there's enemies-to-lovers where the characters are enemies kind of by accidental default, based on circumstance or reputation, and so if they can calm down and have an actual conversation the 'rivalry' will be swiftly resolved because it wasn't really a thing to begin with.

and there's enemies-to-lovers where the characters are fundamentally in opposition, and if they did sit down with a cup of tea for a chat things would not improve and might just get worse, because they have conflicting views on important things that neither of them is willing to budge on.

both have their appeal, but if you're looking for one and get the other (either way round) then it can be disappointing.

One of my FAVOURITE ship dynamics to write or read in fics is when two characters are basically already a couple but they just haven't realised it yet. They call each other up at like 3am, they cuddle, they sleep in the same bed, they fall asleep in each other's arms, they hold hands, they practically live together, they talk about having a ~ special connection ~, they just haven't actually kissed or done the do or talked about their feelings yet so they're still both like "but I just don't know if they like me in that way!!"

My opinion of Twelve x Clara I think is basically that she was *definitely* in love with him, probably in a romantic sense. She WANTED that old man. The way she surged forward and kissed him on the cheek in the Christmas special felt way too much like she was working herself up to kiss him and just went for the safer route (I love that moment sm, they’re obsessed with each other I love it). The Doctor absolutely loves Clara, and we saw how far he would go for her. That’s the whole point of their time coming to an end. But (and this is just my feeling on it, I think headcanons where he also loves her romantically are totally valid and I love you guys for it) I personally don’t see him as being in love with her in the romantic/sexual capacity? They’re definitely a couple of freaks who are obsessed with each other and he wants to hold her between his hearts and keep her there forever. I think that part of this is also just because I believe that, from a little before he married River to the end of their marriage (and ofc he continues to love her afterward!) he loved her, and was pretty much dedicated to only being with her. I don’t see him having feelings for anyone else, and I think that during his marriage to River, she was the only person he was with, thought of himself with, etc. But I feel like so much of canon absolutely points to Clara having feels that are…well, how do I put this?

Feeling like posting the hot take that more people would ship/be inclined to see romantic undertones with the Doctor and Donna, but Catherine Tate and David Tennant are the same age and she doesn’t look twenty. (NO HATE to those who don’t ship it!!! Or who never would! This is more about the fact that Donna isn’t fifteen years younger than he is so I think some of that plays into it.)
