He’s still so awestruck that she believes in him that much, that anyone believes in him that much, because up until recently, everyone has called him pirate, saying he’ll always be a pirate, he’ll never be part of this town or Emma’s family, and he thinks if anyone hears one more story of his pirate past, everyone will revert back to that thinking that he’s a no good pirate villain. He’s clearly blown away by this trust Emma has put in him, especially after he lied to her earlier in the day. And of course anything bad he did in his past is magnified in hindsight as more terrible, unforgivable in his mind, so he just doesn’t believe that, no matter what, no matter who he was or what he did, she’s going to treat him the same and treat him for who he is now and that is just something he hasn’t experienced in hundreds of years. AND SINCE THE BEGINNING he’s asked for Emma to trust him and to have finally achieved that with her believing in him so whole-heartedly must be pretty shocking and he’s like are you sure? what if it’s worse than you could ever fathom? And she’s just like you’ve been there for me consistently and haven’t let me down and I’m going to do the same for you because you’ve proved yourself time and time again to be good, a hero, and it’s time you start thinking of yourself that way, too, and I think he’s finally starting to listen, now that Emma’s assured him that his past doesn’t matter to her, that they will still be them no matter what, it’s like he can finally put his mind at ease and stop worrying about her learning things about his past and since she’s opened up to him so much, he can finally feel comfortable to start doing the same.
