Agree with both Amy and Daph-senpai. I agree with Amy-senpai’s points on why the MC doesn’t have any eyes, and I also agree with Daph-senpai that I’d much rather prefer MC to be less creepy and more… you know, human.
I also think that taking out the eyes is somewhat cultural. We’re all aware of censorship in Japan when it comes to nudity (hello, pixels!), but some might not know how they usually censor faces for anonymity. If in most countries the face is blurred or pixelated, in Japan, oftentimes only censor bars covering the eyes are used. Kinda like this:
So perhaps that kind of cultural phenomenon translated into the MC having no eyes - for her to remain anonymous.
Artistically, I get at how MC’s red hair could complement most other colors, and how, theoretically, it’ll give the MC a warmer and more colorful appearance. But if otoge companies were aiming at just the MC being anonymous or relatable, giving her a hair color that’s naturally the rarest sort of defeats the purpose. Why not give her black, as it’s the most common hair color? Too dark? Why not a shade of brown? I think more neutral shades like those would make her blend with the guys, even if they had green or orange hair, and if the artists wanted to add color and warmth, hey, she has an entire body to dress up; dress her in warm and vibrant colors. Just saying.
So in the end, I personally think of Voltage’s MCs as a lump of flesh with a wig. Like, my brain doesn’t register she’s there, or that she’s me. With her head away from me, she’s too different for me to make the connection, and with her looking at me, she’s too creepy-looking for me to acknowledge her to be an actual character. I’ve always felt like I’m left with a half-baked character. I’d rather much preferred it if they decided to completely blank her out (like in Daph’s example), or completely flesh her out (like in Hakuoki).
So there’s my two cents. :/
