Homer was a nuclear engineer. The salary for a nuclear engineer in today's money is $47 an hour.
Not to burst everyone's bubble, but Homer wasn't a nuclear engineer, he was a safety inspector, and in season 7 we see he's making about $12 an hour, which adjusted for inflation would be $23/hour today. So... yeah he can't afford that house.
Before he became safety inspector, he was a nuclear engineer. According to the wiki, anyway
Yes, he is promoted in the first episode, but I assume his promotion wouldn't somehow pay less than his original position as a nuclear engineer so that's sort of a moot point.
