Edited for all my writer friends out there
"Stop saying 15 year olds with weird interests are cringe, they're 15" this is true however you should also stop saying adults with weird interests are cringe because who gives a shit
To wit:
I want to share some wisdom from my high school art teacher.
In my AP Art class, there was a girl who was just starting to experiment with mixed media. At this point she was still playing around, trying to decide what direction she wanted to go with her portfolio. So one critique day, she brought in an abstract canvas with some rhinestone highlights and painted and real peacock feathers. She loved sparkles and peacock feathers so she thought she’d try introducing them a *little*. And after everyone had given some input, the teacher gave her his advice, VERY roughly paraphrased here:
“So here’s the thing… I do not like this style. These are just elements that do not speak to me personally, but I see that you like them, and you’re doing interesting things with them.
“My biggest critique is, I only merely *dislike* this piece. I want you to make me HATE it. Go crazy with the things that you like. Don’t hold back trying to make it palatable to people like me. Because I am NEVER going to like it. And if the audience does not like it, it should drive them crazy seeing how much YOU love it.”
Her portfolio was chock full of neon colors and glitter and rhinestones and splashes of peacock feathers and it was a delight. Our teacher despised every piece lol, but she got great marks and I think even won some awards. And more importantly, she was happy and proud of the results. Because she didn’t limit herself by trying to appeal to people who were never going to enjoy what she enjoyed.
Takeaway here: be as cringe as you want. Don’t limit yourself based on other ppl’s tastes. They’re not you, and you are incredible 💕
hey guys so apparently this is a thing a lot of people don't realise but like. if you have had writer's block/ art block for like. six months. a year. two years. that's maybe not a block. that's maybe depression. and you should maybe look into treating the source of the problem instead of just beating yourself up for not being able to write/draw. be kind to yourself and know that your struggle to create isn't based in laziness or a lack of skill or talent.
WHY YOU SHOULD WRITE HORRIBLY:
1. You’ll never write anything if you don’t
Addition: Every single piece of art or writing you’ve made to date was necessary for you to make your best pieces to date. Every last scrap. Everything from the dumb doodles to the careful studies to the spicy fun was required to get from point A to point C. Everything you do is point B. So draw horribly. It’s fantastic and guilt free.
art tips
- don't call what you create "content". regardless of what it is. that's the devil talking. call it art, call it writing, call it music, call it analysis, call it editing, literally just call it what it is
- I was going to put other things but oh my god please just don't call yourself a "content creator". you are a person you are making art / writing / music / etc you are an artist an author a musician
- you are not an Image Generator For Clicks And Views. please. allow yourself to connect with your work by naming it properly and acknowledging yourself in kind

There are so many ways to make moodboards, bookcovers, and icons without plagiarizing! As artists, authors, and other creatives, we need to be especially careful not to use someone else’s work and pass it off as our own.
Please add on if you know any more resources for free images <3
the most life-changing customer i’ve ever had at work was a guy who came up to me and my coworker when we were at cash and said ‘hey kids…. wanna see something?’
and I said sure because why the fuck not, i’m here for a good time not a long time, and this motherfucker pulled a railroad spike out of his pocket.
A GODDAMN
ANTIQUE
RAILROAD
SPIKE
It was a fucking foot long chunk of steel that weighed about five pounds on its own so i was like ‘huh….. neat’
and he said ‘wait. there’s more’ and he took out a screwdriver. inlaid into the head of the spike. ‘things aren’t always as they appear’ he said as he unscrewed the bit and pulled out of this goddamn railroad spike
a statue
a tiny, tiny golden statue stood on the base of this flathead screw. it was a tiny golden man standing next to a tiny golden flower with gemstones in the petals. the whole thing was smaller than my thumbnail is tall. it was detailed enough that the tiny man had facial features. it was amazing.
‘oh my god,’ i said. ‘how long did it take you to make that?’
‘here’s a word of advice,’ he said, ‘never answer that question when people ask it. it devalues your work. you’ll get faster and better at things, and be able to make more art in less time. they don’t need to know about the process, just the product’.
and he left and that’s the one artistic piece of advice i definitely wanna hold to.
don’t tell people how long it takes to make shit.
Repeat after me:
- Good rest is required for creativity
- I am allowed to rest in order to restore and rejuvenate my creative well
- I am not lazy for resting
- My WIP will benefit from the rest I give myself and my creativity
- My writing requires rest just as much as I do in order to flourish
Every time I return to Tumblr, this flowchart has more likes.
Sometimes it turns up on Facebook, or friends alert me that some dick has put it on merch or uploaded it somewhere without credit…
People have written entire blogs about it…
It’s just something I made at like 11pm at night one time in a very “RRGH!” mood and shoved up on Tumblr and went to bed.
Sometimes it’s fun to read though what the latest comments are. Some people get it or feel encouraged, and some people are SO angry at me for encouraging people to keep trying, like how DARE people make art while not being already great at making art or feeling confident!? Absolutely hilarious. Cry harder!
Just remember two things:
1. This flow chart was made by a professional illustrator called Kate Holden, inexplicably the same person who voices Kanaya in Let’s Read Homestuck, because hey, it’s Tumblr, of course I’m a Homestuck.
2. You ARE an Artist. Make more art. 🧡
fucked up how colors look different depending on what screen you’re looking at them on. that should be illegal I think
this fucking shit, you know
I spend so much time carefully picking and adjusting the colors in every single drawing I make that I’d probably lose my mind if I didn’t just repeatedly push this out of my memory and pretend it’s not a thing. Why am I reblogging a blank empty post that doesn’t say anything??? Weird
good news! you can’t make sure that everyone will see the correct colors on their own device, but you can make sure your monitor is as accurate as possible for printing and sharing by calibrating it!
there are a bunch of free monitor tests, but here’s an easy one you can use. the passmark and eizo tests are also pretty good, though passmark doesn’t work in your browser. be warned that some tests may cause eye strain.
you can either use the settings built into your monitor itself or use the display color calibration settings in your operating system to adjust the settings until everything looks correct, and then enjoy your accurate colors.
REBLOG TO SAVE A LIFE
so first off lemme just say that your art has totally floored me, when i first found your blog i actually spent a good hour scrolling and clicking the next page button?? i still feel so inspired and in awe and you're seriously talented!! second, i see that you have a ridic good grasp on colors, and i need some advice on getting a better hold on them.. can you rec any god exercises/things to look out for/whatever?? thanks!!!
thank you! here are some thoughts: color is all about the emotional value (you know how they say you’re having the blues when you’re sad? that’s what I mean), natural harmony and a little of personal taste.
here are some exercises/things to look out for:
- study photos/screencaps/paintings that have good colors for you
- don’t color pick ffs (unless you wanna check if your guess was right)
- learn to be accurate and see the real colors, a good exercise: study a photo, don’t color pick, not even your own colors (i know u hate me already) and don’t blend (that’s right, figure out those subtleties too)
- I like to work in groups of 3-4 main colours* and 1 unifying colour
- the unifying color is VERY important, it makes colors coexist harmoniously and tells us about the temperature. Sometimes is not even there, just an overlay layer or a filter, but it’s our unseen hero :))))
- GREYS ARE OK?? greys and low-saturated colors are friends, they help saturated colors shine and give the eye a rest. that said use w caution, they can make everything look muddy too, so watch out 4 that.
the unifying color in action:
* remind me to talk about primary, supportive and contrasting colors another day :)))
I really love your artstyle! Could I maybe get some tips on how to give variety to faces? My style has a little same face syndrome unfortunately.
personally i found that when i used to sameface its because i was afraid of making an ‘ugly’ face but!! imo an ugly but interesting face is more fun than a good-looking but boring face. go forth
Hi! I decided to make a community for FanArtists, to support each other, make friends and maybe find even more amazing artists! What does it have to offer right now? Well not a lot, since there arent any members as of when I created this post. But feel free to join the server to watch it grow! :) It has (daily) art challenges to keep you creating, and will support many fandoms! (Youtube, Anime, Gaming, Podcasts, etc.)
Would love to see you there and help support fellow artists :DD
