Not to tell anyone in a horror story what to do, but:
Forests are normally loud.
They're full of life. There's endless animals that live there. They make noises. Lots of them.
If you ever are in a forest and it's quiet, that's not right. That means something is very wrong. You should probably either be similarly quiet until you can figure out what's going on, or you should get out of there very quickly.

Having the privilege of growing up in a rural area (until industrialism began to encroach on My Forest a few years ago 😒) plus the stories my mom tells about when she lived in the jungles of Panamá (🇵🇦), I've always including the woods being loud and going silent when something is very wrong.
The howls of coyotes and the screaming of insects are not the scary thing.
It's the silence you should be afraid of.
Yess 1000% if it's silent there is a reason and it's usually a dangerous reason..
