From Myths and Hymns, a song cycle based on Greek myth and lyrics found in an antique hymnal, “Hero and Leander” is based on the myth of the same name: Hero was a priestess to Aphrodite and in love with a young man named Leander, who lived on the opposite side of the Hellespont strait. Every night Leander would swim across to be with her, and Hero would light a lamp at the top of her tower to guide his way. Succumbing to Leander’s soft words and to his argument that Aphrodite, as the goddess of love, would scorn the worship of a virgin, Hero allowed him to make love to her. These trysts lasted through the warm summer, but one stormy winter night, the waves tossed Leander in the sea and the breezes blew out Hero’s light. Leander lost his way and was drowned.

Could you be my Hero, a heart afire? My lighthouse on the shoreline, could you be that to me?

a collection of songs covered by aaron tveit with him not changing the pronouns

aka a collection of Aaron singing female power ballads

  • Popular from Wicked; Aaron as Galinda— “Now that I’ve chosen to become a pal, a sister, and adviser”
  • Back to Before from Ragtime; Aaron as Mother — “I was your wife”
  • Fly Fly Away from Catch Me If You Can; Aaron as Brenda — “He was just a lonely little boy to me / with his sweet and gentle touch he sure unlocked my soul”
  • We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together — “So anyway, like, the other day he calls me up, right? He’s like ‘I still love you’”

and some songs he’s covered that do not involve any pronouns but were originally sung by women:

bonus:

“To Make You Feel My Love” was actually written by Bob Dylan, and Aaron mentions it as being Garth Brooks (who covered it) on the album. But the rest of these are seriously the lord’s work, holy shit.

One song glory, one song before I go Glory, one song to leave behind Find one song, one last refrain Glory, from the pretty boy front man Who wasted opportunity One song, he had the world at his feet Glory, in the eyes of a young girl A young girl, find glory Beyond the cheap colored lights One song, before the sun sets Glory, on another empty life Time flies, time dies Glory, one blaze of glory One blaze of glory, glory
