I just learned this fact and I can't help but share it with you!!!

In 13th-century European castles, separate fortresses were rarely built. Instead, one of the towers was significantly larger than the others and served as sleeping quarters for the lord or the king and his family.

Medieval life was full of changes and conflicts. Periods of peace were often interrupted by wars and sieges. To protect the ruler and his family, spiral staircases were built in the towers, winding clockwise. This design made it harder for attackers, as defenders could strike while using the wall as a shield, whereas attackers, especially right-handed ones, faced difficulties.

Additionally, the steps were uneven in height and length, making it easier for defenders, familiar with the layout, to move quickly. Attackers, in heavy armor and unfamiliar with the stairs, risked losing balance. This design significantly complicated sieges, particularly when climbing upward, giving defenders an advantage.

Thus, clockwise spiral staircases were not only convenient but also a crucial part of defensive strategy.

I think an easy way to sum up american domestic architecture is that if you are remodeling and older bathroom you have to watch for razor blades in the walls

What could possibly be more american than creating a disposable version of a product (safety razor vs straight razor), determining that the waste generated was both dangerous (sharp!) and compact (flat!), and that the best solution was to just.. put a hole to stuff them in the walls and make it the next generation’s problem

A MAGICAL PORTAL
TO THE LAND OF KNIVES

@thefallingdream i have dealt with this so many times it’s stupid

The random photos i found though don’t do justice to what it actually looks like when encountered in the wild

Those are fucking clean looking blades. I always find masses of rusty blades with hair and general detritus.

Like having a damp rotting sharps container in the wall that you can’t empty

#a couple years back there were news stories about renovations to an old commercial building where they opened a wall #and it was full of HUMAN TEETH

#there used to be a dentist's office in the building and it seems the dentist was using this same disposal 'solution' with pulled teeth

#and apparently this was at least the third WALL FULL OF TEETH discovered in the state of georgia #just all sorts of creepiness being shoved into the walls in the early to mid 20th century i guess

Tagging y’all in this one actually, what the fuck?? Holy shit. @enderjester @lapin-noire I live here and I never knew any of this was going on.

These are the chapter house stairs in Wells Cathedral. Someday I’d love to do a supercut of every time these show up on screen. Apparently a lot of filmmakers think they’re perfect for their hero to race up or down while escaping the castle, or to have a swordfight on. They’ve appeared in every other Robin Hood movie or TV series, and anything else where they want a medieval castle feel and some derring-do.

I first noticed them in 1984, when Robin of Sherwood ran up them, took a sharp right through a doorway, and met Maid Marion for the first time. I saw them most recently in Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves - and sat up and went “Aww!”, because they might be 700 years old, but they’re also old friends by this point.

Also noting, from visible wear, that “Walk On The Left, Stand On The Right“ etiquette predates escalators by quite a bit…

Oh I had SUCH a dad-tier moment watching that movie too! because for a NANOSECOND they were in a place with an arch flanked by circles and mirrored by an upside down arch

And I had to leap across the couch like

A) a New York dad who CANNOT stop themselves from saying FLATIRON BUILDING

B) a London dad who suddenly announces with a strange, deep grievance in the middle of a chase scene that THOSE STREETS DONT CONNECT TO EACH OTHER,

I hooted with it. THATS IN SOMERSET. Wells cathedral SPOTTED. GET WRECKED. IVE BEEN THERE.

I can see why dads do it. Exhilarating
