"I don’t need marriage. I don’t need anyone to take care of all my needs and desires. I can take care of them myself now." Mindy Kaling for Good Housekeeping, Feb 2015
“I always get asked, ‘Where do you get your confidence?’ I think people are well meaning, but it’s pretty insulting. Because what it means to me is, ‘You, Mindy Kaling, have all the trappings of a very marginalized person. You’re not skinny, you’re not white, you’re a woman. Why on earth would you feel like you’re worth anything?’”
Coming soon to #themindyproject, Danny Castellano in San Francisco.
This spring her second book, Why Not Me?, is due out. The title is a mantra she says when she’s going after something she wants, the three little words that motivated her to push for her own show, even when another network initially didn’t bite. “I thought, I have the ammunition, the education… What’s keeping me from actually doing this? Only that I was scared of failing," she says. "I think that’s what keeps a lot of women from doing things.”
Girls face so many challenges and people are constantly telling them they can’t do things, they can’t be funny, they can’t run the companies. My advice is just not to focus on anyone telling you that you can’t do anything or the politics of your situation. Just think about your art, or that thing you want to do.
“I love clothing so much; it almost scares me sometimes. Whoever said, ‘Anyone can wear a dress, it’s how you dress during the day that matters’—I really believe that.”
Mindy Kaling for Instyle magazine, October 2014
On the weirdest thing a journalist has said to her: “‘You’re ugly and fat, and that is so refreshing to us.’ I’m like, ‘What are you saying to me, sir?’ “Well, we’re used to skinny people, and you’re so ugly and refreshing.’ That’s not a question, sir.”
[on the worst comments she got from journalists] “You’re ugly and fat, and that is so refreshing to us.” I’m like “What are you saying to me, Sir?” “Well, we’re used to skinny people and you’re so ugly and refreshing.” That’s not a question, sir.
From rude fans who call them fat and the horror of 'pasties' to their industry crushes, nothing is off-limits for this year's top contenders in comedy. - Taylor Schilling, Zooey Deschanel, Kaley Cuoco, Edie Falco, Mindy Kaling and Emmy Rossum as The Funny Honeys for The Hollywood Reporter.
Actresses that I absolutely adore - I always get asked, ‘Where do you get your confidence?’ I think people are well meaning, but it’s pretty insulting. Because what it means to me is, ‘You, Mindy Kaling, have all the trappings of a very marginalized person. You’re not skinny, you’re not white, you’re a woman. Why on earth would you feel like you’re worth anything?
“I’m the kind of person who would rather get my hopes up really high and watch them get dashed to pieces than wisely keep my expectations at bay and hope they are exceeded. This quality has made me a needy and theatrical friend, but has given me a spectacularly dramatic emotional life.”
"I’m not married, I frequently use my debit card to buy things that cost less than three dollars, and my bedroom is so untidy it looks like vandals ransacked the Anthropologie sale section. I’m kind of a mess."
