I used to do cross country in high school, and there was this guy on the team that was wonderful. Great guy. But his advice to everyone that asked how to get good was to run 20k a day.
If you don't run, I'll just tell you, most people's bodies cannot take that kind of abuse. No matter how much you train, you will not be able to run 20k a day. It's like how you can't train to make your cuts heal faster. You recover as fast as you recover. So while a big part of what made this guy so succesful was the dedication and mental toughness needed to actually run 20k a day, an equally big part was that he healed like fucking Wolverine. And that's fine, but it would've been nice if he knew that and stopped telling new guys to commit suicide by jogging.
Different guy on the team ran like, 5-6k a day, which actually isn't all that much. His problem when he gave advice was that he didn't really get that 5-6k a day doesn't generally produce elite results for most people. He was lucky in the sense that he didn't have to work all that hard to get great results, and unlucky in the sense that if he pushed himself much further than that, he fell apart.
I think about those two whenever I get advice from succesful people. The very things that make them outliers also make their advice useless to most people. Worse, they're often outliers on totally separate ends of the same spectrum, so their advice will be contradictory.
Y'all should Google the article, it’s actually pretty neat. Basically, the Aldabra Atoll was once inhabited by the Aldabra Rail, a flightless species of bird that had diverged from the flying White-Throated Rail when a section of the population landed there and found they had no natural predators. However, the Atoll occasionally gets completely submerged, and all of the flightless Aldabra rails were wiped out. But then, after the Atoll re-emerged, a bunch of the EXACT SAME species of flying White Throated Rail decided to settle there again, and immediately proceeded to evolve into flightless birds AGAIN.
did you guys know YuGiOh Abridged is still going. littlekuriboh made a new one like a month ago. its in the same aspect ratio, still like 15 minutes, and the 2007-ass voices are still very much there. there's a character whose bit is that she's a streamer who uses zoomer lingo and the rest of the cast is like "what the FUCK is she talking about."
and i wanna be clear here, i am not mocking this. i am so happy he's still going. in a post-death of Flash world it is so incredible that this little germ from the internet i grew up with is still coming out with new content. this is like when they found a valley full of takahē for me.
if you're like 19 and have no idea what i'm talking about you should watch the first episode of Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series, but like, treat it like a historical document. You have to walk into this with the understanding that 2009 was a very different time and that the entire internet was relatively niche and had a very weird culture. You are PROBABLY not going to like it is what I mean. But if you know a bunch of nerds who are currently in their mid-late 20s and you do a YGO:TAS Tristen voice there's like a 20% chance one of them will be DELIGHTED
passing this bit on to the next generation so they too can have “even chad from accounting?” pop into their heads at inappropriate times for the next decade plus
I still find myself mentally quoting this bit when I have to climb a tall staircase so I'm just adding it here
AHHHH!!! EXPLODIA!!!!
This one gets me every single time.
Here's the result of my Armageddon fuckery.
This was heavily compressed and resized down to 48x20 or something, then resized back up to 1080p and had the subtitles burnt in. The subtitles are from a different movie (1996's Space Truckers) and are in both 1. Danish and, 2. Comic Sans.
The audio was downmixed to mono, resampled to 2000hz, pitch-shifted down a couple octives, then pitch shifted back up, then had aggressive dynamics normalization applied. Backwards, so the louds became louder.
My roomate had asked me for the film Armageddon a week or two ago and I Legally Acquired it for my media server, but I had to do some re-encoding to get it to work on their Apple TV device.
I'd given them two copies (Armageddon and Armageddon-small) at roughly bluray and DVD quality, so if the bluray didn't work they could try the DVD one.
after this, she asked for three more versions, each with worse and worse quality.
The first of the 3 new ones was at VideoCD/VHS quality, the second was at Feature Phone quality, and this is the last one. The worst of all three.
BTW I forgot to mention: There's an easter egg in it, but I won't reveal what it is until she's watched it, as I know my roommate has spies from her polycule keeping tabs on my posts.
you can't just switch off years of unhealthy behaviors, negative thought patterns, and counterproductive emotions. but u can recognize them and be like 'i'm not engaging. this isn't the end of the world. i'm box breathing. i'm not giving those thoughts attention; i'm acknowledging them and letting them go. i'm going to take a break when i can.' don't be hard on yourself if it doesn't work or you do something that feels like you've set yourself back. that doesn't help, either, lol
I’m not wet, I’m just covered in water!
As an egg, I once prayed to god to make me a girl. Just for a day, “to know what it was like.” I try to be compassionate towards myself for all those little egg things— poor girl was going through it. But it’s hard not to get frustrated with myself sometimes regardless for all the obvious, unheeded signs.

Ok so this is cool but I always wondered how they knew the shadows were different at the same instant. I mean it is not like they had phones. How did they sync up that instant. I feel like that would be interesting to know but no one ever says.
^^^Does anybody know this one? How, that far apart, the time at which the shadows were observed was synced up? I am genuinely curious, not a goddamn moron asking a gotcha question. High/Low tide? (I live in the middle of the country I do not know for the precise habits of tidal activity.) The appearance of a star (or planet) in the sky? Something as utterly mundane as sunrise?
Well, first of all, it wasn’t actually pillars! Eratosthenes was told about a well in Syene that, in the summer solstice every year (June 21st) would be illuminated at the bottom entirely and without any cast shadows. This indicated that the sun was directly overhead. Going off that well known curiosity and an intelligent hunch, our dude Eratosthenes waited until high noon of the summer solstice to measure the angle of a shadow cast by a stick in Alexandria. (Sidenote: Eratosthenes was a librarian of the infamous Library of Alexandria.)
His next course of action was to hire bematists, surveyors of the time whose professional specialty was to measure distance by walking with equal length steps. They measured a distance between Alexandria and Syene of about 5000 stadia. (Guess where the word stadium comes from.) Once he had that measurement, Eratosthenes did his math-y thing, and there you have it.
ANSWER EVEN COOLER THAN I HOPED!!
Eratosthenes’ work was thorough enough that by the time he finished revising his calculations, he ended up only 66 km off of the actual polar circumference of the Earth, or an error margin of 0.16%. [wiki]
