I follow Jesus Christ ✝️. I'm 33 years old. I am currently doing the "Bible in a Year", would you like to be prayer buddies? I am a woman rooted in and moving ever more towards traditionalism. 🌻 Slytherin House. 💚🐍 I'm very much into spirituality, it is the natural development when dealing with trauma. 🌱 I love languages and history and nature and learning about people. I'm a fan of many things, books and art and stories. And there is so much more, feel free if you want to ask. 💖

I don't know if I'm stirring up issues here but I've recently been looking into Gene Kelly a bit more because I thought my Fred&Ginger-loving could use a little bit more versatile entertainment around every now and then. I've been really trying to like Gene Kelly somewhat but it honestly isn't very easy when you're so used to Fred Astaire. Artistically it's alright but on a personal level not so easy. So really, I was trying to be more open-minded and was trying to see him in a better light and then I come across stuff like this here:

While I genuinely hope there is better context to this, I have to say this ends my little excursion. My girl Ginger will ALWAYS have my top affection here. From this quote I really have to say, what an a**!!! I understand why she never danced one step with him and good on her!

I'll put this quote from Fred here for balance because it seems fitting and I need some genuine reassurance for Ginger in this whole thing.

Just adding in some Fred&Ginger thoughts. I don't really care how definitely realistic they are, maybe a little hopeful thinking can have its merits too. ;)

So what I thought is that if Hermes Pan, their choreographer/ friend hadn't been gay, that would most likely have posed a real problem. It helped them have a harmonious relationship as it was.

I know this may be tmi but everytime I'm looking at these wonderful dances by Fred&Ginger I can't help but wonder some things. This happened all in a time pre-deodorant. How did you manage...? 😳 Like, Fred&Ginger were dancing for hours on end, I know what it's like to dance for an hour and you're very sweaty, how did they manage 14 hour days like this without a shower in between or as I said, deodorant. I've heard some statements about this question during this time but as far as I can gather, you just kind of had to get used to more body odour more or less. The nose kind of tunes out the smell at some point. You can be clean all you want and I'm sure they were but without the means we have today, you just start to smell. Those dresses would smell awful after about 3 rounds of dancing, especially with the ruffles and feathers and elegant but impractical details. And Fred in 3-piece-suits, that gets hot and you sweat that through rather quickly. I guess as a dancer, you just got used to it after a while. 🤷‍♀️

And the other thing is that this is also a time before tampons as we know them today. I often wonder like...girl, how did you manage? This is strenuous work, how do you do that on your period, especially without the modern utensils for that time!? Aren't you worried there might be accidents and isn't it difficult to do a lot of movements while wearing a pad? I would be very uncomfortable with it. 😖 This is a topic of something that we know happened but it wasn't talked about, understandably.

I don't know, this is just something that occupies my mind sometimes while watching and I wish I were a little mouse, who could tell how it really went off camera. 🐀😉😁

@cartoon-heart - That is interesting, I did not know that! It does make sense, on the other hand that's another layer of warm clothing. 🙈 It was just pretty hard back then I guess. I know that for the terrible "Never gonna dance"-experience he also sweat through a couple of shirts. And you're right, Ginger didn't have the option of changing clothes. I wonder how smelly Fred and Ginger really were. 😆

What I find fascinating though is that you never really see a drop of sweat on them in the dancing parts on the movies. You never see any clothing being sweat through. They did a very exceptional job.

@fuckyeahfredandginger - True, that's what I gathered too from many people sharing their memories of that time. People were not necessarily unclean, they just had to get used to more smell in general.

I see that in 1931 tampons were more or less officially invented, I always thought that was later. If Ginger had access to it and felt comfortable using it, that would certainly have helped with the dancing, even though tampons were probably not as easy to use as they are today. Difficult times for things like these. I hope she took care of herself in those aspects especially.

~🌸~🌻~🌸~🍀~🌸~🌻~🌸~🍀~

Whenever I look at you, you are as young and as beautiful to me as you were back then. In my memory, we are the two dancers, who young and so lightly danced through the bustling world, laughing with their whole hearts, blithely and full of joy together.

You remain the lady dancer, with whom I've laughed the very most and whose hand I will always reach for first.

(This is probably not how it was but how I wished it was. I had a bit of an end-of-Titanic-movie-moment when I randomly saw these two pictures right on top of each other on Pinterest. Ginger is wearing the necklace he gave her in the second picture too. (I notice that a necklace also played a role in relation to the 'Titanic'-moment.) I kind of hope it meant something good too. I hope they were both happy and did each other's hearts good. 💛)

I would like to share this little picture because sometimes I like to admire and revel in it for a while. Especially when I don't feel so good. I don't remember who made this manip, I'm sorry. If someone recognizes it and wants it to be taken down or be credited, please tell me!

I genuinely just wanted to share it because sometimes I have to indulge myself in the possibilities of other timelines. ☺️💞

I always think it's funny that so often Fred&Ginger's movies reflect them back. Like this scene in "Follow the fleet" for example. He says that Sherry found it more important to take off for her career but back when they were together, he had asked her to marry him.

I'm pretty much a 100% sure that this had happened to them in real life too. We know she took off for her career and I'm finding it *very* plausible that he had asked her to marry him before that. And a bit of a difficult relationship ensued at first when they met each other again later for their first film obviously.

Also somehow I'm currently having the insight that they most definitely slept with each other back when they were dating in New York. And I'm now seeing that in the context of them doing all of those movies together later, it's insane! Working together in such a super physical way is totally crazy when you actually think about it. He did all those often intimate choreographies with a woman he used to sleep with! And the other way around she did too. That's soooo weird to think about but also captivating. 😁😎

Also on a side note, I'll never be over the little song part before the "I'm putting all my eggs in one basket"-routine! They look so into each other and it really looks very genuine and from the heart, like they're just so happy to be there with each other. 😊💞

Swing Time. 1936.

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Lucky Garnett & Penny Carroll.

They're so cute and beautiful, look how he's holding her here! Absolutely delicate and yet so intense. They really look intertwined but gently. 💞
