Moulin Rouge Review- August 15, 2018
Before the show starts, certain ensemble members come out and serve the audience some fierceness. It was pretty cool. And the set is very glitzy and in your face.
Aaron Tveit came out. I died. It’s as simple as that. They open up with Lady Marmalade.
Rhythm of the Night was so fun because that song is just a jam. And watching Aaron jam out makes me happy.
Aaron singing Shut Up and Dance makes me happy because I love Walk the Moon and I love musicals. And Raise Your Glass is such a jam as well.
Satine sings a slowed down version of Firework by Katy Perry and it was phenomenal. Karen Olivo is a such a queen can belt to the heavens. It was one of the best numbers of the show.
The Elephant Love Medley was pretty brilliant. My favorites included: Take On Me, Don’t Speak, Torn, Everlasting Love and Heroes.
ACT 2
The dancing in Bad Romance was fierce. Did I mention how fierce the ensemble is yet?
Come What May was amazing. I just love that song, it has so much passion and love in it. And Aaron singing it…I’m sold.
Shake It Out was really empowering. I already love this song and think it has such a great message that has moved me in hard times. It’s sung by the girls that work with Satine, who all had fabulous voices and it really showed their bond and how they would move on together despite their situation and what may happen to the Moulin Rouge.
Roxanne is the best number in the whole show. Aaron’s voice went to places I didn’t think was possible. He was just so angry and commanding. He’s at the front of the stage and walks to the left, while Satine is in the back and walks to the right, but they walk in perfect unison. I can’t say enough good things about it. It was mind blowing.
Next came Crazy and Rolling in the Deep which was my second favorite number of the show. Aaron and Karen are the best part of the show. Aaron sings Crazy and they both sing Rolling in the Deep. Their voices are so powerful when they came together.
As Satine dies she sings Your Song back to Christian. This was powerful because it’s like the first thing Christian says to Satine when they met. And since Christian thinks Satine doesn’t love him anymore since she goes with the Duke, this song proves her loyalty and love to him before she dies. Before this, Satine rejects Christian very harshly in front of the Duke, but breaks down into tears as soon as Christian leaves proving yet again her love for him.
The finale was beautiful as Christian reprises Come What May. They also reiterate the themes of the show: truth, beauty, freedom, and love. As he finishes the last note, the Moulin Rouge girls come back and do the snaps at the beginning of Lady Marmalade and then BLACKOUT. It was a fantastic way to close out the show.
After the bows, they do perform more which honestly I could do without because I loved the ending. Even though, this is technically not part of the show.
Personally, I thought Act 2 was wayyy better than Act one. I thought it held more depth and emotion. I can’t wait to see what they do in the Broadway production! It shall be interesting…
