living and dying in salzburg

that was the first thing that came to mind when i held my pictures in my hands. i was lucky enough to be able to stay with the barmherzigen brüdern in the centre of the old town and to be there out of season. this allowed me to experience the city in a different way than i would have as a mere tourist during the days i spent there and with the salzburgers.

"leben und sterben in salzburg"

das war das erste was mir zu meinem bildern einfiel als ich sie in den händen hielt. ich hatte das glück mitten in der altstadt bei den barmherzigen brüdern übernachten zu können und außerhalb der saison da zu sein. das machte die stadt während der tage die ich in ihr zubrachte und mit salzburgern verbrachte noch einmal anders erlebbar als ich es als reiner tourist getan hätte.

as rusty as some car underbodies but still elegant in its simplicity is the advertising for this car service in the heart of leopoldstadt. without it, the façade would be just a simple grey surface, but this way it attracts the interest of passers-by and invites them to take a closer look.

in vienna, you can discover street art on every corner. small as well as large. hidden as well as obvious. it's fun to walk through the streets and alleys and discover new things again and again.

the last part also includes views from the kaufpark, which lies exactly between blocks a and b. the church in the last contribution is between b and c. but all these places are connected by a common axis. the medical centres are on the side of block a. the house pictured, labelled dentist, is on the inside of the block and also contains administration and a kindergarten. the second centre, which also houses a kindergarten, is on the outside with a view of the underground.

this post and the next one are about views in and through the alterlaa complex. the site is not flat as one might think from aerial views but consists of several levels in the path structure. the parks are also slightly hilly and winding, which always makes for exciting views and insights.

now she begins the series on alt-erlaa. i spent a whole day in the complex. however, there is still so much to discover, especially in the buildings when you read the descriptions of how they are designed and furnished.  i approached from further away to understand the dimensions of the complex and then set about discovering and documenting the details.

the large housing estate alt-erlaa is a fascinating complex. you might think that such a settlement for 9,000 people should be barren and dreary, but that is exactly the opposite here. it is so green that you sometimes feel like you are in a forest or park. the blocks are so overgrown with green balconies that you wonder if the people have already disappeared and nature has taken everything back. this impression was also due to the fact that i encountered relatively few people except in the shopping arcade, even though it was the middle of the day. the blocks house a complete infrastructure with rooftop pools, swimming pools, solariums, saunas and indoor playgrounds, as well as the aforementioned shopping mall, which has a complete range of services. pavilion buildings with doctors, kindergarten and so on round off the offer.

doors and gates, so diverse also the design over time. from representative to reduced to pure function or changed in function over time. you can see this well in the last picture. the representative entrance door, whose wings are open at all times, has become a rubbish room, and the entire ground floor is now a garage.

mosaics are one of the oldest design tools in architecture. in the decades after the second world war, this design reached a tremendous climax, so that one frequently encounters them in post-war modern buildings, provided they have not been chipped off in recent years or have disappeared under insulation material. here are abstract examples from vienna that are also very well preserved.

the shop fronts of vienna's shops are designed from different eras and in different design languages. each owner designed them in the way he thought most meaningful. much more beautiful and varied than today, when we only encounter chain shops everywhere and the city centres seem interchangeable and uniform, devoid of any individuality and soul.

the cinema is not a shop as such, but for me it still somehow fits into the series.
