“I told you,” Dean whispers. “I told you not to. I begged you not to, I-” He stops when Cas’s eyes open, blood pouring out of his mouth, gaze cloudy and unfocused. He swallows around blood and coughs. Dean feels it dripping warm down his hand. “Cas…Cas what did you do?”

“I stopped it,” he murmurs, closing his eyes again. Castiel can feel Dean, but not really. His body is numb and his fingers are cold. He chances a look around and remembers the graveyard, how beautiful it was before he closed his eyes and let Raphael’s blade slide through him. Crowley had been leaning against the statue of an angel, eyes bright with laughter and mirth. “It’s over now.”

“You didn’t have to end it this way, Cas. You didn’t-”

“I started this, Dean. It was always up to me to finish it.”

“You can’t really think that. Cas, you can’t-” But he coughs again and so Dean pulls him closer. “Raphael’s gone. There’s no end anymore. There’s no more war to fight, nothing to else, okay? No more. There’s no more. You’re gonna be fine and…and we’re gonna put this behind us. It’s what we do. We forgive, okay? We forgive and we move on and it’s not different for you. It’s not different, Cas. You’re gonna be okay.”

“Dean, you need to leave me here.”

“Cas, no.”

“I’m slipping. Dean, it’s over. It’s finished. I-”

“You are not leaving me. Not again. Not like this, not until I say so.”

“No one has a say but God, now.” And it’s things like that that Dean can’t argue with. Because he felt Him. He felt Him when Raphael was banished and when the ground opened up and all the souls from Purgatory rushed inside. He felt Him when clouds parted and the moon shone through.

But he doesn’t feel Him now. Not with Cas bleeding in his arms and slipping away faster than Dean can collect him again.

“I’m sorry.”

“Cas, it’s not-”

“I’m sorry it ended this way. I’m sorry I didn’t…I didn’t ask. Ask for your help.”

“Next time. You’ll ask next time.”

“Dean…”

“It’s alright. It’s gonna be okay. It’s gonna be just fine, you just hang in there.” They’re quiet for a while, nothing but Cas’s ragged breathing cutting the silence of the night. He coughs once before breaking the quiet one last time.

“You are the reason I ever wondered why.”

Dean closes his eyes against the flash of grace. His heart hammers in his chest because, things like this - they aren’t supposed to be real. Cas isn’t supposed to be real. Dean should hang so much of his hope in the arms of angels, but he does. He has for so long and he doesn’t know if he can take it all back now. Not after this. He opens his eyes only to find his arms cradling nothing but Jimmy’s broken body, and he prays that the man’s soul left this world a long time ago, before he could see what everyone had become.

“You take care of him,” Dean says, looking up at the stars. “Understand me? Don’t you let him down again. Don’t you leave him again. You hold on because when I get up there and I find out you fucked up? I’m comin’ after you next. And the lost thing you want on your trail is the Winchester brothers. I can promise you that.”
