Dean is also the series narrative heart from day one and throughout. The series stops and starts as Dean comes in and out of frame. Dean's entrance begins the story. His death pauses the story between seasons 3 and 4 and seasons 7 and 8 and then between the end of SPN and the start of The Winchesters. Supernatural does not exist without Dean's voice. It ends when Dean is absent, or it pauses until Dean returns.

Sam even does things, without Dean, between seasons 5 and 6 when Dean is not dead. But we don’t follow him as the audience. We get to see what’s going on again only as Dean steps back into frame.

Crucially, between those two seasons, Sam has no soul. We return when Dean steps back into frame because Dean is the narrative heart—the one who cares.

This is also why the SPN writers don't like when Dean is not Dean—why Demon Dean and Michael Dean can't last long. The story doesn't know how to sustain itself without its heart.

“You’re you, kid,” says Dean, quietly. There’s a hint of a smile in his voice. “First ever successful case of de-wolfing.” The smile, stretching onto his face. “You’re gonna be famous.”

The relief hits Claire with a force that staggers her, rolling through her body with its warmth. She cracks a tiny smile of her own. “Cool,” she whispers.

Then, unaccountably, she feels her face crumpling, and her eyes welling with tears.

“Claire?” Dean is at her side instantly, crouching next to the couch. “Are you okay?”

He sounds so concerned. She doesn’t understand why that makes her cry harder.
