Hey Reddit, I need some advice.

Some background: I (39M) run a business with my childhood best friend (39M), we’ll call him S. He does most of the more “theatrical” and “whimsical” aspects of the job, and I manage our finances, do paperwork, and other, related things that are more my pace.I also have a job selling pharmaceuticals, which is my main job. I consider the business I run with S more of a side hustle.

The problem I need help with is that I’m in love with S, who is completely straight as far as I know. He’s in love with this woman we work with sometimes (35F) we’ll call J. He’s been in love with J since they met, but I don’t know if she feels the same or not. Either way, he’s only expressed interest in women as far as I can tell.

I’d be happy for him if it were that simple, but he’s got this secret that no one knows but his dad and I. I can’t put it here for privacy reasons, but it’s big enough to ruin a relationship. He trusts me with it and not J so maybe he does like me? I don’t think he knows I like him. While he’s hyper-observant and a smart guy, he’s not the best at romance. Sometimes he tells people that he and I are a couple, but I’m not sure if that’s flirting or joking around.

I’m just not sure what to do here. Any advice?
