Peggy Carter takes up space
so roseapprentice and I have been musing about the way, in Agent Carter, the size of Peggy’s body is not minimized, in contrast to how she’s made to appear in Captain America. It’s one of the really great things about the series, and we’ve spent quite a bit of time discussing how and why they make her appear so different between the two.
One aspect is the way they dress her - in Captain America, she spends a lot of time in uniform, which is a tightly-fitted, dark-colored and monotone garment. We noted that when she has a choice of clothes in the movie, she opts for a bright color, but it’s still all one color and tightly fitted, a red evening dress, and the red dress is sort of coded as “object of male desire,” which is symbolism that minimizes her role as a character.
In the show we get to see what she wears on an ordinary day, when she isn’t required to wear a uniform and isn’t feeling like flirting with any of the men around her. It’s colorful, it’s often blocky and contrasting - white blouse with dark skirt, huge collar with dark blazer, broad structured shoulders and red hat. And even when she is in evening wear, it’s a lighter color with more structural details. It also shines. In a scene where she’s a hero, rather than a love interest, that makes perfect sense.
There’s also the power of her choreography in the show, especially in fight scenes. She’s intimidating because she radiates anger and violence. Her experiences in the war changed her, and Hayley Atwell acts bigger and harder because of it - very successfully, I might add.
But as I watched the show today, I realized how much of it is the camera work. She gets the bulk of the hero shots. She is the focus, and she often fills up the screen. She’s often shot from a slightly low angle, to loom over the viewers. To put it bluntly, she’s shot like a man would be. Like Captain America was in the movie. Larger than life.
That may be one of the most unique things about this show, and it’s definitely one of the things I love most.

That last line is so fucking critical and can be applied to SO MANY THINGS. It’s the same reason I get angry when some dudes start screaming #NOTALLMEN. Right, not ALL men but let’s just acknowledge that it’s a fucking problem and all agree to collectively work toward a solution.

This is equally applicable in terms of PoC representation in those genres.
There are indeed very few women in high fantasy series like LotR (though I will note that apparently Rothfuss forgot about Eowyn, a very strong female character appearing throughout the main series). This post should serve as inspiration for up and coming fantasy writers to fill this niche, to create literature that inspires girls and young women to be heroic just as boys and young men have been inspired for generations.

I’ve said this before and I’ll point it out again -
Menstruation is caused by change in hormonal levels to stop the creation of a uterine lining and encourage the body to flush the lining out. The body does this by lowering estrogen levels and raising testosterone.
Or, to put it more plainly “That time of the month” is when female hormones most closely resemble male hormones. So if (cis) women aren’t suited to office at “That time of the month” then (cis) men are NEVER suited to office.
If you are a dude and don’t dig the ladies around you at their time of the month, just think! That is you all of the time.
And, on a final note, post-menopausal (cis) women are the most hormonally stable of all human demographics. They have fewer hormonal fluctuations of anyone, meaning older women like Hilary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren would theoretically be among the least likely candidates to make an irrational decision due to hormonal fluctuations, and if we were basing our leadership decisions on hormone levels, then only women over fifty should ever be allowed to hold office.

Tina Belcher’s sexual desires are weird. They’re weird and more than a little off-putting and not meant to be particularly palatable for the average straight male viewer. And it is glorious to watch. The show makes you recognize her desires as a young woman and the possibly that other girls feel the same way. Tina’s budding sexuality might be an exaggerated view of how a lot of teenage girls feel as they grow up, but there are girls out there that relate to Tina and it’s a point of view that rarely gets told. And when it is, it’s almost always bent to fit how men want girls to express their sexuality. But Tina’s sexual desires aren’t there to titillate the audience. They’re there because they’re a part of her.
Tina Belcher is important.
