Women writers of the Victorian era regarded the fairy tale as a dormant literature of their own. When Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre hears hoofbeats approaching her in the dark, ice-covered Hay Lane, "memories of nursery stories" immediately flood her mind, especially the recollection of "a North-of-England" monster capable of assuming several bestial forms. But the beastly apparition Jane expects turns out to be Rochester, the "master" whom she promptly causes to fall off his horse and who will eventually become her thrall. Rochester himself soon shows his own conversance with, and respect for, powers he associates with the magical women of traditional fairy tales. "When you came on me in Hay Lane last night," he tells Jane, "I thought unaccountably of fairy tales, and had half a mind to demand whether you had bewitched my horse. I am not sure yet. Who are your parents?" When Jane replies that she is parentless, Rochester endows her with a supernatural ancestry. Surely, he insists, she must have been "waiting for [her] people," the fairies who hold their revels in the moonlight: "Did I break one of your rings, that you spread the damned ice on the causeway?"

Here and elsewhere in Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë takes even more seriously than her two characters do the potency of the female fairy-tale tradition to which she has them refer. Karen E. Rowe, who has so ably written on that tradition, was the first to show how fully saturated Jane Eyre is with patterns drawn from major folktales such as "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," "Blue Beard," and, as a prime analogue for Jane's developing relationship with the homely Rochester, from "Beauty and the Beast," the 1756 Kunstmärchen (or literary fairy tale) adapted and popularized by Madame Le Prince de Beaumont.

Okay so we know Kaiba has his school uniform, his Duelist Kingdom outfit, his iconic Battle City outfit, his business casual outfit and his rare business suit. But you know what I need to see more of?

This Friggen thing!!!

I want more of THIS! This underrated gem of a ensemble! It’s different, fashionable, oddly business appropriate and sophisticated! Still incorporates the trench coat aesthetic but more practical and less… sharp edges? Do you get what I’m saying? Also, there is a little matching outfit for Mokuba! Like come on, Kai-bros matching outfits?!?! 🥺😍🥺

Listen, I’m a simple person, but this? This… I need more of this in my life. More fanart appreciation of this majestic outfit. Just 💥💳💥💳💥💳💥 Right now.

Totally agree!!!

His Yugioh R outfit is one of my faves tbh.

Seto almost matches Uryu in the Quincy archer outfit! Hence my idea for Royal Lights! They slay together between daggers & arrows...none can defeat them!

His Guardian Dragon

Seto does have a nickname, the Dragon of Domino. Why? He has 3 of the 4 rarest cards in the world save for the God cards & they are well taken care of. There are some days that he’ll look out the window of his office, or walk down a quiet street & he’ll catch a cloud in the form of his favorite dragon. It’s rare, but he does love catching the sight of it & it draws his full attention. His senses are suddenly calmed, his mind goes blank as he falls into a trance. His normally frightening energy is suddenly quieted & his cold glare falls into a lost look of love. On the days he sees such a thing, his dreams are filled of the dragon flying him & Mokuba away from their hellish past. It’s on those nights that he sleeps peacefully & wakes in a happier mood than usual.

The Pacific Trust sent representatives to Disney with authentic textile samples that would have been present in ancient Polynesia. Two major materials, tapa and pandanus, are the basis for most costumes in the film.

“Because the materials are natural, they tend to be more structured than a fabric. How they move on people, and how they move when wet is different and it’s important to get those things right. For Moana’s costume I knew she was an adventurer, a voyager, and the costume had to reflect that. I added a slit to the front of her skirt, which ended up working technically as well. We work very closely to the animation department and the simulation team. Whatever outfit she wears needs to be historically correct, it needs to have materials that are accurate to the history, and it has to allow movement.”

Different

“You’re…different. I’ve never met a girl like you.”

She stares at him, hands stilling over her sword. “What?”

“All the girls in my village are so boring,” he says. “So focused on finding husbands that they don’t bother learning about the world.”

“Girls in your village aren’t allowed to own property or vote,” she says, somewhat incredulous.

He winces at her tone. Need she be so harsh? “Well…it’s not like they’ve ever needed to, we’re a very progressive village and I always vote in favor of their needs. You’re not like that though, you fight for your rights yourself.”

“They are fighting for their rights,” she says. She sets down her sharpening stone, a frown stretching across her face. “No voting, no property, no wages of their own to purchase necessities. Besides finding a kind husband, what else do you think they can do to find a good future?”

“Th-they could leave,” he says. He did not expect the conversation to go this way. He expected her to blush like she had when he complimented her sword skills. He finds himself oddly defensive. “The men in my village aren’t slavers. The girls can leave any time.”

She snorts. “On foot? Your village is a hard, three day ride from the nearest city and that’s by horseback. And, even if they made it, what skills do they have? What references? The risk is too high for any woman to leave, that’s as good as trapping them. The fact that it takes me holding a sword for your opinion of women to change just shows how small-minded you are.”

He bristles, unable to refute her. “Look, I was just trying to pay you a compliment! There’s no need to attack me.”

“Trust me,” she says, standing when he moves to loom over her. They’re of near equal height and, if he was trying to intimidate her, he fails. “You’ll know it when I’m attacking you. This isn’t it.”

He doesn’t seem to hear her, flustered to be seeing her eye-to-eye. “Furthermore, I think I’d know what sort of girls I grew up with! They’re timid and lack a desire to explore the world.”

“The world you created for them doesn’t take long to explore,” she says. Her sword is bare in her hand. “Marry or descend into poverty. Bear an heir or be cast into poverty. Behave or be thrown into poverty. I was there for a week and figured it out. But,” she continues, looking him up and down, “maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to judge. After all, you’ve lived there your whole life and you still haven’t figured it out.”

He splutters. “That’s not–there are other options–”

“When the revolution is done,” she says, coldly, “and your people are forced to give women rights, see how many stay and how many leave. See how many suddenly discover their wander-lust. See how many end up like me.”

She leaves him there and stalks off to the edge of camp. She leaves him there with his mouth opening and closing, and heart pounding in his chest.

She leaves him there with the unsettling realization that he doesn’t want the women in his village to end up being like her, so different and strong. Because, if they did, where would he be? Where would his home be?

It’s an upsetting realization to have, mid-revolution. No chance to back out now.

Wow, this has such a strong voice to it! And to convey so much background context in so few words!!! :0

I knew from the first sentence that this would be amazing, and it delivered. It’s a take I’ve always seen hinted, but never fleshed out and I ADORE seeing it fleshed out.

Omfg. One of the most empowering and creative scenes I have read. What the actual hell. 😧💛💛 whoever wrote this please make a novel so I can re read it over and over again.
