Dragons were once the protectors of Middle Earth. At the dawn on time, they soared through the blue skies and defended the lands from any source of evil lurking within the shadows. They were fierce creatures, deadly to anyone who wished to harm another. However, all that is good does not last in a world full of malevolent men and beings. The once ruling and undefeated dragons were now scarce after so many have been slaughtered during battle. They grew fewer and fewer within each passing day.
In the midst of the sorrow and loss, they found comfort in the Elves of Naldore, seeking refugee within their power and near immortality. Unlike the other species, the dragons grew fond of them for their kindness and became attached to them in ways no one from any other land could comprehend. They would become inseparable in life and death, neither could live without the other. Some would say it was more of a curse than a blessing to have their life sired to another, but the Elves of Naldore were honored to die alongside their companion rather than dying alone.
Thus, the land of Naldore was untouchable with large beasts that can burn anything in its wake. It wasn’t until the rise of the rogue and powerful Smaug vanquished their peace by taking over Erebor and burned the city of Dale to the ground. With it’s rare set of iron scales, no man or dragon was able to stop it from spreading its wrath on the Lonely Mountain. When the ruler of Naldore and his companion set off to put an end to the monster’s wickedness, the ruler was killed during the battle with his dragon dying as well.
Ever since then, Naldore vowed to protect their creatures for as long as the Elves lived. They didn’t offer help and refused any requests to keep the dragons safe from extinction. When Galdalf the Grey, who was accompanied with thirteen dwarves, asked for assistance to defeat Smaug and reclaim Erebor for Thorin Oakenshield, they denied and sent them away.
However, a young Elven women, Ethiriel, couldn’t stand aside for people in need.
