Tales from a Not So Bratty Little Sister

I know, I know. I admitted in my last post that I have too aged out of the series to enjoy it. But I still keep coming back because I have to know how it ends. . .

I have a feeling it might be coming soon, but Russell is certainly stretching it out.

Russell said in an interview that she always wanted to do a book in the series from Brianna’s POV and as this is the fifteenth (!!!) anniversary, it was time to do it.

Like I said numerous times before, I think she is squeezing this as long as they can. This diary takes place over the course of one day plus the morning after as Nikki gets ready for the day before high school. Not that she ever says “high school” but she does say she’s ready to put all the middle school drama behind her so I’m taking that Russell hasn’t retconned Nikki from eight grader to seventh grader or something, thankfully.

I had this crossover idea back in 2011 where Nikki meets Greg Heffley.

I remade that art like a decade later when I was finally able to nail their art styles lol

omg in-depth review on the 1st Dork Diaries book, YIPPEE.

I would recommend you to read the original prints of the first book, since I'm not much of a fan of the new art in the Super Squee Edition. The old artstyle is so iconic and makes sense since it's the beginning of Nikki's art journey throughout the books, and is more expressive imo. Plus there are some interesting and funny bits in the old version that were cut out from the Super Squee Edition, for some reason. I'm not sure how you can get your hands on the OG edition, tho, besides libraries that still have it. Also keep in mind some really old prints of DD 1 used the r-slur (Tumblr no likey) in the part where Nikki ripped open the invitation, but some prints (like the one I got for my 9th birthday) used "idiot" instead. Plus the addition of pop culture aspects that really shows the book's age, like mentions of Tyra Banks and stuff.

I'm still glad the Super Squee Edition managed to capture the stress and challenge that Nikki faces in her new school. The first book is really strong among the rest in the series because of how much Nikki struggles and perseveres.

why does no one like dork diaries in this day and age

admittedly I still do, probably because of all the things I can do with it. mythological space opera thing going on lmao, me raving about the fairytale April Fools book, me cooking up a movie adaptation inside my head, etc.

Also I think the earlier books are pretty cool, a lonely kid working hard to survive in a middle school environment (a private school she's only able to attend via being the daughter of a bug exterminator) against the odds, and learning she does have the support of friends who give her the chance.
