Worth A Million

mid-movie Trainspotting fic below the cut, ~1,650 words, unrequited pining

(I know the Trainspotting fandom on Tumblr is like two and a half people but fuck it; T2 convinced me that Spud had a thing for Tommy all along, and now I’m taking both and a half of you down with me)

note: this thing demanded that I write it in the style of Irvine Welsh; I am not Scottish and I am Very Sorry™

You’re meaning to tell me you’re not Scottish and you wrote this in Scots dialect? Absolutely gobsmacked, it’s near enough spot on! You should be proud because this is great and so impressive.

Okay, I just want you to know that a bitch (me) cried a little—like, instant, legit face leaking—the second I saw this. I don’t believe I’ve EVER gotten such a lovely, out-of-the-blue compliment on a Deep Cut like this. You have made my entire freaking week. Thank you, thank you, THANK you! SO much. 💐💐💐

Listen up if you use tagged pages on your blog!

Hello,

From Dec 1, 2021, we’ll be changing how tags in URLs are parsed, making searching for tags with special characters or multiple words more precise. You can choose to opt in ahead of time via a toggle over at tumblr.com/customize. Read on for more info.

What’s this about? We’re telling you about a new setting you can toggle on the web at tumblr.com/customize, to support spaces, hyphens, plus signs, and underscores in tags. After Dec 1, this change will be enabled on all blogs, but you’ll still be able to opt out using the same toggle.

Who will be affected by this change? Anyone who has:

  • Bookmarked /tagged or /search pages;
  • /tagged or /search page links in a post, a blog’s theme or description, or somewhere outside of Tumblr.

What do you need to do? If that’s you, click here or head to tumblr.com/customize and toggle the “Use better tagged and search URL decoding.”

You’ll need to update any hard-coded URLs to /tagged and /search pages that you added manually to those URLs. However, you won’t need to make any updates to the tags on your posts.

Questions? Read the original announcement on changes, read the Help Center article here, let us know what you think over on @wip, or reach out to Support with any queries.

friendly reminder that moments like sitting in the sun, waking up well-rested, discovering a song that makes you feel your heart and laughing with someone will find you again. clouds will dissipate and the sun will sink and rise and the moon will be full and bright outside of your window, and life will stop feeling this heavy. in the meantime, we’ll try. sometimes that’ll feel like enough and sometimes it won’t, but that’s okay. you’re here and that’s an achievement and that’s good and it matters.

Do you think its okay for some fic writers to just write exclusive one shots if thats what theyre generally good with? Or do you think they can benefit from some venturing into multichapter even if its its intimidating? Do you have any tips for combating this? Thank you, Kat!

My dude, fanfic is for fun. If you want to write one-shots, write one-shots. If you feel confident writing longer things, write longer things. Literally just do what makes you happy. It’s not a competition. It doesn’t have to be about hitting some nebulous goal of making yourself a better writer. Write the things that you want, in the way that makes your brain happy.

Honest to god if you only want to write fic in the form of blackout poetry or only want to write drabbles of precisely one hundred words or you spend the next six years erratically updating a WIP that winds up being a million words of a pairing no one else cares about: it’s your time and your brain and your fannish interest! Do what you want, no one can tell you otherwise.

Please watch this movie, guys,

It’s directed beautifully, they subtly show feminism without exclusively bad mouthing men, and without hesitating they show the issue of how girls are viewed in India. I can safely say that the level of misogyny is in a lot of Asian countries, households and community, it really hits close to home.

They even mentioned the reality of underage marriage and why it’s a problem.

Believe me, it’s an empowering movie and whoever stands with women’s rights will understand what I mean.

since the movie wasn’t mentioned i took the liberty of looking for it! It looks amazing and is the second highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office (x)

It’s called Dangal and you can watch the trailer here

I have watched it and another tidbit is that it is actually based on a true story! Geeta and Babita Phogat won medals for their country in the Commonwealth Games and they come from a state in India (Haryana) that is generally known to be not that progressive.

This is Geeta:

This is Babita

and this is their father, Mahavir Singh Phogat,

The story is inspiring, amazing and every single one of you should watch it by hook or by crook.

This was one of the best movies I’ve seen in years! I’d highly recommend watching it legitimately if you are able.

10/10 would recommend this. Sure it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but this was a really good movie for me personally.

There was an arrest across the street from my place in Oakland one day – three cop cars with a bullhorn and guns out – and before I could even get out the gate there were a couple people posted up and one of them was filming and another one was narrating in a calm but very loud voice, just

“HE IS COOPERATING! HIS HANDS ARE EMPTY! HE IS DOING WHAT HE IS TOLD TO DO! HE IS HOLDING STILL! HIS HANDS ARE EMPTY! HE IS NOT BEING THREATENING! HE HAS PUT HIS HANDS BEHIND HIS HEAD AS ASKED! HE IS NOT RESISTING!”

and that was something I hadn’t thought to do before. It certainly let the cops know what the narrative of eye witnesses was going to be.

I especially liked “his hands are empty” because this statement would still be true and a witnessed reason the police should not become violent even if it turned out he had a weapon on his person somewhere.

I see people in NYC stop and record a lot. Even if they are just being nosey, that’s still witnesses if shit goes down.

We must be vigilant.  The New Solidarity.  You might just save a fellow human being.

If you don’t feel comfortable with doing the narrating thing (which really is quite clever), even just standing around and blatantly staring actually legit helps immensely.

There are studies that show that even an image of someone looking can be effective to change people’s behaviours.

Sidenote: If you see a cop stopping an Indigenous person, the same protocol applies.

note-a-bear

Honestly, do this every time you see the cops stop someone.

yeah I’m not trying to pull an all lives matter here, clearly black and indigenous people face the greatest risk of police violence and the highest chances of being murdered. but disabled people, mentally ill people, drug users, trans/GNC people, homeless people, and sex workers of all races are also at increased risk of police violence, and I’m sure I’m forgetting someone. cops target a LOT of marginalized/vulnerable people, is the point, and you can’t assume a stop is going to end well.

how to properly write an indian character (racebent or not):

  • INDIA IS DIVERSE. what this should mean to you is that the culture in one state may be very different from the culture in a neighboring state. there are always similarities, but the differences are VERY important.
  • FOOD. like i said, india is very diverse. the food’s going to be made differently, and the popular foods will vary from state to state and even from town to town, village to village. there’s like 347454578 types of biryani, and not all parts of india like to use a lot of spice or a lot of oil. it all depends, and you need to do your research before you decide what your muse’s favorite indian dish. (the indian restraunts you see in western countries are usually,,, not all that accurate. we don’t eat butter chicken and naans everyday, but god i know some of us wish we did).
  • LANGUAGE. again, india is very diverse and it has a lot of languages. one of the main problems is that because of how many languages each part of india speaks, it’s hard to connect the country’s people as a whole. that means not everyone speaks hindi. in most cases, a person will speak the common language found in their particular area, and that’ll be their mother tongue. this is especially true in the more southern areas. this means you need to know where your muse’s hometown is or where their parents’ hometown is, or whatever the case may be. (let me clarify: most ppl that went through indian schooling will learn the common language in the area, hindi, and english. but if you’re a first immigrant like myself, sometimes you’ll only focus on one main language rather than two. like i know telugu, but not hindi. it all depends, but make a conscious decision when thinking about this).
  • RELIGION. not all indians are hindu and muslim. buddhism and jainism have a great following there, and it’s important to choose wisely here. of course, i cannot speak accurately about the latter three religions, but if you choose to have your muse be hindu, please understand that there are sects within hinduism. not everyone practices the same thing. not everyone celebrates the same holidays. do your research.
  • SOUTH INDIANS VS. NORTH INDIANS. this is VERY, VERY, VERY important topic. south indians and north indians can trace their ancestry to two different groups, so we have very different physical features. the most apparent one is our skin tones. south indians are generally darker. we generally celebrate holidays a little differently, but that can also be due to that person’s religion and their specific sect. marriages are different, foods are made differently. you need to look into the specifics for each particular state.
  • DO NOT USE LIGHT SKIN INDIAN AESTHETICS FOR SOUTH INDIANS. it is VERY disrespectful, especially taking into account how colorism is very overbearing in india and desi communities. yes there are light skin south indians and dark skin north indians, but please don’t act like you can use light skin aesthetics for a dark skinned indian. the whole problem is that we’re pressured into lightening our skin, and if we don’t, then we’re not desirable/beautiful. it’s takes a toll on all of us, so if you’re not indian, please be wary with the way you go about this. (of course there are exceptions like maybe you see a light skin indian model wearing a traditional outfit that you feel like your muse would wear, then that’s fine! bc the main focus is the clothing, not the model themselves).
  • DO NOT USE A NORTH INDIAN FACECLAIM FOR YOUR SOUTH INDIAN MUSE. and vice versa. it’s more problematic if you use a north indian fc for your south indian muse because south indians are seen as lower than north indians. the Ideal Indian is what people usually attribute to north indians, (we’re all told to be more like the north indians) so you’re completely supporting the erasure (when you think of india, you usually picture north indian cultures, south indians are grossly underrepresented in western media) and hate of south indians when you choose a north indian fc over a south indian fc for your south indian character.
  • ESTRANGED FROM THEIR CULTURE. if your muse is more estranged from indian culture, then you need to explain why and what aspects they are separated from. desi communities in western countries will be different from indians actually living in india (as with most immigrant vs native communities). take some time to find some first hand accounts from indians living in the same country your muse is. it’s okay for your muse to be estranged from their culture, it happens to many people of color, not just indians. you just have to take into account how that can affect their confidence in their own heritage and things like that.
  • CASTE SYSTEM. yes, i understand that it’s literally illegal for discrimination to occur based on caste, but it still happens. it’s like how discrimination based on race still happens in western countries even though it’s usually illegal in that country. frankly, not many young indians take caste into account when they make their friends (but realize that there’s still a lot of discrimination within schools, workplaces, and social areas). the caste system still holds strong when it comes to arranged marriages, but more and more young people are choosing to have inter-caste marriages, something the older generations are wary of.
  • STEREOTYPES. if you are not indian then it is not your place to reclaim any stereotypes. so stay away from customer service jobs and convenience store owners. of course, if your muse is smart, that’s not necessarily something that always negatively impacts indians, but be careful with the way you word certain things.

it’s very obvious when someone doesn’t do their research, so please, take your time. use multiple sources. take notes. don’t just look on wikipedia for fifteen minutes and say that’s all the info you need. india has many cultures, and many of them overlap. it’s up to you to do the research and understand how all of this affects your muse. (also, this isn’t a comprehensive list, so take that into account when you’re researching).

god I really wish people would stop treating the content they consume as like, some kind of diet where you can only read and watch things that are organic and free-range and chemical-free. diets aren't real because you made them about movies. you can read things that are objectively bad and still come out of it okay because your brain isn't a 1:1 what-goes-in-comes-out deal! you're capable of being discerning and enjoying things that you don't fully endorse.

We’re all having “hard conversations” about racism, police brutality, and #BlackLivesMatter I hope.

You’ve probably noticed that detractors often use the same “racist talking points” in response. Here’s a researched and sourced guide to help you answer, for the times you may get stuck.

Feel free to save these images and share them!

people treat enjoying a piece of problematic media the same way christians treat sinning and it's like. you don't have to tamper your enjoyment with constant guilt! just acknowledge it's imperfect! i struggled with this a lot and at the end of the day if you know better than what the piece of media teaches or says, it's fine to consume it. we can all be conscious of flaws in media without the performative type of protestant "fall to your knees and beg" guilt that is so prevalent online. i don't need to go on an apology tour for what i find interesting and neither do you. acknowledge where the media gets it wrong and go back to enjoying it. if you limit yourself to only "pure and good" media you fall into the sandtrap of constantly having to shift what you love to appease fucking internet avatars. it's fine to watch a fucking movie and it does not mean you fully endorse its message. we are not soaked in the blood of sin for enjoying a piece of music or a play or a book that has some bad elements. fucking hell

HOW TO DONATE TO BLM WHEN YOU HAVE NO MONEY

a black woman named zoe amira posted a video on youtube. this video is an hour long and filled with art and music from black creators. it has a ton of ads, and in result will rack up a ton of revenue. 100% of the ad revenue from the video will be dispersed between various blm organizations, including bail-out funds for protesters. it will be split between the following, dependent on necessity

  1. brooklyn bail fund
  2. minnesota freedom fund
  3. atlanta action network
  4. columbus freedom fund
  5. louisville community bail fund
  6. chicago bond
  7. black visions collective
  8. richmond community bail fund
  9. the bail project inc
  10. nw com bail fund
  11. philadelphia bail fund
  12. the korchhinski-parquet family gofundme
  13. george floyd’s family gofundme
  14. blacklivesmatter.com
  15. reclaim the block
  16. aclu

turn off your adblocker and do not skip ads. between each time watch 3-5 other videos (mix it up) before restarting. this will ensure you aren’t marked as spam by youtube. mute the tab if you need to focus elsewhere but don’t mute the video itself. and let. it. play.

youtube will donate to blm for you.

please, please reblog. for people who don’t have money to spare, this is incredibly important information to have.
