Sláinte (A Drunken Cherik Drabble)
It hadn’t been meant to be creepy, his tailing one Professor Charles Xavier to what appeared to be a local pub populated mostly by university students.
Erik clutched his copy of Xavier’s novel (apparently his Senior Thesis he’d decided to publish on his own) tighter to his chest as he pushed through the heavy wooden door. Xavier was younger than he was and already one of the brightest minds of their generation according to every article. He just wanted a moment of his time to discuss the book he’d read cover to cover at least three times–
Loud karaoke nearly burst his eardrums as Erik pushed directly into a throng of people. Some irresponsibly drunk young gentleman was currently screaming into a microphone a song fairly unfamiliar to him but seemingly the anthem of most of the patrons as they sang along and stumbled against one another to celebrate a year well ended.
And there was Charles Xavier standing on one of the wobbling tables like he owned the entire room, red in the face and screaming along with all the rest.
Fuck you I’m drunk. Fuck you I’m drunk, pour my beer down the sink I’ve got more in the trunk!
Between the time Erik had watched him leaving the university and the man he saw before him Charles had not only lost his coat and blazer but his tie and seemingly his top shirt button.
Some call it a tavern but I call it home! Fuck you I’m drunk…
Even with rosy cheeks and glazed eyes, Charles was the brightest thing in the room. His laughter seemed lighter, his presence was… well for lack of a better word, magnetic. So even as Erik realized the man was in absolutely no state to have a comprehensive conversation about the future of mutant-kind, and as he should have realized nothing less than that Charles was very much no more than a college boy with a brighter mind and thicker wallet than he perhaps deserved, Erik edged his way just a little closer.
AND I’M GONNA BE DRUNK TILL THE NEXT TIME IM DRUNK.
Charles stepped down from the table, to the chair before him and onto the floor, spilling his pint nearly the entire way and most certainly staining his white shirt, before struggling to stay stable across the chipped wood floor.
As he stumbled backwards for his balance, Erik’s hand shot out of it’s own accord to steady his elbow. In a moment of pure clarity, Charles’s eyes looked deep into Erik’s own and for some strange reason, his heart painfully skipped and began racing to catch up with itself.
“Thank you, my friend. I daresay you’ve saved my life. Can I buy you a drink?”
Erik’s mouth, dry and thick as cement, refused to form words. So he simply nodded.
“Excellent. “ Charles’s smile was bright and easy and pure sunshine before he ducked away to the bar returning with two glasses. “ Sláinte, Erik Lehnsherr. I’m glad you liked my book. It seems… we have a lot in common. You and I.”
Erik cleared his throat and tore his eyes away from the other’s for a moment of thought. “I suppose we have a lot to talk about.” He managed.
“After you. Your hotel is closer than my apartment.”
This is so cute...! And also very well written - it feels like I'm right there like a fly on the wall. Excellent.
