Out of Númenor’s twenty-five rulers, only three were female, but the existence of Ruling Queens under Númenórean law was remarkable in a society and a world dominated by male rulers. Tar-Míriel was the only child of Tar-Palantir, the twenty-fourth King of Númenor. By the Law of Succession, established by Tar-Aldarion, she should have become the fourth Ruling Queen of Númenor. However, after her father’s death, Míriel’s cousin Pharazôn took her unwillingly as his wife and seized the Sceptre of Númenor for himself, taking the title of Ar-Pharazôn the Golden. He changed Míriel’s name to Ar-Zimraphel.

LOCAL WOMAN RECEIVES MOST EXTREME DATING DEMAND EVER, AND IT’S NOT EVEN FROM HER BOYFRIEND
A local woman has been forbidden from dating unless her provisional boyfriend steals a priceless artefact from the most high-security location in Northern Beleriand, according to anonymous sources named Daeron this past Tuesday.
“Is the stupid Silmaril that great? Nope. Is it even my dad’s? Nope,” said Lúthien Tinúviel, a half-angel, half-elf princess. “But is he demanding that Beren [Camlost] get it anyway? Yup.”
Tinúviel has been seeing Camlost in secret from the first day of spring, according to local musician Daeron, who also voices reasonable doubts about the match.
“The King’s demands may seem extreme, but unfortunately, extreme measures are the only way to get through that Man’s thick head,” said Daeron, who claims to be Tinúviel’s ex. “I think it’s the only way we’ll get things back to the way they should be around here.”
Tinúviel’s father, Elu Thingol, had Camlost arrested Tuesday for trespassing in his Teleri- and Maia-only kingdom, but Tinúviel forestalled a formal trial by snatching Camlost away from his guards and walking him right into her parents’ room. Thingol’s demands to know who the Man was and what he was doing in Menegroth were apparently met with Tinuviel’s “he’s that pain in Morgoth’s ass you keep talking about congratulating” and Camlost’s slightly more formal “it was true love that brought me here.”
Allegedly, it was the phrase “true love” that ignited Thingol’s rage, not “Morgoth’s ass.”
Thingol, best known for the centuries-long disappearance in which he was the sketchy boyfriend, eventually admitted that Camlost’s inheritance, a green snake ring from Finrod Felagund’s Hot Topic phase, was inconveniently legitimate. An impossible quest seemed like the ideal solution after hours spent brandishing sovereign immunity with no effect.
“That’s how little you value your daughter? Whoah, I’m doing us both a favor,” Camlost is rumored to have said before being chased out of Menegroth by angry trees. “We’ll meet again, your majesty.”
In order to stand any chance at dating his One True Love™ and maybe getting started on some one-quarter-angel, one-quarter-elf, and two-quarters Atani children, Camlost is now bound to recover a Silmaril from the crown of Morgoth. (For any readers who have been living in an isolated forest kingdom for the last several thousand years, Morgoth is the rogue god currently terrorizing Northern Beleriand in hopes of consuming all Beleriand.)
Tinúviel has since been confined to her childhood treehouse until the matter is settled. Her guards report that she has been combing her hair excessively, but is otherwise quiet.

CALLING ALL TOLKIEN FAN ARTISTS!
There are just under 10 days left to sign up for 2021’s Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang. We’ve got some great submissions already but it would be wonderful if more of you could join us - the more artwork, the better!
I’d like to take part but I’ll never get anything finished in 10 days…
It doesn’t have to be finished - art drafts are due at 23.59 CET on 14 May, and the draft just needs to give a good idea of what the final piece will look like. Lineart which will have colour added later is fine, or you could submit a concept drawing of something that you will work on through the summer - a costume or an embroidery piece, for example. TRSB veteran @lidoshka made a handy reference post here.
Unless you decide that you want to be completely hands off in your partnership with your author, you have until 1st August to finish your art.
I’m not sure my art is eligible.
It probably is! We only turn down art for the following reasons:
1) It is so incomplete that you can’t get any idea what the finished piece will be like (e.g. it’s at the lines and blobs stage - a nice sketch, for example, would be fine, or a manip that’s still a little rough at the edges).
2) It doesn’t demonstrate sufficient original input (e.g. it’s screenshotted directly from a game with no transformative elements applied).
3) The piece(s) submitted have previously been published elsewhere (e.g. they’re already on DeviantArt).
We accept all kinds of artworks. In the past we’ve had sculpture and crafts as well as drawings, paintings, comic strips, moodboards, edits and digital manipulations - and this year we have cosplay and print block cutting in the mix as well. It would be great to broaden that out even further. (Calligraphy? Pyrography? Video?)
I’ve never done anything like this before! / I’m usually a writer and I’ve never published my art! I’m nervous!
You’re not on your own - every year we have a lot of first timers as well as plenty of experienced participants. The mods will happily answer any questions you have; our FAQ section gives a fairly comprehensive run-down of the event, but if something isn’t clear, please just ask!
What if nobody wants to claim my art?
We cannot absolutely promise that every artwork will find a loving home with one of our authors, but rest assured that demand on claims night is always extremely high - Mod Narya is still scarred by Year 1, when we had 24 claims in under two minutes! And it isn’t always the obvious characters and pairings that get snapped up first…
In the event that there is more art than claiming authors, we will run second claims. We also have an excellent team of pinch hitters and treat makers, and will do our very best to find someone to write for your creative efforts.
I only know/like the films. Is this an event for the books?
No! We like movieverse too.
Do I have to help the author with the story? I don’t think I can do that!
That’s OK! We have a range of collaboration levels that you select from when you submit your art, including low-commitment options (though we do ask that you are responsive to your author and reply to any questions within 48 hours, unless you have told them in advance that you’re going to be unavailable for a period of time).
