I am late to the BG3 fics but I just found your AO3 and binged Broken Chosen and have now read HMLAK twice...it's soooo good! Love the power dynamic between them and also that Halia has maintained some of her humanity/personality. Very cool for the OC to be stronger than Cazador and to see how thirsty Astarion is for her power! I wonder about her ability to keep secrets from Bhaal...is it like Astarion looking for loopholes in Cazador's compulsion? Thank you for blessing us with your writing!

i hope to come back to HMLAK and explore how she is able to evade most of Bhaals notice, but to me, it's mostly Bhaal not caring about her every movement, and essentially only checking in when it serves him or she's gone completely off course (and Halia knowing those limits after years and years of servitude.) realistically, Bhaal can't possibly be living inside Durge's head at all moments of everyday - he's got a whole lot going on (or so he wants the world to think.) and i think that, although he can compel her like Cazador can his spawn, he only relies on that when she's deviating too far from his plan or to make a statement. a combination of which i show in HMLAK when he strikes her with the feral urge to kill in his name.
basically, Halia is young, but Bhaal made her smart for a reason. i just don't think he calculated how those smarts might result in her having her own way of doing things at every turn.
and thank YOU for your comment, it was really lovely to read and got me thinking about this fic again in a way i haven't in a while. :)

Yeah going by known vampire biology ( source: my ass) I think the blood would help it metabolise more effectively , although blood from someone whos drunk a lot of alcohol would be the most effective way to get him shitfaced because somone else already did the hard work of getting it into the bloodstream . Somthing somthing blood being easier to digest than alcohol which is food adjacent something something.

i really put HMLAK down at the worst possible chapter to easily pick the fic back up and jump back into writing, i really love that for myself
I’ve gotten a few comments asking where I’ve been (on HMLAK) and just want to clarify that I got hit with a very real burnout after writing something like 250k words in six months, which is something I’ve never come even remotely close to doing
I’m gonna try and go back to it this week and see where I land, but sorry to anyone that’s been waiting. Between burnout, life, and fandom drama, I just had no words left. But I hope to find some more and share them with you guys soon ❤️🩹

“I thought the blood would distract you, yeah.”
“Wretched woman,” he breathes, shaking his head. Are his pupils always this wide in the dark or is it the blood? She’s not sure.
“Oh, so you didn’t enjoy it? Then why are you here?”
“I wanted to make sure you were okay.”
“Liar,” she snorts, smiling. Halia takes a step closer as she speaks, watching the way his gaze traces every movement. His mouth is still curved in an almost smile as he appraises her, so she can’t help but break his line of thought by saying, “You’re so adorable when you’re thinking of what to say.”
