Is it ever explained why Circle mages only ever seem to wear robes?

Meanwhile, non-Circle mages wear pretty much whatever by default – Morrigan has a skirt-over-pants look, Anders and Solas wear what look to be a long jackets and pants, Velanna wears a revealing dress that's pretty clearly not a traditional mage robe, Merrill wears a body suit, mage Grey Wardens have pants as part of their uniform, and mage!Hawke's starting outfit, the color-swapped version they wear at the beginning of Act 1, and their Champion armor all clearly have pants. Pants are generally a recurring theme here!

My personal theory so far is it's a control thing. The Chantry and/or Circle makes mages wear them. It's a small thing in and of itself, but when mages are already doing one thing without question, it's easier to get them to do other things without question.

Or maybe it's more akin to a uniform, and I'm overthinking it. I may be overthinking it. Even mages from more liberal Circles wear them. Habit? Too expensive to get new outfits? Both? Or even the more liberal Circles impose robes? Who knows?

I would most definitely blame the Chantry and their ways. If you look at the attire the priests and priestesses wear are very similar. Even the Templars armor include a type of robe. Might as well be an indicator that they are bond by the belief and will of the Maker.

I will also lean towards the banter Anders has in Awakening for why they continue to wear robes:
