Can someone help me understand what’s going on in Doctor Who? I apparently missed something where the Doctor has a granddaughter. When was this first mentioned?

I’m on episode 8, so try not to spoil the last two episodes, but it’s been mentioned in a episode or two that I’ve watched today and I’m so confused

I’m rewatching Rookie Blue, and I CANNOT fathom why McNally faced harsher consequences for the affair with Swarek while he was undercover.

Not only did he participate, he called her over to his undercover house AND she wasn’t even the reason he got abducted. Like I get it, they broke the rules, but why McNally got shit on and Swarek didn’t, I’ll never understand
