Writing the "H" in "HRPF"

The H in HRPF is probably the biggest hurdle when it comes to joining the HRPF community and especially when writing HRPF. I've found that you can learn most of the hockey basics from simply reading fanfic but here's some good resources that I use regularly:

This Wikipedia article is phenomenal for nicknames of players, teams and arenas. It definitely doesn't cover every single player's nicknames but it's pretty extensive, especially for more popular players. In addition, I've found the arena nicknames super helpful because they tend to be hard to find.
I've found that the best way to learn hockey terminology and how hockey is talked about (especially in the NHL) is reading articles from publications such as The Athletic. Their articles are packed with terminologies and detail.
While watching games certainly helps, I understand not wanting to just watch full games, especially if you don't know what's going on. I've found that clip compilation channels like Delta Highlights, Alyssa Hope and Jens95 all provide interesting and fast paced videos that get you familiar with teams, famous players and mechanics of the game.
When in doubt the NHL's player profiles provide pretty simple information like height, team history, position and statistics.

Don't sweat writing the game, at the end of the day it's all about getting pucks in the nets.

Connor smiles wanly. He’s dressed comfortably, occasionally patting Leon laying on his lap. He seems less upset now that the dressing room has emptied out, leaving a handful of players and one or two videographers minding their own business. It’s as if reality blinked - one moment, there’s a cat on McDavid’s lap, and the next, a fully naked Draisaitl is toppling onto the floor, taking McDavid with him in a shout of panic.

What if Fruits Basket, but NHL? Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl takes one bad backcheck during a game and suddenly transforms into a cat. It turns out an old generational boon has resurfaced, meaning Draisaitl will turn into a cat whenever he's at risk of injury as a means of protection.

This, of course, is problematic as a professional hockey player, when half of your job involves putting your body on the line. Now Draisaitl, McDavid, and the rest of the Oilers organisation struggle with nosy press, defensive turnovers, and sponsorship obligations as they try to maintain Draisaitl's secret while staying in the race for the Cup.

My Teammate was Hit With a Generational Curse and Now Turns into a Cat?! was a joke that has gone entirely too far and now features roughly eight thousand words, three supplementary comic pages, and likely more in the coming months. Updates to this project will likely be on this tumblr.

All for the leon/matthew pairing (very interesting seeing your prespective of them) and I know to you don't go here but what are your thoughts on leon/connor? as an oiler fan, this season in particular they have been close (so many gifs/pics/comments, they are ridiculous) and the idea of a very good looking guy wanting an average looking extra boring guy (and not just for his talent, just for him) makes me feel a bit feral tbh

ah, well. obligatory preface that i very much don’t go here and i’m pretty hesitant to say anything about any oiler (draisaitl is… pretty much the only exception bc i’m german and do naturally keep up with and root for the few german NHLers, even though the oilers very much aren’t my team). i’m first of all a hockey fan, then a pens fan, then a fan of some other teams that i secondarily root for (including but not limited to the avs). which is to say that i just love the sport in general a lot, and do follow a lot of Narratives™ for narratives’ sake.

(full disclosure: i have, actually, written a fic from connor mcdavid’s pov. i’m not gonna get into it, but i did not have a great experience with posting it and almost deleted it shortly after posting, even though this is not something i ever do. this is part of the reason why i stay away from the oilers.)

all that said, since you asked:

honestly? connor mcdavid is not a boring looking man. i don’t really get this narrative because he’s objectively— like yeah, not my type, really— but a good-looking dude. and i get the narrative draw of it; of course i do, most people’s consensus seems to be that mcdrai is basically next generation sidgeno. canadian phenom captain coming into a storied franchise? check. european ride-or-die alternate who’s the best player on his team some nights, even though his captain is the best player in the league and of an entire generation? check. king and lionheart dynamic (leonheart even, lol)? check. fics containing a lot of hockey robot trope? check. dude the entire situation is essentially: if i had a dime for every time etc etc i’d have twenty cents, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

so i get the hypothetical draw. and hey, good for oilers fans! genuinely, it’s a gift to be given a great dynamic between your star players for a lot of reasons. but i’m also someone who, as a fic writer, dies on the hill of characterisation. I care about the individual characters (fictionalised as they may be, within rpf fandom) and what they’re like. and that, my friend, is where mcdrai and sidgeno couldn’t be more different.
