Sam Wilson + Meeting Captain America

okay, but this is such a good parallel. When Sam meets the real Captain America, Steve doesn’t introduce himself as such. He doesn’t salute or act all high and mighty, as if he’s coming to rescue Sam. He’s simply a guy who runs with him, outlaps him (and good-naturedly messes around with him) and then comes to check up on him and introduce himself later. As a result, he and Sam hit it off and eventually become good friends.

When Sam first meets John Walker, aka fake Captain America, John is rappelling down from a helicopter to interfere with Sam’s mission. He makes certain that Sam knows he’s Captain America, he salutes (which is really condescending, imo, even though him saluting first should be a sign of respect but that’s a whole other point). While John’s help may have been appreciated had he approached Sam differently (and he had the opportunity to rectify this after the fight), he instead insulted both Sam and Bucky by referring to them as Cap’s sidekicks when in fact Steve Rogers had never treated or inferred that Sam and Bucky were anything less than equals. As a result, Sam is disgusted and walks away
