Momo | I can't hear & I make games.

Hey Momo, I just did my first comp and placed in low plat for Overwatch which I'm really surprised with since I can't really communicate with my team due to my deafness. This came as a shock since I was fully expecting to place in silver or something lower really. How much do you think good team communication contribute to your rank? And how do you communicate with your team? With friends, I usually use the auto team commands and use "I need healing!" when I'm being attacked by a flanker, etc.

Hi there! In a game like Overwatch, where placing runs on a bell curve, you can get to diamond with decent aim and basic commands. Communication is important though when advanced strategy (beyond “using our ults at the same time”) is necessary to win ranked games. This is where voice comms come in. For me, I use a system with my friends to express communication in various competitive video games, but for ranked that is not always an option. Avoid mentioning your hearing, as it makes people rage (yay, ableism); instead just continue typing and people will eventually use that instead. If people give you a hard time for not joining voice comms, just say you can’t at the moment.

I think there is nothing stopping you from climbing higher! You got this :)
