sechzigstraße // köln nippes

the two neon signs in nippes are both in very good condition and in fragments. there is an appeal to both forms of appearance, but hopefully there is a future for the second.

living and dying in salzburg

that was the first thing that came to mind when i held my pictures in my hands. i was lucky enough to be able to stay with the barmherzigen brüdern in the centre of the old town and to be there out of season. this allowed me to experience the city in a different way than i would have as a mere tourist during the days i spent there and with the salzburgers.

somewhat hidden on höninger weg in cologne, the wilhelm hammes marmorwerk, now naturstein hammes, was located until 1990. a beautifully designed selection of products still adorns the façade of the front building to this day.

roman foundation walls, a former monastery, high-rise buildings from the sixties, revitalised in the 21st century. this is where cologne's architectural history comes together in the smallest of spaces.

haus saaleck // cologne old city

even aliens are impressed by the gothic architecture of the building and the view of the cathedral opposite. thanks to their flying skills, they can also escape the crowds of tourists

oberdollendorf // siebengebirge

in autumn, there is nothing more relaxing than a trip to the gates of cologne and the vineyards of the siebengebirge. here you can discover the history and stories of wine and, of course, stop off for a delicious meal of fresh federweisser wine.

for me, the railway bridge over maybachstrasse is always a rich and inspiring source in terms of different lighting situations. i hope that it will be preserved with its columns and clinker walls for a long time to come and not fall victim to redevelopment as a boring concrete monolith.

I

industrial cultural heritage embedded in a desert of emptiness. the klöckner-humboldt-deutz complex continues to lie abandoned and unused, decaying away. an awakening from its slumber is uncertain. so many uses for the benefit of all would be feasible, but people prefer to sacrifice to filthy lucre.

königsbrücker straße // dresden neustadt

for me, firewalls full of graffiti are part and parcel of urban centres. even if the walls are now disappearing under insulation or, as here, will soon be obstructed, because more and more gaps are disappearing that were torn by past eras.  every picture is also always a document against disappearance.

landscape // siebengebirge

the siebengebirge is an ancient cultural area, but also a natural area. actually, not a single spot is untouched, as centuries of cultivation and mining have changed many things forever. the quarries have all been abandoned by now, but so have monasteries and castles. the places are now overgrown again and offer new habitats. threatened traditional cultural landscapes are managed and preserved by initiatives, associations and individuals. this is a very important task, especially nowadays. from the various summits, there are always new views of the different landscapes as far as the rhineland and the eifel.

stenzelberg // siebengebirge

history and nature experience are combined in many places in the siebengebirge, including the stenzelberg. the former quarry where latite was mined is now a beautiful nature reserve. from the 11th century until 1931, it supplied many of the surrounding historical buildings with material. these include the bonn minster, the heisterbach monastery and many other churches in the surrounding villages.

tiefgarage am dom // köln altstadt

there is underground parking under the domplatte in cologne. that in itself is not spectacular information. however, you can immerse yourself in the history of cologne in this complex, because the remains of the old roman city wall run right through the underground car park, you can look into a cellar from the same period and discover a hidden medieval well. the whole thing is embedded in the brutalist architecture of the garage. on one side, the reinforced concrete of modern times  and on the other its ancient predecessor in an aesthetic symbiosis. and the best thing about it is that even when everything upstairs is flooded with crowds of tourists, it is relatively quiet and empty downstairs. apart from the cars, of course.
