The Parental Board Of Secrecy

  • TW: CHILD DEATH / TERMINAL ILLNESS
  • Given that Zelda was never a particularly reliable or stable parent - let alone partner - Fitzgerald’s daughter practically grew up in and around the Guild.
  • Scotty was born when her parents were both 18. She was unplanned, and it was a lot of chaos.
  • Fitzgerald wasn’t particularly high up in the Guild when Scotty was born, but his close relationship with Melville meant that she pretty much had free access.
  • In those days, the Guild functioned as a glorified country club, and Scotty was something of a tiny, blond mascot.
  • Anyone who spent time around Scotty was sworn into the Parental Board Of Secrecy - an entirely fictional committee founded by Fitzgerald as a means to get out of Scotty’s frequent badgering about upcoming surprises and gifts.
  • Board members were sworn to lifelong secrecy with regards to all parental matters, under pain of death. Blah blah blah.
  • Melville, of course, insisted that he was kicked out of the Committee years ago and delighted in spoiling whatever surprises he could.
  • Babysitters ranged depending on the day and the activity, but Mitchell was always a favorite once she joined the Guild. Given her touchy pride, Fitzgerald usually bribed her into tagging along on business trips by calling them ‘joint vacations’ and using Scotty’s fondness for her as leverage.
  • His daughter was Fitzgerald’s shadow, and even when she was an infant it was rare to see them separated. As soon as Scotty could walk, she was following at his heels wherever he went.
  • It was a common topic of conversation that Scotty was identical to Fitzgerald, both in appearance and demeanor. She was loud and bombastic, and thrived on being the center of attention.
  • She was born with a laundry list of health problems. Rather than having nurses around all the time, FItzgerald learned how to attend to Scotty’s various needs.
  • Scotty never showed any outward signs of an ability, however, that she survived as long as she did suggested to some that she had a latent ability similar to her father’s.
  • Zelda had a great deal of affection for Scotty but found parenting difficult with her fragile mental health. Most things fell on Fitzgerald, which caused some tension down the line when Scotty had an obvious favorite between her parents.
  • To balance this, Fitzgerald went out of his way to find hobbies that Zeld and Scotty enjoyed that he wanted nothing to do with, like painting and piano.
  • Scotty’s death was not a surprise. It was long and it was slow. Fitzgerald dealt with the lion’s share of the practicalities behind it, as well as caring for Scotty while Zelda pretended nothing was happening.
  • Having grown up with a mother who had a healing ability, Fitzgerald didn’t realize how rare they were until he was trying to find one for his child.
  • Scotty’s death resonated throughout the Guild powerfully, and was largely why so many members stayed on board, despite Fitzgerald’s leadership being questionable at best.
  • He didn’t take any time off after things happened. In fact, he was at the Guild more than he ever had been before and very rarely left.
  • For the most part, he left Zelda in the hands of a team of nurses and doctors at home, and mainly limited his contact to phone calls.
