Mm… I mostly tend to graze lately, but here’s some comics that have left a strong impression on me over the years
- 8 Bit Theater… my bridge from Newgrounds to the webcomic scene – I remember attempting to connect with a dude wearing a Black Mage shirt at church camp (16) who responded by chastising me (11) for being too young to read it. Which was somewhat understandable, given how often the punchline was murder, but still felt ridiculous coming from a shirt with the character responsible for like 85% of the murder.
- Manly Guys Doing Manly Things… my favorite video game parody-type webcomic for years. The artist occasionally posted tutorials that helped me develop opinions on line weight (x) – also the first time I saw bisexuality discussed in media, I think?
- Unicorn Jelly… a SFF epic that shares with Homestuck the MS Paint aesthetics and jaw-dropping shifts in scale. Visually feels like a fairytale, but the way certain characters try to enforce the sense of innocence that the aesthetic entails even as violent circumstances unravel makes me incredibly uneasy. So, it shares some of my own tonal inclinations, I guess
- Angel Densetsu… comedy manga (though the OVA’s pretty good) about a polite boy with a scary face, who (via some WACKY misunderstandings) becomes his school’s head delinquent. A mix of chicken soup and passive power fantasies for people who are terrified of scaring other people, or otherwise feel like aliens in their environment – I like to read it against a short story called God Bless You, in which a friendly bear invites his human neighbor out for a picnic (occasionally being compelled to navigate how others might react poorly to his being a bear).
- Watamote… I can’t sum it up much better than this post (x).
- Hunter x Hunter and Diamond Is Unbreakable… shoving those into one entry cause irrespective of their distinct merits as stories, the art scratches similar compositional itches around contrast. HxH for the simple, stylized figures that are occasionally transformed by jarring, dense textures for emotional effect, and Jojo for the omnipresent mixture of thick fields of black and ultra-fine cross hatching.
