heroic (?) side that could potentially earn him a place in the Star Allies! (In my verse, he's explicitly a forever unsung, uncredited hero of KatAM, mostly due to him being a terse bloodknight.) but I'm not sure HAL has decided just what he is yet.

Heck, he has NEVER had a speaking line, I don't think?!?

I don't know if this absence of additional lore means that they're still figuring out how they want to characterize Dark Meta Knight going forward or if they're all in their office sweating right now going, "Oh god!! We accidentally canonized the biggest jerk in the Kirby series as a HERO because we wanted to save on programming costs by including a palette swap Meta Knight!! How do we fix this?!?"

...But the Kirby Twitter DID make that post about DMK's ranking and the Mirror last year when Magoland was going strong, so they haven't forgotten about him. Even if they're staying characteristically... silent ...about him for now! ^_-

And now, a bit of dark humor re: that Queen Sectonia ask:

Sectonia: Ah, what a beautiful day for the most beautiful beauty of all: me!

Dark Meta Knight (or the Dimension Mirror, idk): indeed, Your Majesty's countenance make the flowers, moon and stars hide in shame; none surpass you! except one

Sectonia: what was that last part?

DMK (or DM): ...none surpass you?

Sectonia: No, you said there was someone more beautiful than me! Who could have beauty superior to mine!?

♪five days later!♪

Some bee lady in the middle of nowhere: Wow! An invitation to meet the Queen at Castle Floralia! Things are sure looking up for me!

Avatar

Its well known that I loathe the "DMK is Sectonia's mirror on the wall" theory but...I will give you this one, as a bonus. >w<

Writing this has brought an additional question about this silly theory into my mind. Why does anyone think Sectonia, obsessed with beauty, would listen to anything from THE most unwashed character in the Kirby series? XD

Meta Knight loves to fight.

If there is one thing that he cannot go without, could never go without, then it is the rush of combat. The adrenaline that pours through him like a tidal wave, the fervour with which he swings his blade, it is everything; his crew, his Halberd, his duty and his homeland, in truth they all pale in importance next to the thrill of a relentless battle frenzy.

This is something that, even through shining glass, through beams of refracted light, through the crystal clear reflection of a gold-trimmed and glittering mirror, is left unfiltered. Dark Meta Knight loves to fight, because Meta Knight loves to fight. He knows this and he can accept this. It is sensible. A reflection must be accurate to the original visage, no? And if not in appearance, scarred and battered instead of immaculate and glowing, then at least in spirit there should be a perfect core that remains.

Dark Meta Knight likes to draw.

He sits in the sunlight, bathing in the warmth of his armour, surrounded by tentative allies sent for by the stars, and clutches a crayon in one fist. His dexterity is not quite as incredible with an implement of the arts as it is with an implement of violence. This does not matter, because when he scrawls across the paper, with too-tight grip and too-harsh force, the wonky lines he manages do not garner him any jeering. Instead, the fairy oohs and aahs over how passionately he's recreated his sword, and politely, the little artist advises him on how to put less strain on both himself and the crayon the next time he tries. Dark Meta Knight does not mind imperfections, really.

Meta Knight does not like to draw. He avoids picking up a pen or pencil whenever possible, and when he is forced to, he makes the experience quick. If Dark Meta Knight is so bold as to assume why, and he is, this is because Meta Knight is not good at drawing. Of course, neither is he. Not by a professional metric. Flawless swordsmen, but terrible illustrators. The reflection is accurate once again. However, Meta Knight cannot bear imperfections. He is always on a quest of improvement, and avoids that which he is not undefeated in. If his armour breaks, is marked, if he loses a chip off his pauldron or mask, he repairs it with the utmost haste.

Perhaps a reflection is similar, but not exact. Sometimes the mirror is smudged, or cracked. Sometimes it reflects backwards or sideways. Sometimes water will ripple across the clear lake. Dark Meta Knight can and has defeated Meta Knight. If he were truly a complete, perfect reflection, they would be too evenly matched for a victor. There are a million little other flaws. Meta Knight likes the idea of fairness, Dark Meta Knight doesn't bother with it. Meta Knight is perhaps slightly more upstanding than he, less inclined to villainy; though only slightly, Dark Meta Knight thinks, remembering through a cloudy lens how the Halberd once sank into the orange sea. In the end, the dark knight couldn't care much less. He is glad when the next time he sketches out the image of his weapon, the edges are a little more clean.

Meta Knight probably wishes for a true, unfiltered reflection, with no idiosyncrasies of its own. Dark Meta Knight doesn't see why he should seethe over minor details that get lost where the light misses crevices in the glass. Then again, he might just be spiteful because Dark Meta Knight trapped him in the shards of that very same mirror to see what it would be like on the other side of it. That would be a bit fairer, and Meta Knight likes to be fair.

But Meta Knight really, really loves to fight, more than anything else.

Dark Meta Knight puts the crayon down for now, nods when his fellows wave him goodbye, and turns to meet the yellow gaze burning holes into his back, brandishing his silver sword. Dark Meta Knight also really, really loves to fight, more than he likes to draw.

For the record, even if he won't go mad over it, Dark Meta Knight also still very much likes to win.

A-ahem. Starting over again...

@newthinkerer found THS post and said to me: "I'm sure the Kirby fandom has done something to grind your gears."

Which, in truth, the answer is not lately / not really no. ^^; But it wasn't hard to reach in and find some "comical outrage" style gear-grindy answers for those who find such rants entertaining! So, here those are for everyone's (hopeful) enjoyment

[Original Response Below] Ohhh? Did you want "Salty" Dess? XD Let's go down the list...!

Marx / Reduced to one single trait

Look, I know the games don't give people much to go on, but a lot of people (1) seem ha~ppy to come up with pages and pages of backstory for all the other characters - but Marx? Nope. Marx is the one character who people seem almost allergic to rounding out when he is RIPE with mystery and potential. "But the game doesn't tell us anything about him so maybe he isn't that big of a deal, Dess?" Tsk! The game tells us just as little about Meta Knight! The only difference is the number of appearances! Use your imagination, people!

i was trying to think of

  1. why SDDD and DMK would appear after Triple Deluxe events (i know noncanon side story mode whatever) if neither of them had anything to do with Taranza and Sectonia and
  2. what the deal is with DMK being "sealed [...] for aeons"

as a reminder of my headcanons:

  • the Dimension Mirror is a relic holding a pocket dimension originally made to seal Dark Mind who was an artificially created Zero (clone?) that got out of control. it is separate from whatever mirror(s) are used as portal(s) between Mirror World and Prime World
  • the Mirror was entrusted and passed down a long line of ancients -> royals eventually coming into possession of Mirror World Sectonia (Carmine)
  • long story short Dark Taranza married Carmine to get access to the Mirror for its supposed wish granting ability, shattered her to get her out of the way, then (inadvertently?) released Dark Mind and set off the events of Amazing Mirror

so, jumping off of that, my thoughts are

  • Dark Mind is defeated and while it was killed off for good it left behind some... evil... inside the mirror. evil residue. this is the influence that would eventually facilitate Sectonia's corruption
  • DMK was shattered inside the Mirror/pocket dimension, and I suppose became trapped in there, perhaps as a result of Dark Mind's death? (he became its new prisoner??)
  • up until at least post-Triple Deluxe DMK is trapped in the Mirror, meaning I guess he is not present for Mirror World Canvas Curse, Squeak Squad, Epic Yarn, Mass Attack, and Return to Dream Land, if those events did happen and if we go by order of release date. for the record Carmine also remains shattered and hidden somewhere until at least post-Triple Deluxe
  • aeons...? I'm gonna headcanon that while that IS an exaggeration (holy longer than you think dad batman!??!!), perhaps there is some time dilation going on that made DMK's imprisonment longer than it was outside the Mirror
  • a hundred (or whatever) years completely alone in an empty dark labyrinth saturated with the ghost of a dead evil fake god can't be good for your mental health. i would attack the first dude i saw as soon as i got out too. also, if he DID ever speak with Sectonia, he probably was not a good influence, due to all that
  • so... why SDDD then? well completely ignoring the fact that he appears from The Mirror at the start of his battle we can say that SDDD was there to take the fucking precious evil relic back because it's dangerous and stolen and DMK is in there. SK probably joined SDDD we just didn't see him don't worry about it

in conclusion: DMK just keeps Going Through It

You know, I knew you as the "Has lots of amazing Mirror World HC" without actually knowing what those were exactly (to my embarrassment...) and wow, wow, wowzers! These are AWESOME?!

Gah, there's so much here to absorb! I can tell you really put work into this! (Positive, btw. Very positive. As someone who has been trying - and failing- to piece together mirror world lore to answer asks and such for way too long, I have legit admiration for people who have figured this out to their satisfaction!)

I will be thinking about time dilation (or an inordinate amount of years passing that we just don't have any characters affected by time around to worry about) and Dark Mind as an artificial Zero and mirror verse-Canvas Curse and Squeak Squad and more for a while...

I also enjoy the idea of Shadow Kirby teaming up with Shadow Dedede too! I had some thoughts on them/the trio's dynamic in a "divorce arc" post I think I probably never actually ended up writing. (...I have my own DMK having a pretty serious/messy/blood-stained thing for Mirror Dedede, but that was very in the past.)

(Also, I love that Mirror Sectonia name. Reminds me pleasantly of EX Sectonia who has a frankly gorgeous design >w< )

Thoughts on Dark Meta Knight

A continuation of 'Thoughts on Shadow Kirby'. This is a long one!

TL;DR: I first talk about his relation to Taranza and Sectonia, then comes the fic I 'accidentally' wrote, then I talk about his (mirror) abilities and relation to Meta Knight (or rather, his inherited memories.)

Have you ever noticed how whenever people talk about the whole Dark Meta Knight/Dimension Mirror/Taranza/Corrupted Sectonia issue, it's always "Taranza must hate DMK so much!" and never "DMK must hate Taranza so much!" or even "Why did Joronia/Sectonia keep a magical mirror that clearly oozed bad vibes?" (Note: I'm neither saying Taranza is a poor uwu boy who did nothing wrong nor that he is evil incarnate. He didn't know DMK was in there nor that the mirror had lingering corruption. I am however saying he was a fool for stealing an important magical artifact! All three were hurt here.) I mean, come on. Sectonia is an individual with agency. You're telling me she just placidly accepted this whole situation and only gets to serve as an "Evil queen needs to die!" and "Woe is Taranza, his beloved is dead!" plot device? She could have been corrupted/replaced by her own reflection! Maybe she was as interested in studying DMK/this weird danger orb in 'her' mirror as he was in corrupting her.

So... I re-ally don’t love The Corruption Theory because it always seemed to make Sectonia more tragic victim than anything else and ruins her agency and turns Dark Meta Knight into a motivation-less monster who makes flowers wilt with his sheer badness. But THIS...!

This is the first version of that theory I’ve read that I like! A lot, even! A selfish, secretive Sectonia keeping her interesting “pet” that came out of her gift and - with her natural vanity/obsession toward being the best leader she can be - drives an already unstable DMK to pour out his misery over finding himself in yet ANOTHER form of enslavement into the dimensional mirror, creating a dangerous feedback loop so the pernicious effects they have on each other only grow until they are both at their worst! (Joronia becoming Sectonia and DMK becoming someone ready to killify the next person who appraoches the mirror.) Yessss! This is actually very cool!

Dark Meta and Shadow Kirby

It must be the contrast, I think.

I am quite average on "Metadad" content but completely FERAL for DarkMetaDad. I think, with MetaDad, I feel like making Meta Knight Kirby's protector/caretaker sidelines the fact that Kirby has always been shown to be capable of taking care of themselves. MK gives them some mid-adventure training in a couple of circumstances (and stands in their way as a foe in others) but the support has never really been given in a way that gives me any kind of parental figure vibes.

Kirby, as we know him, doesn't need Meta Knight for anything.

However, Shadow Kirby is portrayed as being mentally/emotionally weaker than regular Kirby. They spend most of KatAM hiding. Dark Meta Knight, meanwhile, is Meta Knight with the edge and aggressiveness cranked up. The concept that this violent, brooding, avenging bat knight has made it his mission to secretly defend the hero that SHOULD be defending everyone else? All while playing the villain so that Shadow Kirby's own reputation isn't besmirched? The fact that even Shadow Kirby can't say for sure but has seen just enough to still believe in Dark Meta Knight even after all this...

I love it. I love that Shadow Kirby comes out to confront you one last time, right before you face off with Dark Meta Knight in Radish Ruins. (Almost as if to say "...Wait! It's not him! He's not the one responsible!" threatening to undo DMK's clever sabotage(*) against Mind. But it's too late. There's no stopping what was set in motion.)

And after Dark Meta Knight is defeated a second time and shattered? It is only then, after losing his guardian, that Shadow Kirby is forced to grow up and assist you in fighting Dark Mind.

...By handing you, of all things, a sword.

Dark Meta Knight returns, of course (somehow) and it is after that that Shadow Kirby begins to take up the habit of going aggressive on regular Kirby, interrupting his fights and challenging him to duels. Gee, I wonder who he learned that behavior from? XD

[Last Minute DMK Sympathy Additions!!] Because I spent last night talking about this with Thecrashman
