Zevran’s “I’m in mortal danger - better flirt” is an inspiration to rp players everywhere, I tell you. Alas, I fear his days of standing around being pretty ended by the time he appeared in DA2.

Reaching Zevran

So, this is something I’ve been thinking about for a while, now. And that’s how both the Warden and Wynne try to get Zevran to open up, with varying degrees of success.

Wynne tries to badger Zevran into admitting that he feels guilty about what he’s done, and constantly pushes him. In response, he deflects, often by flirting with her, to avoid the issue she keeps bringing up. She also frames what he’s doing in black and white morality, that he was doing wrong, and that he realized that, which is why he’s with the group. And she never really stops and talks to him, and learns what kind of person he is. Rather, she takes her worldview, and imposes what kind of person she thinks that he is onto him, via her worldview, which is something she does quite a bit in general. And because Wynne shows no interest in Zevran as a person, or what drives him, he responds by hiding and showing only his surface self.

In contrast, when you as the Warden actually manage to start reaching him, it’s by actually trying to get to know him as a person, and listening to what he says. Whatever else he may claim, Zevran is a deeply sentimental person, and that’s shown both in how he opens up, and in the gifts you give him. He talks about his mother, and that one of his clear memories of her were her gloves, designed in the Dalish fashion. When you find a pair of gloves, he’s surprised. The pair you give him aren’t fancy, they’re somewhat worn, and at first, he is kind of dismayed. Until he recognizes them as being Dalish gloves. And if you mention his mother as being part of why you got them for him, he’s shocked. Shocked that you remembered, and shocked that you cared. And he keeps those gloves, immediately putting them on. And another time, when he mentions missing the smell of Antivan leather, you can give him a pair of Antivan leather boots. Both of these show Zevran that you’re listening and paying attention to him in a positive manner, and that you’re thinking about things that he would like and want in gifts.

While he hides behind a veneer of being self-serving, flirtatious, and uncaring, Zevran shows himself to be a deeply compassionate person. But he’s also a distrustful person. You have to slowly work to win Zevran’s trust, by demonstrating genuine interest and care in him, continually. And you can’t just pester him about “reforming” or feeling guilty, or what Wynne talks about. If you listen to him, you know that he feels very guilty about multiple things that he’s done, to the point where he had intended going after you to be a form of suicide. Wynne doesn’t bother to listen to him, merely focusing on her own perceptions of him and the situation, which speaks to a broader part of her personality. And that’s why Wynne never reaches Zevran, while you can. - Mod Alistair
