I know I’m a heretic for saying this, but here goes. I think writing on mobile is *better* than writing on a desktop, specifically because I think the idea that “I can only write when I have my laptop/computer in front of me in this specific time and place” is a limiting belief that doesn’t reflect how creativity works. At least to me, creativity is a fleeting muse.
The idea is there, suddenly, from nothing, yearning to be written. If I constantly shut that voice down and say “I’ll write it later in this place and this time,” I am teaching that inner impulse to go dormant. That’s why I often forget that good idea and lose the momentum entirely. The story never gets written. The muse is gone.
The thing about writing on your phone is that it makes the act of writing extremely accessible at any time. I don’t need to feel like I have to cultivate a certain “space” for writing, which is a limiting belief by itself. Writing becomes something I can do anytime, anywhere. It also makes it fully acceptable to add a few sentences to a doc or start a new fic right in the moment, capturing the muse when it’s happening.

P.S. I used to be a laptop writer, then a hybrid, and now I am 100% mobile.
My husband has started referring to me responding to my AO3 comments as “responding to my fan mail,” and I couldn’t be more pleased about that.
