During Trespasser, while recovering, Somhairle spends some time reflecting. He’s no stranger to staying in bed, waiting out pain, but this time he has no distractions. This time, unfortunately, he’s left with nothing to do but think. About the years before and the years to come. About the scorned followers, the lost allies, and being left with only his closest friends.

Is change for the better truly better when forced upon people who don’t want it? If even Dorian, his husband, hesitated to trust him with the influence he held. What influence mattered if he pushed Dorian away?

When he limps into the Exalted Council, they aren’t expecting him. He isn’t supposed to be out of bed without assistance, much less stumbling across the palace grounds. Divine Victoria, Vivienne, watches him with a mixture of concern and intrigue. Dorian, he’s certain, is somewhere in the pews, wringing his hands to keep from jumping after him.

Somhairle disbands the Inquisition. All things considered, it doesn’t seem to matter anymore.

Dorian, simultaneously researching time magic, necromancy, and the rift, scouring records for useful political maneuvers to win more people to their side, worrying about what the Anchor might do to the Inquisitor and studying the rift even more, trying to mitigate the harm having a Tevinter in the party might cause while overcompensating trying to help, all while being ready to fight at the Inquisitor’s side in the field at the drop of the hat: “What are you talking about? I’m sorry you have poor taste in men, but there is a literal hole in the sky… do you want to get drunk about it I guess?”

I can't get over how making Dorian the 'gay best friend' is one of the most insulting things you could do to the man. Especially because it discounts the potential of not only his own character growth but what a heartaching, compelling friendship he could have with the Inquisitor. How significant it is for such a lonely man who hides between arrogance, privilege, and charm because growing close to him has been dangerous. Especially if the Inquisitor themselves has suffered through parental abuse and rejection--not only for their sexuality, but for who they are or what they believe. For them to say to Dorian 'I think you're brave' for standing up in the face of his abuser and saying 'no' despite the love he had and for Dorian to understand the hidden meaning behind it.

Because some people have not yet gathered that bravery.

That perhaps they know of him, intimately, because they too have stared in the face of a parent or loved one and known they were not enough.

And Dorian feeling not only vulnerable but safe enough smile back and share his secret bravery. To be known fully by the Inquisitor, to sit with them with a shadow of a lie, and actually hold a true smile because they see him.

Friendships are important and to miss that for Dorian is not just a shame, it's a detriment to who he is.
