Beating heart overlay from here.
prompt fic for @aa-lionheart who asked: I was looking for someone who was looking for prompts It’s just that ever since I saw the Bridgerton, I have this scene in my head where Eddie and Buck confess their love in the rain.
I never watched Bridgerton, and this turned a bit more angst-y than planned, but I hope you like it, love. 💕
Also I want to thank my amazing beta @talespinner230 my fics partner in crime, I love you babe!!🤗💜

It’s those quiet moments (that bring us together) (can be found in ao3)
Buck was standing on the edge of the pier, unmindful of the rain coming down in what seemed to be a punishing pace, the rain blended and masked the tears coming down pale cheekbones.
They were there, originally, to save two kids that fell into the water. The kids, two boys, around 13yo tried to walk on the railing as part of a dare and both fell down.
The 118 were nearby and caught the call, Buck and Eddie went straight into the water, Buck quickly located the first kid, who managed to grab onto one of the pillars under the pier and was hanging on for dear life.
Buck swam with him to the point where his team set up a winch and a harness was lowered, waiting to pull the kid up to the safety of the pier and the paramedics.
Meanwhile Eddie was diving close by looking for the other kid, once Buck handed his charge off to his team, he joined his partner.
They looked for almost an hour, they looked as close to the pier’s pillars as they could without one of them getting hurt by the strong waves attempting to throw them against hard, unforgiving wood.
They looked while the skies turned dark, the waves grew stronger and the divers joined them.
They looked, until the rain started, and Bobby ordered them out, because it was too dangerous to be in the water while lightning raged out.
Heartbroken, and defeated they were pulled out of the water. Both were lifted up and onto the pier with harnesses, Hen and Chimney waited for them to land firmly top-side to drape a warm blanket around their shoulders and whisk them off for vitals and a general check up, to make sure there are no hidden wounds or the onset of hypothermia.
Hen finished checking Buck, trying all that time to get him to engage in some light conversation, anything to draw him out of that terrible, shattered state of mind he seemed to be in.
A quick look in Eddie’s direction uncovered Chimney having about as much luck as she was. She was brought out of her thoughts, when Buck shed the blanket and took off to the pier’s railing, looking out into the darkened horizon.
A movement to her left, alerted her that Eddie shed his own blanket, and is making his way to Buck’s side at the railing. At Bobby’s nod, she and Chimney started to pack things up, allowing Eddie and Buck some vestige of privacy.

Eddie came to stand close to Buck, his palm landing on the railing right next to Buck’s, pressing his entire left side to Buck’s right, offering comfort with his quiet presence and touch. Buck’s breath hitched, several times, until he managed to take a deep breath and even out into a steady rhythm.
All the while Eddie stood there, eyes forward, his own brown eyes bright, devastation clear on his face. When Buck finally turned to him, Eddie turned to meet his eyes, blue eyes red rimmed, tears mingled with the rain, as if the skies were crying with them.
Eddie then turned fully towards Buck, and with gentle palms framed his face and wiped the traces of tears from warm cheekbones with his thumbs. “We put it away,” he murmured softly, even as fresh tears made their way from sad brown eyes.
Buck then reached and brought their forehead together, “And we save the next one.” he murmured back, determined, like a promise. A few moments later Eddie turned to bestow a light peck to Buck’s right temple. “Come on, let’s get back to the station, we can try and face-time Christopher before his bed time.”
“Wait,” Buck stopped him from stepping away, not ready to part from their current warm proximity and the intimate bubble they created. Eddie tilted his head in question, his eyes radiating soft compassion.
“I love you, you know that?” Buck blurted, the veiled alarm in his eyes and the frown of his brows, told Eddie that this was definitely not what Buck intended to say.
The amused light in Eddie’s eyes, allayed Buck’s immediate fear that Eddie might be cross with him. That he would walk away from him.
Eddie chuckled, and stepped closer to his partner, “I did know that.” He replied, and brushed his nose with Buck’s, “I love you too, Buck.” He promised, and pressed his lips to Buck’s, who snaked a hand around Eddie’s waist, bringing him flush against his own tall frame, as he responded with alacrity.
So lost were they in each other, that they completely missed the flash of light that washed over them. “I’m glad, well glad is a relative term considering I have to pay Hen now for winning the bet, that you two finally got your act together, but it’s raining, I’m wet and will be completely unsympathetic to either of you catching your deaths, if we don’t get out of this wretched weather soon.”
The two turned to glare at Chimney, who was standing under an umbrella held by a grinning-like-a-hyena, Hen. Chimney on the other hand was completely unaffected, eyes firmly attached to his cellphone, furiously typing something into it. With an evil grin, he raised his head to look at Buck, “Maddie says call her as soon as possible so she can squee in your ear.”
“Is that really how she put it?” Buck asked with a skeptic eyebrow, as he and Eddie made their way towards their teammates.
“That’s how she meant it.” Chimney shrugged infuriatingly, making Hen chuckle and Buck and Eddie roll their eyes amusedly. “Congrats boys,” Hen offered happily handing them new dry blankets, “And thank you for choosing today to do this, beers on me and Karen once we talk you into a double date.”
“Seriously?” Eddie retorted.
“Hen never jokes about double dates.” Buck replied, playing along, recognizing the distraction for what it was, a way to cheer them up, help them shake the sadness of the day. “Thank you,” He whispered to Hen as she passed him on her way to the ambulance. She smiled and kissed his cheek before moving to join Chimney.
Bobby was waiting inside, and he turned with a kind smile, “I’m happy for you boys. Once you’re done with face-timing Christopher, come over to my office. HR forms have been waiting for you on my desk for the past two years now.” He grinned at the chorus of groans that came from the back of the firetruck. “Let’s go home.”
The End. ❤
So back at Christmas time, @fireladybuckley commissioned this for me from the incredibly talented @macarenaandrad3.
I thought right now might be the perfect time to share it with the world. 💗
Two things I keep thinking about,
1.
When he's holding the drawings, the heart that Buck drew, not the actual heart that Christopher drew, is the one that Eddie holds with his left hand.
On his left side, like the heart's actual anatomical space.
2.
In 5x15, there was the case with the guy with his heart on the right side.
This is a medic's job, but we see Buck helping Hen.
And he looks traumatized and worried, this shouldn't touch him, he should even find it fascinating, standing back with L and Bobby, but that's not what happened.
"His heart is on the wrong side."
This felt so connected to the buddie scene in 5x14, imo Buck didn't misunderstand the assignment, he's one of the smartest ppl in the 118, but I think he tried to get a smile out of Christopher and left it on the table, hoping it would have the same effect on Eddie.
And maybe say something heartfelt without actually saying it. 😉
And maybe Eddie heard it...?
This 👇 shows just how true this ☝️ assessment was 🧐
Buck spots TK talking to Lucy, his face is serious, he can imagine what's going on there, or maybe just assume it's about work, but he doesn't go over there.
He looks once, and that's it.
He stays with Eddie, by Eddie’s side.
He looks at Eddie with such aching fondness, and when Eddie points out that Bobby was lucky to get away with some nasty aches and bruises, Buck points out in return how a lot of ppl were lucky in that fire, looking directly at Eddie.
We didn't get to see Eddie and Bobby in the firetruck I the beginning, when they first make their way to dispatch,
We didn't see them express worry and we didn't get to see Buck running to Eddie as they arrive just as he exited the building with Terry.
Now one could make the argument that this was a fire and Buck had every confidence in Eddie's skills so he wasn't worried overly much.
And therefore didn't even question Eddie going back into the fire with him. Feeling relieved, secured and overjoyed to finally have his true partner by his side again.
And I think that's what I was missing, when I wrote this post.
But the gif up there, where Buck looks at Eddie with tangible relief, shows that he was indeed worried about Eddie and was happy to find him safe.
I wonder if that's the reason Buck didn't even argue Eddie going in with him into the fire and later didn't leave his side to try and maintain his train wreck of a relationship with TK - because he wasn't ready to let Eddie out of his side just yet.
And as it seems, Eddie wasn't ready to let Buck out of his sight either, because he comes to stand next to him as they bring in Claudette to the E.R.
You can see Buck on Eddie’s right fiddling with those suspenders.
Another thing in that gif up there ☝️, is Hen turning to check with Eddie, as if saying "This is weird, right?" - Another indication that the 118 is Eddie’s home, Hen still sees him as partner. (Chimney wasn't with them, and to her Eddie is the next best thing, he's the only replacement she accepted and trusted willingly enough, and still does even though he's not officially back on the team.) I thought it was a really sweet little added gem.
An added bonus was this:
TK is turning away from threatening L, and L doesn't look longingly at Buck, she turns to Buck and Eddie as a whole and look contemplative somewhat to me, I read an 'I'm not the threat woman, you're looking in the wrong place', kind of vibe from her.
She doesn't linger, Buck doesn't turn secretly to meet her eyes or look at her after TK leaves, he doesn't even go after his gf.
He stays firmly with Eddie, and I think L has this figured out already. She knows what kept Buck off balance and if the writers are smart they will use her bro vibe with Buck to kick-start buddie.
Manifest with me 😌🙏✨️

Buck tells Eddie he’s in love with him. Eddie pines.
or, five times eddie watches buck leave, and the one time he goes after him
Eddie finds him sitting on the back of one of the 133 ambulances, wrapped in a shock blanket. One of their paramedics is leaning over him, checking his pupils, holding an oxygen mask to his face. Eddie’s legs are carrying him over there before he’s made a decision about it.
“How’s he doing?” Eddie asks the paramedic—Ramirez, he thinks—without taking his eyes off Buck.
“Could be worse,” Ramirez replies. “Smoke inhalation, minor concussion. We’re gonna have to transport him just to be safe.”
Buck lifts the oxygen mask away. “Eddie, I’m fine.”
Ramirez raises his eyebrows at Eddie, shaking his head slightly, but packs up his kit and moves on to the next patient.
Eddie sits beside Buck, the nearness of him settling something inside him. “You really scared us, you know.”
It was as Eddie had stumbled out of the building with May and Bobby that he’d heard it over Bobby’s radio—may day, firefighter down. Two firefighters trapped under debris near fourth floor north window. Firefighter Buckley, come in. Firefighter Han, are you there?
Eddie’s heart had stopped, and he was already turning back toward the building when Bobby’s arm shot out, grasping him by the shoulder.
And a tense moment later: This is Firefighter Han—other Firefighter Han—with the 118. Got eyes on both of them.
“He’s got them, Eddie,” Bobby said. “Chimney’s got them.”
And he had. With Ravi’s help, Chimney had managed to get Buck and Albert out. Eddie hadn’t been able to stop himself from crashing into Buck as they emerged from the smoke, wrapping him up tight in his arms like he’d never let go. He had, eventually, but only because Buck still needed to get checked out.
But now Eddie’s sitting next to Buck, both of them whole and alive, the call center still smoldering across the way.
“Albert okay?” Buck asks, lifting the oxygen mask away again.
“He’s good,” Eddie answers. “Chimney’s good. May and Bobby are good, too. We all made it out.”
Buck closes his eyes, swallows. “For a minute there, I wasn’t sure I would.”
Eddie’s chest clenches. He doesn’t want to think about that. Doesn’t want to go back to those heart-stopping moments when he wasn’t sure he’d ever see Buck again.
Buck is looking down at his own hands, fidgeting with the oxygen mask. Something’s on his mind—Eddie can always tell.
It doesn’t take long. “Eddie,” Buck says. “I need to tell you something.”
That one’s Those two are mine.
