With heavy steps, Bucky shuffled to his door at three in the morning. A persistent knock had forced him to get on his feet again.

“Hey.” Y/N greeted him sheepishly in their pyjamas as he opened the door.

“Nightmare?” he hummed blearily and Y/N nodded, “Come in.”

Y/N shuffled into his room and gently closed the door behind them. Bucky had already retreated to his sofa and plummeted head first onto it.

“I’m sorry if I woke you up but I didn’t know where else to go.” Y/N apologized as they sat beside him.

“Is your lover boy still on his royal excursion?“ Bucky mumbled into the cushions.

When you started working at the Avengers compound you could never have guessed what your life there would be like. And indeed every day was a surprise. You were hired as part of the medical staff after Tony read your thesis about modern medicine applied to metahumans. From day one you have been part of Dr. Banner's team and you were over the moon. Your work consisted in finding new ways of healing wounds inflicted by non-conventional weapons on enhanced humans. It was a challenging job that kept you on your feet and you loved it. And being so close to the almighty heroes almost made you feel one as well. One could dream.

In the span of a month you met most of the Avengers. They were nice and always grateful of your assistance. Captain America was polite and stoic, trying to be helpful in any way he could. Peter Parker always stammered and fidgeted while you looked at his wounds, something you found endearing. Bucky Burnes flirted with everyone. The Falcon told terrible jokes that made you cry from laughter and Thor was so gallant in an old-fashion way that you almost felt as a maiden healing a White Knight.

And then there was Loki.

You awoke in the night, your stomach growling. You hated this. All you wanted to do was sleep peacefully without being disturbed by your stomach churning, begging relentlessly for food. For goodness sakes, it was one in the morning.

You sighed, throwing the blankets off of you and planting your feet snug on the floor. You reached over and grabbed your silk robe that Loki had gifted you a few weeks prior. It was pure silk, donning emerald as its primary color. It matched well with the outfit he was known for.

Loki coming to your mind, you happened to glance over and see that your lover wasn’t in bed with you.

He typically found himself also being disturbed awake at night. Not by you, sometimes he just couldn’t sleep.

There was something about the way he touched you.

He held back for a long time. That wasn’t really a surprise. Loki had always kept to himself. Many of the Avengers did, but he was always especially closed-off. You’d always done your best to try to make him feel welcome, but you never really expected anything in return. It was like you were trying to make up for the neutral-to-chilly welcome he’d received from the rest of the team. For a long time—too long—the others saw no point in even trying to hide their distaste for the man. That made you uncomfortable. He didn’t want to be here any more than the others wanted him here, but it wasn’t like he had a choice. So you walked the line: You worked to be as warm and welcoming as you could be without overdoing it. It didn’t take a genius to know that he wasn’t used to kindness.
