Hey, it’s mod merlin. Maybe I’m not looking in the right place, but I find a distinct lack of nonbinary positivity posts, so here goes

To all the stunning nonbinaries around the world, and off it, a love letter from yours truly

You’re amab? Fucking amazing, I personally love you, you’re cool and absolutely stunning

You’re afab? Bloody awesome, peak wonderful. I adore you, you’re clever and sneaky

You’re a nonbinary who uses a gendered label for your romantic or sexual orientation? That’s totally valid and there is nothing more fun then confusing cis people!

You’re a nonbinary who doesn’t use gendered labels? Cool! You do you, it’s amazing you’re rejecting the shackles of cis stuff!

You’re nonbinary but you don’t know what to label yourself as, or don’t care? Brilliant! That’s totally wicked thing to do, and I love that!

You’re Agender? I’m one too! Same hat. I personally think you look aboslutley stunning and perfect today, yesrterdya and all time.

You’re gender fluid? Guess what??? You exist! And that is an amazing accomplishment, and I love that! Never listen to what a cis person says to you about your own gender identity, they don’t get it.

I’m totally missing loads of things here, so please feel free to add more! I’d love if this became a chain thingy

Yours,

Merlin king

Nonbinary sapphics, you don't have to sacrifice either part of your identity to be accepted. You can be very proudly nonbinary and still sapphic, and vice versa! Nonbinary lesbians, nonbinary woman-aligned bisexuals, and people who aren't entirely sure are extremely important to our communities and completely valid, wlw can have a complicated relationship with gender and nonbinary people can use binary terminology! You know who you are, and you don't have to water down any part of your identity to be more palatable to anyone.

How to Write Non-binary Characters: a three part guide.

Disclaimer: While this guide is written by a non-binary person in collaboration with many other non-binary writers and readers, it does not necessarily cover the views of all people within the non-binary community.

PART ONE: the basics.

First off, what is this thing you call non-binary?

Non-binary genders are any gender identity that isn’t covered in the Western idea of woman (girl) and man (boy). This identity has nothing to do with which chromosomes or sexual organs a person has. Some non-binary people also identify as being trans (which is technically an umbrella term containing non-binary), while others only identify as being non-binary. Some commonly use the slang term enbie (which comes from the pronunciation of the initials for non-binary, aka N.B.) while others don’t. Some break down their gender further than simply non-binary, while others choose not to.

Some terms for common non-binary genders:

Agender: having no gender.

Bigender: having both binary genders, or aspects of two different genders, usually simultaneously. (Much like the bi in bisexual, non-binary people may also claim this term if they have any number of genders, especially if they can’t quite tell where one ends and the other begins, or they may claim the term pangender instead.)

Demi-(boy/girl/man/woman): being partially (but not wholly) binary.

Gender-fluid: transitioning between genders, which may include both binary and non-binary genders.

Gender-queer (or just queer): not of a binary gender. May be used when someone does not feel that any other terms fit them quite right, when they’re still trying to determine their gender and don’t yet wish to choose a term, or simply because the person finds it to fit them best.

There are also genders similar to what Western cultures call non-binary in many non-Western cultures, which are wonderfully diverse and all incerdibly valid, but as someone from an exclusively Western cultural heratage, I don’t feel I have the right or the knoweldge to talk about them.

So then, who are these non-binary people in real life?

The only thing that differentiates a non-binary person from a binary person is that they don’t identify as having a binary gender.

Their non-binary-ness could influence their lives in an infinite number of ways:

  • It could be subtle or life changing.
  • They could use fashion and vocal training and actions to present themselves in ways outside their society’s binary gender norms, or they could never even mention they’re non-binary to another living soul.
  • They could change their pronouns, or their name, or keep one or both the same.
  • They could spend years re-figuring out who they are and what it means to be non-binary or they could realize it once and never feel the need to dwell on it again.
  • They could identity as one of the numerous non-binary labels, or they could decide they’re just not binary and don’t care to dig further than that.
  • They could accept all gendered terms, or certain gendered terms, or no gendered terms at all.
  • People assuming they’re binary could frustrate them or sadden them or anger them, or they could not care in the slightest.
  • They may feel they exhibit (or wish to exhibit) many of the traits their society designates to a certain binary gender, or they many not.
  • They could feel the same way about their identity all the time, or differently every day.

Each non-binary person (and character) is unique, and their non-binary-ness is just one tiny part of who they are.

The basic do’s and don’ts for writing non-binary characters respectfully if you’re a binary person…

Please shere!!!

The trans clinics of Finland have decided to denide non-binary people from getting treatment.

Someone in the tags asked to make a transscript of this so it’s easier to read so I ended up doing so.

The new scheme By Trans clinics to screw non-binary folks out of care and sanity.

Comic by Kimmo Lust

Hi! I’ve got some news for you about the new policies of the finnish trans clinics.

I mean, we’re pretty much at the point where things are really fucked up.

To summarise, the situation at the moment is that if you’re non-binary you have to lie at the transclinic.

We should be crystal clear that absolutely no-one should ever have to lie to get the treatment they need.

Let’s go through some background.

Even though our culture would like us to believe, gender is not a black and white thing.

Between men and women (Both trans and cis) lies many shades of gray.

Trannswomen and -men are given diagnosis for transseaxuality, F64.0.

And for those who don’t belong to a binary gender are given F64.8, other specified gender dysphoria. That is, non-binary gender identity.

There are no binding rules for standardised treatment, but the trans clinics have written referrals to hormone replacement therapy and for some specific surgical treatments from 2008.

There are two trans clinics in Finland, HUS and TAYS.

Early 2018 we learned that HUS has stopped giving referrals to any treatments for those who have been diagnosed with F64.8.

Some people who are not so familiar with the situation might wonder why this is so important.

Well let me tell you:

Non-binary people can feel just as uncomfortable in their bodies, that is to say they feel dysphoria, just as bad as binary trans people.

The dysphoria of non-binary people is exactly as valid as binary trans people.

Non-binary people who suffered from dysphoria need access to healthcare just as bas as binary trans people.

The fact that non-binary people are denied access to the care they need means that they are extremely susceptible psychological effect like anxiety, depression and possibly lead people toward self-harm and alienation from society.

This puts non-binary people into a position where they are forced to lie to get the healtcare that they require.

And it should go without saying that nobody should be forced to lie so that they get life-saving healthcare.

TRASEK RY, the trans patient advocacy organisation has been in touch with the trans clinics and the national institute for healt and welfare.

(Their demands regarding the care of non-binary people are clear. TRASEK’s demands from their press release on 17.8)

The care should be individualised, based on the needs of the patient and the decisions about the care should be transparent and happen in conjuction with the person being treated.

Diagnostics and treatment shouldn’t be concentrated on the gender identity of the individual, but rather be dictated by the needs of the person being treated.

The desire to acces tgese treatments should be handled as a question or self-determination and the confirmation of ones identity, not as a psycho-pathological symptom.

The availability of resources should be ensured so the patiens aren’t subjected to unreasonable waiting periods.

There should be nothing unusual about any of this. We should not have to fight for such basic human rights in this millenium.

It is a massive embarrassment to the whole finnish healthcare system that we have taken such colossal steps backwards after all the work we’ve done to establish these rights to gender minorities.

There are no alternatives than to get this fixed as soon as possible. ”

Hope this helped for those who can’t read the comics.

No one ever tells enbies that they don’t have to choose between masculine, feminine and androgynous

No one ever tells enbies they don’t have to use “passing” terminology

No one ever tells us that we can look however we want

No one ever told me that I don’t have to be stuck in cis and binary ideas of what it’s like to be nonbinary and that I don’t have to use their words for myself

Respect the fact that not everyone wants binary ideas of presentation and passing forced on them

Respect the fact that replacing the male/female binary with the masc/fem/andro trinary doesn’t help anyone

If you are a British citizen you should totally sign this petition to legally recognise non-binary identities:

I’m not from the UK but it might be interesting for some of you folks ! - Mod Leo

This needs 100,000 signatures by July 17th.

Not in the UK but sharing for people who are!

Just signed this! Anyone else who can, please do so as well!

@thebibliosphere I know you’re not in the UK any longer, but I thought you might be interested in helping spread this (unless you’ve already reblogged in which case I haven’t seen your reblog yet so don’t mind me).

Not living there perhaps, but still very much a citizen, and wish my home country to be better than what it is <3

For yall in the UK!!!

Hey! Petitions can be great, but since the government is already considering this it’s kinda pointless in this case! It’s much more helpful for you to respond to the consultation on the Gender Recognition Act and tell the government ALL the changes they should make for trans people in the UK, including recognising non-binary identities!

Stonewall also have a quick run-down on that page on what the most important questions are and what answers best support trans people! if ur in the UK pls go fill this out (tagging @thebibliosphere again since u were so nice and reblogged it last time)

Thank you for that piece of information! Happy to boost again.

Sign it guys!
