SKAM JERUSALEM//סקאם ירושלים

Yitzi (Isak) was born Chasidic (Ultra-orthodox), his parents broke up when he was very young and he and his Dad slowly became less religious over time. His Dad still looked after his mother and he lived with his now-non religious dad while his mom stayed in Mea She’arim (Chasidic Neighbourhood). His dad works between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv but is barely in Jerusalem anymore. Yitzi didn’t want to move to TA so now stays in a flatshare of Lone Soldiers (or at least intended for Lone Soldiers) (Soldiers who’s parents aren’t supporting them - either because they are immigrants or because they come from families who can’t or won’t support them) in the city center.

He lives with:

Na’ama (Noora), who’s been going between Israel and America all her life but her American parents have been travelling for the last few years. She grew up largely in Hashmona’im as an American Yishuvnik (Community of english speaking immigrants who live in small communities) and struggled to adjust to Jerusalem life. She moved into the flatshare after befriending Aleksei (Eskild) - , an openly gay, flamboyant Ukranian Oleh who serves in combat, who Na’ama met at an evening Arabic course tought in English and they somehow became best friends. Also Lea (Lynn) from Haifa, also grew up religious but left and joined the army, who is a Jobnik (a non-combat army position with office hours) in a base near Jerusalem and is either working or sleeping.

When Na’ama found out about Yitzi’s situation, she suggested he moved in too, since their 4th roommate (another American Lone Soldier who they never spoke to or saw because he was either on base or with his girlfriend all. the. time. ) just got married and moved out.

Odélia (Eva) is an Olah (immigrant) from France. Her and her mother moved to Israel about 3 years ago, but she is still struggling with language, since they first moved to a french neighbourhood before coming to a more mixed area of Jerusalem. Her dad and siblings live in France and her mother goes back to visit often, leaving Odélia alone in their large Rechavia (posh part of the center of Jerusalem) appartment. She and Na’ama immediately bonded over a) feeling like foreigners in their very Israeli school and b) having more of a western fashion sense (aka refusing to wear blunstones every day)

She started dating Nadav (Jonas) as soon as she moved to their school. At first she was drawn to him because he also spoke french (he has moroccan parents), but they gravitated towards eachother and fell deeply in hipster love. YItzi and Nadav have known eachother since they were young and in B’nei Akiva (youth group) together (In Yitzi’s father’s modern orthodox phase, he sent Yitzi to Bnei for some stability. And to get him out the house.) and they stayed in touch. Yitzi had spent nearly every shabbat at Nadav’s parents house for the last few years, the Sabag family becoming like Yitzi’s own. He was their token ashkenazi child.

Miriam (Sana) became quite Haredi (ultra-orthodox) when she was 15, and it stuck. Her family are Ethiopian and religious, but Miriam decided she wanted to be much more religious than them, which they support more or less… the only problem? She also wants to be a doctor, which she’s wanted to her whole life. So much so that she (and her parents) would rather go to a masorti (traditional Jewish values) school that will encourage her to attend a mainstream university, rather than a girls college. So she is one of the only girls in the school who wears shirts, pleated skirts and tights all year round, and recieves a lot of shit, as she is also one of the only Ethiopian girls in their Rechavia school… things are interesting when she befriends Yitzi, one of the whitest people in her school and, little does she know, who has the most baggage against the Haredi community. Her house is basically a drop in soldier center at this point for her brother and all his friends from Magav (Israeli border police, very popular unit in the Ethiopian community). But she does miss seeing her favourite of her brothers’ friends, Natan (Even), who, for some mysterious reason had dropped out of the boys’ Mechina (Army prep course) the previous year, hadn’t even drafted and was reportedly floating around in the Desert somewhere, rumoured to return to Jerusalem soon...

- Of course I brought food. I’m not going on a date with a girl who’s been fasting for 19 hours without bringing food. Don’t make me throw you into the water! Seriously! Of course I brought food. I’m Yousef.
Awww…
- Don’t ‘awwww’ me. I get really awkward, seriously. I can’t even look at you now.

I think this is a hilarious question, so here is my way too long response:

In short, kinda unrealistic. At least for me, when I was 17, I did not by movies online, I streamed them or downloaded them illegally. A lot of people in the comment sections on Skam also said this. I do however buy movies now, because I make enough money, and I think it’s usually worth it.

However!! Isak as a character is LOUSY with technology. I refer you to a) the Gay Porn Incident: like who the fuck doesn’t close their porn tabs??!! Especially if you are gay and still in the closet.. b) his poor attempts at finding Even on social media.. yeah, he is probably not on social media, but Isak still did a lousy job trying to find him. He only searches Evens full name, both on the computer and his phone. Like, try going through Elvebakken groups, look up his classmates, try without his middle name etc. c) Internet explorer, do I need to say more??? d) “I haven’t had 3G” excuse me but you have been at home with WiFi most likely, and you have an iPhone 6 and Oslo pretty much have 4G everywhere…

So with all of this in mind, it is very possible that Isak doesn’t know how to find Romeo and Juliet online and stream it for free. Also, his father seems to have money, maybe he pays his iTunes accounts, in which case he would probably rent movies out of spite.

Thank you for you attention. This has been a low key drag and over analysis of an unimportant part of Isak’s character.

okay but imagine if sana went with the boys to help them unpack. even orders pizza from the car and before sana can say anything he’s like ‘one pepperoni and one margherita please!’ and he just gives her a soft smile. and then he’s like ‘oh, and four boxes of potato wedges’ and jonas gives him a little salute. at first she’s confused - ‘you don’t like pizza?’ but then he explains to sana he’s observing passover right now and of course starts longingly talking about bread and the boys are like ‘you’re doing so good man!!! halfway through the week you’re getting there!!’ and sana just feels so happy because these boys are so accepting and pure and they celebrate their diversity and she just enjoys being a part of a little multicultural squad
