#Q U E E N#marvel#movies#shang chi and the legend of the ten rings#meng'er zhang#tony leung#xu xialing#xu wenwu#ngl … as much as i adore this film i have to admit that it does have its flaws#and they primarily lay with its depiction of women#i mean don’t get me wrong#all these women are amazing but … they’re too perfect and underdeveloped#they each lack the complexity and character development that both shangqi and wenwu have#for example: xialing has no real storyline of her own#almost every scene with her revolves around her brother and whether or not she should forgive him#like yes i understand that shangqi is the ‘hero’ of this particular film#but her world still doesn’t have to revolve around him#in fact i have issues with the way all the female characters here seem to be so under developed#katy is basically just shangqi’s emotional support funny sidekick#who apparently is completely willing to drop everything in her life and follow him while he goes on this hero journey#she is basically just a self insert character imo because all the events in the film would have happened with or without her there#and don’t even get me started on ying li — the movie never bothers to tell us WHY she fell in love with wenwu#yes tony leung is a fine mf but that isn’t enough to make an audience believe why a woman would give up so much for a man#my theory is that ying li had a dark side that she always felt needed to be kept hidden#i’m also assuming that he showed her his softer side and told her that he would change for her#altho it would have been better if wenwu had chosen to give up his evil ways because he realizes his past actions were wrong#not because he wanted this beautiful badass woman to be with him#but anyway … maybe she felt that they both could only be themselves together? it’s hard to know for sure because the movie never tells us#imagine an au where ying li dies not from her husband’s mistakes but rather because of her own mistakes#and where she leaves her home behind not because they didn’t accept wenwu but because they didn’t accept the real her

#this scene was AMAZING#he fell in love with the woman who kicked his ass 🥰😍#if evil why sexy#shang chi and the legend of the ten rings#marvel#movies#wenwu x ying li#otp#tony leung#fala chen#xu wenwu#ying li#ngl … as much as i adore this film i have to admit that it does have its flaws#for example: the film never bothers to explain WHY she fell in love with him#what was it about him that made her believe that despite all the awful things he’d done for centuries#he was still deserving of a chance at true love#cuz it’s very obvious why he fell in love with her but there’s really no explanation on her end#like yes ok tony leung is hot and dreamy but the character wenwu never really displays any redeeming qualities that would explain#why such a morally pure character would not only fall in love with him#but why would she give up her powers and leave her family behind for him#my personal theory is that ying li had a darkside of her own that she always had to keep hidden until she met him#and maybe the real reason why she left her home behind is not because they didn’t accept wenwu#but rather because they didn’t accept the real her#imagine an au where ying li is a complex character who dies not because of her husband’s mistakes but because of her own mistakes#now THAT would have been a truly amazing story#i dream of the day when female characters are allowed to be as flawed and complicated as the men around them
