I am. So fucking tired of Batman being portrayed as a bad parent and a toxic person. And it’s so goddamn widespread. Fuck, it might be as bad as the whole “Superman being a kindhearted Boy Scout is boring” take.

I get it, the man’s not exactly stable, he watched his parents get murdered in front of him and spent years of his life training to fight crime dressed like a giant scary bat, of course he’s not perfect.

But to say that Bruce Wayne isn’t caring, isn’t empathetic, to call him abusive…it just misses the point of who the character is to me.

Why do you think he fights crime? Yes, part of it is because he’s bitter and sad because his parents were cruelly ripped from him as a child, and he’s lashing out against the corruption of his city. It’s arguably the focus of his earlier years. But he learns to become more than that. He learns to bring hope, a chance to be better.

Harleen Quinzel is the Joker’s right hand lady, but she’s also a victim of an abusive relationship and a woman with a surprisingly strong moral compass and a love for animals, and wants to get better.

Harvey Dent is a man who will decide someone’s fate on a coin toss(and a pretty inaccurate depiction of DID), but he’s also Bruce’s close friend who clearly needs help learning to live with his condition, rather than try to get rid of it, and someone who he still goes out of his way to visit, even after everything.

Victor Fries is a cold, emotionless man who will callously discard allies and blame them for being careless, but he’s also a man who’s either lashing out because he had the love of his life taken from him, or just desperate to make sure she isn’t taken from him, and is willing to do anything just to guarantee her survival.

Even the Joker, arguably one of the most morally bankrupt characters in all of fiction, is someone that Batman has offered a chance to. After the guy shoots the daughter of his friend, a girl he cared for like she was his own kid, and paralyzes her from the waist down, he tells the Joker that he doesn’t want to hurt him. He wants to get him help. He looks at this monster who has taken countless lives and says “You don’t have to be alone.”

For fuck’s sake, he sat with Joe Chill in his last moments so that he wouldn’t be alone. Joe Chill, the man who murdered his parents, who took so much from him, the person responsible for all of the misery and suffering he’s gone through. And he sits with the man to comfort him while dies.

And you’re gonna tell me the man who did that would abuse his kids?

That he’d hold up the young man whose death was his greatest failure, the boy he grieved, and say this?

That he’d look his goddamn son in the eyes and say this to him?

Why the FUCK do you think he took in Dick Grayson in the first place? It wasn’t because he saw the kid and thought “Ah. A potential soldier.”, it was because he saw a boy experiencing the same heartbreaking loss he had so many years ago, and wanted to make sure he didn’t end up as bitter and miserable as he was.

Why do you think he smiled when Tim Drake presented him a broken watch for Father’s Day? Because he was just happy to see the boy alive and safe.

DAMIAN LITERALLY POINTED AT A COW AND SAID “I’m keeping her. She’s Bat-Cow.” AND BRUCE JUST WENT WITH IT. DIDN’T EVEN NEED TO ARGUE WHY BRUCE SHOULD LET HIM KEEP HER. HE SAID “this cow is my pet now” AND BRUCE SAID “alright, bet”.

The thing about Batman is that he wants to make sure nobody else ends up feeling the way he does. That’s not just about stopping a mugger so a boy’s parents aren’t gunned down. It’s about giving his loved ones the support and care that he couldn’t have, because it was taken from him. It’s about comforting someone who just went through a traumatic experience and letting them know that they’re going to be okay. It’s about going to someone locked away in a cell who thinks that they’re a lost cause and a burden to society and telling them that he wants to help them get better. It’s about EMPATHY.

That’s what makes him a HERO. He’s meant to inspire us, to show us that we can have that same empathy for others around us, that we can turn our suffering into hope for a better future.

I just wish more people at DC would start recognizing that. But I might as well follow that example myself. Maybe through this struggle of having to see this hero mistreat the people around him and act like a grade-A jackass, people will start to recognize that missing empathy, and slowly but surely, it might come back. After all, what is this post, if not trying to bring attention to the matter in the hopes of fixing it?

The thing I noticed about abusive Bruce is that comes primarily from Nightwing and Jason Todd writers (specially from the new 52 run) who wanted to give them conflicts but couldn't figured out anything outside of Barman's shadow. That and comics as old as 40 years old from now (that was published at the same time that was socially acceptable to bitch slap a female romantically interest in a movie).

And now people still use it as a proof of a brute, out of character and violent Batman. And the DC team, who for some reason despise the Robins and the Father and Children relationship dynamic they have, as an excuse to butcher even more his character and make him this boogie man, punisher ripped off that is too powerful for his own good and fill their own ultra power alpha male fantasy.

Nevermind the 80's of different characterizations of Batman that shows his compassionate and kind side. Nevermind it doesn't even make any fucking sense in the cannon (you telling me Superman the guy who canonically has the heartbeat of every single person he cares about in tune all the time and canonically interfered and saved them before, including Tim heard Batman beating the shit of Dick Grayson and did nothing? That he would do this kind of shit and the JLA would just turn a fucking blind eye and move on? That Oracle would be aware that her boyfriends and bestfriend father beat him till the ground until he was almost entirely bleeding and just "oh well that happens" and keep working with him?). Nevermind the thing that pushes Bruce to still be Batman is to keep Gotham and his loved ones safe, to always turn the other cheek and hope fore the best in people.

They don't care. And the worst part is that instead of calling them out on their bullshit people are falling for it.

"Hello Bruce. Until now, you've lived by one rule. Letting murderers live to kill again. Inflicting harm upon them, but sending them to a prison you know they can, and will escape from, only to maim and murder once again. Do you truly fight for justice, or the mere illusion of it? We’ll find out today. Live or die, Bruce. The choice is yours."

Trap scenarios for Batman. Each trap has a rogue’s gallery theme “ice trap for Mr Freeze / Poison for Ivy / Save two batkids at same time for two face” The gist is simple. Bruce has to choose between his rogues and his family. I have writer's block, so if anyone has trap/test suggestions, feel free to add them.

the final trap being Joker and Alfred shackled onto two tables with a dialysis machine looking contraption between them; they're both held inside a cage and a small pillar with a button on it is outside.

"Hello Bruce, and welcome to your final test. The men before you have played similar yet opposite roles in your life. One is an enemy that you have never truly conquered, and the other is an ally who has never wavered in his support of your conquest. In sixty seconds, the machine will begin to pump Alfred's veins full if hydrofluoric acid. If you push the button before then however, the acid will instead be pumped into the veins of the Joker. Will you do it this time, Batman? Will you take one life in order to save another?"

What the Arkham Knight should have been

I do love Arkham Knight, but the reveal that the Arkham Knight was Jason Todd, I was honestly disappointed. If it were up to me, this is how it could’ve gone.

  1. The Arkham Knight should have just been a symbolic title and ya know, ACTUALLY focus on the villains teaming up. The Gotham Rogues teaming up is the main threat. The reveal of the Arkham Knight being a re-skin of the Red Hood has been talked about to death. What hasn’t been talked about as much is the missed opportunity of having a game where Batman has to deal with the ramifications of the Joker’s death. Arkham Knight opens with Commissioner Gordon talking about how Gotham braced itself for the inevitable power struggle that never came. But what if it had? Instead of pushing some of Batman’s greatest villains into a few side-quests (that all played basically the same), the game’s story could have focused on the Bat Family as it fights to save Gotham. Players could have swapped between the best of Batman's team as they tackle missions all over Gotham, the Asylum, and Arkham City. Areas visible in the game but not accessible. This would have allowed the story of the Arkham games to come full circle as players would have traveled back to locations previously seen and explored them with the changes made as the story for the games went on. Plus it would finally give all the members of the Bat Family a chance to spread their wings. We needed to see Scarecrow, Harley, Ivy, Penguin, Hush, Riddler and Two-Face work together as major threats and we needed to see Bruce and his family work together to stop them and honestly that would’ve been so much better.
  2. The Arkham Knight is Damian Wayne. Damian is the Arkham Knight. Talia talked about Bruce and Talia's night in Metropolis. So you could have a tease for Damian there. But Ra's raised Damian and indoctrinated him. This is a Damian without Bruce's influence and was raised to believe that Bruce is responsible for his mother's death and together Ra's and Damian will fulfill the LOA's destiny. Everything leading up to learning his identity is the same(though Arkham Knight uses a sword and throwing stars instead of guns) When the mask comes off, Batman is confused due to how much he looks like him. Damian explains that he is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul. Damian blames him for the death of his mother and Ra's Al Ghul. But if Ra's is alive via the season of Infamy DLC. Work it into the story. Say Damian is working with Ra's similar to how Hugo Strange was working with Ra's. Damian names himself after the place his family died and now he wants his father dead. There'd be more emotional impact and would have made more sense than trying to convince viewers that Jason was Robin in this continuity.
  3. Arkham Knight is Protocol 12. Hugo Strange works for Ra’s, but however, Let’s pay attention to this. From Quincy Sharp, he says “Strange came to me back at the asylum. He told me he had friends; powerful friends. The sort of people who could make things happen. All I had to do was turn a blind eye to his experiments, and work on my campaign. He said his friends would ensure that I won" In Strange’s confrontation with Batman. “ I have powerful friends, Batman. This is just the beginning.“ Now if you’ve watched Justice League Unlimited, you will know that Hugo Strange is a Departmental head of Project CADMUS. So What if In the Arkhamverse, Strange is still apart of Project CADMUS. While Ra’’s was the mastermind, the Arkham City project was planned by CADMUS as a start to take down Batman and Gotham, but a start to bring down the Justice League. The Arkham Knight would be Strange’s and CADMUS' last fail safe to bring an end to Batman. The identity is not important. All we need to know is it is a CADMUS experiment and Strange’s last trump card against Batman. The Arkham Knight should have been it’s own character and not a copout to make him Jason Todd and there was so much lost potential.
  4. Jeremiah Arkham is the Arkham Knight. In Arkham Asylum, Quincy Sharp believed himself to be the Spirit of Amadeus Arkham. This could simply be Sharp being the zealous warden that he was but it could have set up something else. What if Jeremiah Arkham was the REAL reincarnation of Amadeus Arkham? He shares a similar story already, treating mentally unwell patients until it drove him insane. Instead of becoming the next Black Mask, he could have become the purifier of evil that Quincy Sharp tried to be: the Arkham Knight.
  5. The Joker and Harley Quinn’s son is The Arkham Knight. In Arkham City it is heavily teased that Joker and Harley had a baby. Before anyone comments about Harley’s revenge, that was actually unpopular with the fandom, so it could’ve been retconned. From a comment I found on the Arkham reddit.  “The game begins the traditional way where you lead a character around but can't perform any actions. You control Harley who's in shock after Joker's death and hasn't spoken a work since. You control her as she's being escorted into Blackgate staying true to the prison opening setting of all the games. Joker's death sends shockwaves across Gotham. Soon enough, her thugs break her out and they arrive at an abandoned warehouse where Harley walks in alone, she opens a shipping container and a kidnapped nurse from Arkham City walks out and pleads with her to let her go, telling her she's done all they've asked. Harley agrees that she has but says that no one can know about their child yet, she shoots the nurse and the shot wakes a baby inside the container, Harley then picks it up and sings it the lullaby we hear in the Arkham City end credits. Cut to black. 15 years later. Harley Quinn and the Arkham Knight gathers the rogues gallery. Scarecrow, Hush, Poison Ivy, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Penguin all working together to take down the Bat and make Gotham theirs.  The difference is the rogues would not be used in side missions exclusively. They would work in the story mandatory similar to how Spider-Man PS4′s villains worked in the main story and we take them down one by one.

Who's your fancast for the Arrowverse Bat-family?

I only think Batwoman will appear in the Arrowverse. DC/WB thinks their audience is stupid. Remember the Batembargo? That’s pretty much why I think we won’t see any other Batfamily in the Arrowverse. We have Dick and Jason in Titans, we have Bruce and Alfred in Gotham and the DCEU. There is a mention of Oracle existing, so maybe we will see Barbara. But to humor you, I will fancast some of the Batfamily I think we might see.

Ruby Rose as Batwoman/Kate Kane

Matt Bomer as Batman/Bruce Wayne

Peter Capaldi as Alfred Pennyworth

Bryan Cranston as James Gordon

Jesús Castro as Nightwing/Dick Grayson

Abigail Cowen as Oracle/Barbara Gordon

Gavin Leatherwood as Red Hood/Jason Todd

Ryan Potter as Robin/Tim Drake

Teresa Ting as Batgirl/Barbara Gordon(also my DCEU Cass choice)

Kiernan Shipka as Spoiler/Stephanie Brown
